VW Golf common problems?

looking at buying a 98, 120,000 miles, manual trans, stock... I know nothing about golfs, except timing belts usually need to be replaced at like 100k and some burn oil
so what should I watch for, any other common problems, things to know/worry about? Google wasn't helping me

Im driving a golf 3 syncro(4wd) -98 and I am really happy with it.

The good thing about golf's is that WHATEVER breaks down, you can find it on the german ebay for less than nothing. It's a supercommon car and spare parts are sold for pennies!

I have some problems with the engine heat in my car but it worked all cold Swedish winter so I guess it's alright. I recently replaced my old oil and it was a bit burned. But with the new oil the fuel consumption has been reduced by 50% or something, the fuel gauge doesn't move at all anymore.

I dont know how cheap golf parts are in the US but I guess you could buy from the german ebay (ebay.de) and still get spare parts awfully cheap.

This forum filters out MOST of the useless ns'ers, but thanks I'll check out the German eBay, I woulda been way sweeter to get awd like you got but it's the US, what can ya do
