I might buy something like this, depending on how much it costs. I'm already spending most of my dough on skiing.

I hate to burst your bubble, but there are already products like that out there: rollerski, rollerski combo, trailskate, and a few others. They cover just about everyone too: xcountry, telemark, and alpine

Isn't it ridiculously expensive to take out a patent on something ?

how would it work? wouldnt it kill to land anything with much air? I would buy some if they were relatively cheap (200) but if they costed to much then i wouldnt buy them cause i wouldnt use them as much as skis i would use in witner.

yeah but that gate ski thing would be SO hard to do newschool stuf with. that would be cool if it was made longer so you were more stable and stuff but then they become heavy.

Gregg, the products available dont even compare...the base is too short, they dont flex like a ski, so they cant jump like a ski, and the boot provides no support. my product would be compatable with the UFS standard for aggressive blade mounting, so you could use Salomon, razor, or USD boots. they would be much longer, about a 170, be able to carve, and have enough clearance so that they actually are all terrain...you could finally cross up in the summer

newschooler14....THANK YOU...YOU RULE...that is just what i am saying...you cant do a tailgrab with those trailblades...and definitely no fast carving. they wont be any heavier than your ski equipment because the boots will be much lighter and the 'ski' will be made of carbon fiber, or composite...they only heavy part will be the wheels, which the boot should make up for. its like the difference between twintips and skiblades

If you could ride, in the summer, on what feels like a ski, do you realize the possibilities?
That sounds like so much fun that the pope will call it a sin. This could only be truly be justified by an orgasm. (oh what do you know, another sin)

How could the crash be anyworse than packed snow and ice? Crashing is half the fun.

I havent figured out what i would have to charge, the boots will be bought separate from the ski (our product), that way you can customize your boot, choose your company. and that is becoming a good selection with the UFS standard. it is going to cost me over 5000 just to start making the product...so i figure 300 is fair. think of what you pay for skis...oh and it should be ok landing with the flex of them.

That will be wierd tho, a light boot and a heavy ski? Right now (with winter equipment) there is a good balance.
Yeah crashing would really hurt, on snow you slide and have many layers of clothes...usually. The surface of a mountain in the summer is not so forgiving, rocks, sticks, dirt ect. And I wouldnt go jibbing in the summer with even a hoody on.
And what about landing, there is much less friction on snow, but when you land from, say 10ft in the air on dirt or grass or something wouldn't the friction be too much and youd just stick?
Dont mean to be the skeptic here but I just see some possible logistics problems, but if you can really pull it off go for the gusto my freind.

I'll buy your first prototype pair.
'Who ordered the turkey club?' the waitress yelled across the small diner.
'I did!' The man excitedly replied.
Promptly, an over-excited turkey ran out from the back and beat the man to death with a large wooden bat.

the friction of landing wouldnt be too much if you have wheels...i dont know if you were picturing this as a normal ski, but it has wheels with abec5s. i wouldnt recommend buying the prototype pair :) they are steel mounts with spruce flex peices. the first model should be made of carbon and composite. about grinding...i should be able to have a grindplate underfoot...i wasnt sure, but if the feedback seems to be that i should, i will.

Well, in that case, make sure I can slap a tele binding on it! Sounds good, no, better than the other products out there. Just be sure to set it up so that we can show those mountainboarders that they don't have the monopoly on the summer slopes!

gregg, thats just what i am saying...we need our mt boards...i hadnt thought of making teli mounts though...where would you link it, right under the toe, or a little past it? i think it would be easier to just use the chairlift...but that will be good for xc.
If I close my mind in fear; just fuckin slap me

ya, good point...where would you mount the teli link, how far from the toe...skilopolis is working with me on the idea

Crashing wouldn't be that bad... consider the sport of bmx biking... I'm pretty sure it hurts more to come off a ramp and land in a mass of metal on pavement.. much worse than dirt.
What sort of conditions would they be suited for? I know that our hill in the summer is crazy (huge rocks, tall grass, big holes)... would the hill that these things are used on have to be perfectly 'groomed' dirt?
If someone made a dirt park (like bmx parks, but on a slope obviously) and your invention worked just like skis, then that would be amazing and I'm sure TONS of people would buy them.
$5,000 to start up sounds extremely cheap. I know someone who was looking into starting a ski company and he said he needed a $300,000 investment. If you think about what you can get for $5,000, it's basically nothing.
Just my thoughts..

ok I think I just came up with something you guys have ALL overlooked, it might not be a big problem, but I think it's sorta substantial. ok, I know nothing about skating, but I do know skate wheels aren't too big. and if you look at mountain boards, they have huge-ass inflatable wheels (I think, I've never seen one in person, and I'm too lazy to lok up a pic). the weight of the wheels and stuff is ok with a board because you have both of your legs to lift in when in the air, but with skis, you're using one leg for each ski, so you'd need more strength. I know you said they'd be lightweight, but I still can't really see it. and if you used little tiny skate wheels, landings would be hard, like no cushioning, and depending on what your design is like, I have no clue really as to what your wheel setup would be like, the wheels could get like jammed sorta with dirt or grass clumps. this may not make any sense ot any of you, but try and visualize it and you might realize what I mean.

ya, 5000 isnt bad, but that is just to make the mold for the skate. i am figuring that the mountainblade will be most useful on grassy ski slopes...with 12 inch tires, it wont have to be groomed. i am thinking of making my own summer park out of bales of hay and dirt...the only weight of the blade will be from the wheels, and i wont know how much they weigh until i try them...but considering most of the bulk of mtboards is from the metal framing, i dont think they are too heavy. my main goal is to get good carving out of them

yeah you could definately find somewhere to make little jumnps and stuff to use these things that owuld be soooo cool. What would you do to brake? 12 inches sound bog but i guess since you have to go over such uneven surfaces and stuff.

12 inches does sound big, but when you think about it, you'll only be 6 inches off of the ground, not 12.

yeah but maybe change it to like 8 cause the more i think about it standing 6 inches above the ground is a big change. but maybe not i have no idea. how high are mountainboards?

i am going to try out a few different wheel sizes...but the wheels dont determine the ground clearance. i just figure that large wheels will be more all-terrain...plus they will provide more absorbsion...i may still end up using 8 or 9 inch, mt boards use 8,9, and a few use 12.5s. actually 9 does sound like a good idea, i gotta go draw that out...thanks for the help people
