my only point and line of thinking is, it looks like he lands more on his face, then scorpians over.

and all the helmet would have done is stick out an inch or more from his forehead making the angle of his neck snapping backwards sharper..

Agreed. A helmet would have helped prevent head trauma like a concussion, but a normal BMX helmet does nothing for neck and spine support. He would not have been worse of with a helmet, but it wouldn't have saved him from breaking his neck.
