Alcohol in dorm room?

So.... I got written up for having an empty beer can in my room. It was clean and showed no trace of alcohol. Is it illegal to have a 100% clean can and still get in trouble for being underage?

I got caught with an empty can but I said I was just using it for a spitter and I got it out of the recycling can. worked for me anyways
