Good hunting story. I shot this elk a couple years ago (Forgot how big it was) and my whole group took pics with it. The next time i went to the hunting shop near my house i took the pic of my girlfriend with it and put it on the wall of fame (i couldnt find the pic of me). Right after i put it up a really old guy walks by and says nice rack. The he points at my girlfriends chest and not the elk. Proably one of the funniest moments of my life. I dont know if it was an accident or he was a perv.
There is a lot of duck hunting around here, but while I go shooting sometimes I've never gone hunting. I met someone who bow hunts and I thought that that was pretty cool-seems like it would add a lot of extra challenge and make it a fair hunt if you can get close enough to bring something down with a bow. Has anyone ever tried it before?
I took the deer in the picture above with a bow. Its what i live for when September-October comes around. I sometimes go during shotgun season but its a whole different ballgame then. Plus i dont really like the notion of taking a slug from another stupid hunter (there are alot of those during shotgun season).
General rule of thumb is you gotta be able to hit a small dinner plate consistantly at 20-30 yards. There are alot out there that are way better though.
So any recommendations on what kind of bow to look for if I tried to get into it? I'm pretty strong for a girl and athletic, but I'm small (like 5'6" 120lbs), and of course would want a bow that I could actually eventually use beyond target practice.
This is not a question that can be answered online. If you're serious about getting a quality bow, you will need to go to a pro-shop. Avoid the big retailers like Bass Pro Shops, Gander Mountain, or Cabelas. Do not order online. Go to a small pro-shop and get measured and fitted to a bow that is right for you. Your height does not determine what size bow is correct. Look online and find local retailers for Hoyt, Matthews, Bowtech, and PSE. These are the big brands. I shoot Hoyt myself, but honestly they are all in the same league. Expect to spent around $700 (maybe a few hundred more) for a full set up including bow, release, stabilizer, peep, and arrow rest. Arrows will be additional.
Legal and ethical are two very different things. It isn't legal to shoot a deer that was hit by a car and writhing in pain, and instead you must wait an hour for a cop to show up and kill it. However, it is ethical to dispatch the deer. I do not have as much problem knowing that you are taking hogs from the helicopter. They are an invasive and damaging species. It does not belong in this thread though, as it is not hunting. It is shooting, that is all.
I'm not going to argue with you about it, nothing personal. i live and hunt mainly in montana and wouldnt consider it hunting but everywhere you go peoples opinions are different on whats considered hunting. Texas hunting is a whole different level than the west. call it what you want but its still hunting
You eat all those ducks or what??? They taste any good??
I picked up a migratory bird stamp this year here in PA and I'm thinking about lunching a couple ducks or a goose or tow, possibly a grouse if I can hit one.
Headed up to north central PA to grouse and small game hunt in a few weeks.
Well a lot of people don't like the taste of duck because it's really gamey. But I actually love the taste haha. It's all about how you cook it. As long as you marinade it and use seasonings most people will eat it. My favorite is marinade in Italian dressing for a few hours than wrap it in bacon and cook em up on the grill.
It also depends on the species of ducks. I don't know what you guys have out east but here there are certain "shit ducks" that well, taste like shit haha.
But geese and grouse on the other hand are awesome to eat! They taste damn good.
When you go grouse hunting if you can go with someone that has a trained hunting dog it makes it so much easier. Those damn birds camouflage good and love the thick stuff that by the time they get up they're so quick they are gone almost before you can shoot.
Oh ya, and when you go duck hunting, make sure you know what birds are illegal to shoot and exactly what they look like. There are some that quite a bit like a duck from far away or in the early morning when its darker.
yea I hear that, I got some studying to do before I go out for a duck. We got a bunch of mallards here so that should be easy to spot. I have til the end of the month before it opens though so I should have time for some reading.
I mostly got the stamp to shoot a goose, never ate one before so I'd like to try it.
Split it up between the 5 of us that went. The shittier ducks are made into jerky, and the better ones we cook on the grill.
This was my last hunt of the year on Monday morning. Was absolutely amazing! Saw over 10,000 geese migrating throughout the morning, it was easily my best/most favorite hunt ever! Then to top it off we got 4 picture perfect mallards.
I shot a pretty good looking one this year too, but never really got a good pic of it. Posted some pics of our best days earlier in this thread, but fuck it, heres some more haha
if anyone hunts up in Montana go to the hunterite colony theres always some birds and its a fun experience last year we found a dear that had been completely frozen it was crazy!
