Just curious, but we all ski in different places. Me if you haven't taken a hint, ski in Manitoba (It's all I got and it kinda sucks. It's the crap the east coast guys laugh at) We don't have nothing to big or too exciting here, but we do have alot of cold, and it friggen suck. An average ski day is about -15 Celsius, and the weather is usually a dick and it seems to more often than not drop down to -25 to -30. The coldest I'll ski in is about -25. I'd keep going, but beyond that, bandannas, bellaclavas or whatever just frost up and stick to your face, and my fingers start to hurt like hell. So reply to this with where you ski, average cold, and coldest you can ski in, make sure to say if your using Celsius or Fahrenheit.
Hmmm.. well i guess the coldest ive skied in is about -15 maybe! I live as far west coast of BC Canada as you can get... its not as cold as -25 but its a reaaly wet cold !
Well, I think that 10-15 degrees F is the best weather for snow production and everyday shredding. The coldest I have shredded though (here in Bozeman, Montana) is -40 F. I looked at the thermometer, and thought I have to do just one run.
Got to the bottom, had frost bite on the tip of my nose (with 2 merino face coverings). Perhaps the most painfully epic experience of my life.
This is messed up, I never thought i'd find a bunch of prairie guys on here. Never made it to either, but I should really consider spring hill if its outside of Winnipeg. Two hour driver to Russel, same with Winnipeg, so why not, trans Canada is nicer to drive on too.
Skiied -10*F a few days ... only brought pipe gloves lol, had to go in every fun runs to warm up in the lodge. Was kind of nice because there was noone there *shitty weather on a weekday*
skiing is the cold is still skiing, so it's fun, you just need to go in more often, and when you do, the hot chocolate taste better than at any other time
-35 C with wind chill on PEI. Night skiing. The whole hill was ice. I wore a thick hoodie, baselayer, Helly Hansen construction Jacket which was like 3 inches thick with a high collar, sweatpants under my snowpants, wool socks, snowmobile mitts and a wool scarf. I was relatively warm for about 2 hours.
-24F in Whistler that wasn't too bad i had a bdog suit with a hoodie and a insulated softshell and i was fine but my bandana kept freezing and that was annoying
-20 with windchill at schweitzer. considering i have no feeling in all my fingers anymore due to frostbite and i was pretty bundled up so wasn't too bad
skiing in the cold sounds almost as absurd as swimming in the wet
but for real, i'll go as long as the resort is open. they'll usually close down if it truly is too cold. if you layer up and keep moving, the super cold days can be the best because it usually means open skies (...sun) and minimal crowds. the coldest i've skied in was -40 with windchill and i still managed to break a sweat, granted that park riding with towrope access is a hell of a workout
-30 celcius at Saas Fee Glacier 2 winters ago. my gloves got frozen to my poles. Boots felt stiff as fuck. i did not like it much. -5 °c in winter is the best
Snowmobiled in -38*F wearing an open face motocross helmet and goggles ripping down lakes at 100mph creating near -80*F wind chills on the exposed areas of my face. Frostbite sucks.
holy crap i remember like 3 years ago i got to go for to tremblant for the first time (havent been able to go since) and we got up at like 8 in the morning and went for first tracks and it was so fricken cold. after every one you had to go into the lodge aha
One thing that has to be remembered here is that -30F in summit county is going to feel warmer than -30 at sea level, because the air is thinner at elevation.
I woke up one morning from the arapahoe in (across the street from keystone) walked outside and it was cold, told my dad hmm 10 degrees maybe?? got in the car and the thermometer read -15.
That said the coldest i have skied in Michigan was -8 degrees at night it was cold as hell!!!!
I skied in -50F windchill last year in Colorado. It was terrible. You could only do about 2 runs before having to go in and thaw out whatever you were using to cover your face. Everything instantly froze when you went back outside. It also sucked because it was so cold that all of our skis were sticking to the snow and you basically had to push yourself down the mountain.
