Why do people turn vegetarian?

there are lots of reasons.
for exampls:  do not want to hurt animals, are grossed out by eating animals,   religious reasons, to lose weight i guess (health cleanse)  etc

fish is not the only healthy meat, chicken and turkey have tons of protein, and if you remove the skin, very little fat. red meat is good due to it's high amount of iron. just trime off the fat before you cook it.

there are a lot of reasons. moral reasons, carbon footprint stuff, not cool with the industry etc etc. do some research and see what goes on to get all your food to your plate and you might be unhappy with it too

not everyone is cut out to be alpha predators. make sure you eat your beans and soy you weaklings. I'll keep chowing blood and fat thanks. It's nancys like vegans living past 55 that are running up the cost of healthcare anyway. Lower the life expectancy and enjoy it while your here I say.

real vegetarians that do it for they're own reasoning dont advertise they are vegetarian.

A good few of my friends who elect not to eat meat are very subtle about it. Unless you were paying attention, you wouldn't know otherwise.

People that make it well known they are veggie (or god forbid vegan) definitely seem to be doing it for attention/fad. It is somewhat tolerable until they get in other peoples' faces about eating meat.

it's not bad if you marinade it and grill it and add spices and maybe mix in a little ground sausage or beef, but I guess that kind of defeats the purpose haha.

This may seem CRAZY, but I just straight up don't enjoy the taste of most meat. I haven't enjoyed most meat since I was in elementary school. Chicken and seafood are cool with me, but most other things are blehhhhh.

This doesn't answer the question, though. I became a vegetarian initially as a naive teenager for animal rights issues/reasons, but as I grew up and educated myself on the reality of the situation, it became more of a health thing and now it's mostly due to sustainable food systems. The world is overpopulated and it is not sustainable for a society to base it's diet off of red meat. I could spend hours talking about this but newschoolers is not the place. I do currently eat seafood and organically/humanely raised chicken and deer/elk/game birds caught by myself or my friends on occasion, but I've been a vegetarian for so long and been satisfied the entire time so it's just become my lifestyle.

I've refused to eat steak since before I can even remember.... legit haven't eaten a steak since I was probably forced to at the age of 5 or something. I just don't like it.

My grandad went vegan after having a portion of his lung removed and starting chemo-therapy. It helped his recovery immensely. Four months after his surgery he was out golfing with his friends again.

My brother flew out to ireland to see him last June and he said he was looked great (Four months after surgery).

fish is the healthiest meat by far but red meat as well as white meat also has a huge benefit in your diet. I worked in a fish store and my health has improved actually noticably since eating a lot of fish on a regular basis.

I am confused how you, and others, can call themselves a vegetarian if you eat fish, turkey, deer, elk and game birds?

I meant I had been a vegetarian for so long before now that even though I'll eat meat every so often, I still almost always choose the vegetarian options anyways.

I have heard of vegetarians that make an exception for poultry occasionally.

Meat isn't bad for you generally. The problem with meat is the people who eat meat in the western world usually eat too much of it. I know of families that put half pound piece of chicken on the dinner table every night. That's more than twice what you should eat in a day at one meal. Eating 3oz of meat is perfectly healthy, but most people don't eat 3oz

Gotcha, and I really wasn't trying to be a dick about it. It's just that I hear people all the time say, "Yeah, I'm a vegetarian, I only eat chicken and fish." And I want to inform them that does not make you a vegetarian. Anyways, thanks for clarifying.

You can get protein in other ways besides consuming meat, so it's not really a thing to lose weight from. True, if you don't watch your diet while being a vegetarian it could get really unhealthy, but if you're like most vegetarians you're smart about it. I actually think I'm a lot healthier than most people who eat meat- less fat in my diet.
