So, I just finished an edit, and I really want you to give me your worst in terms of critiquing. I have a couple points in mind, but I'll save them for later, because I want to see what the public has to say first. Enjoy!



P.S. I'm a HORRID interview/public speaker, sorry.

Yeah, a little less talking, a little to more biking. Shots were great though, music fit well, I like the interview style though, maybe do some with the riders explaining a specific shot/trick. Also, try to light your face evenly for interviews, only half of it was lit.

Again, another thing on my list. I was thinking about reshooting it, but i thought it added a little effect to the interview. Some people might like it, others won't, personal preference I guess.

As for only me being interviewed, I needed to publish this by a deadline, and the riders are all out of town at the moment. Otherwise, I would have.

Damn, I wanted to use that song :/ Very nice edit though

That interview had kinda weak lighting. A lamp woulda fixed that just fine. Also, A little framing tip for interviews: shoot towards a corner of the room to add depth. Also audio seemed quiet. If you have Magic Lantern you could up the gain, or just up the gain a little in post.

In the first night shoot, it felt a little underexposed. I'd say up the exposure in post a little, if you're using looks, it should be pretty easy to do.

Also the bike shots felt like just pan after pan, mix it up!

Other than that I thought it was pretty good. The posts above are also valid.

Thank you very much. As for the exposure on the night shots, my ISO was running pretty high (around 1250) already, and those shots were all at 24 so I could bring my shutter speed as low as possible.

I don't have much more equipment other than a fluid head tripod, but I'm working on fixing that, but that point is EXTREMELY valid.

Same. If you are going to have that much of the video be interview style at least get proper lighting. I felt like the cutting to interviews between every spot was a little to much. Rather if you want to differentiate between places use some nice transition clips of driving etc. and some titles or put your voice over some footage. The bike footage was all flowing together nicely good clean cuts.

I personally really liked the edit, and the interview was a good idea. I think you just need to be more clear and confident in what you are saying in the interview AND you really really really need to light it better. Treat it like a portrait and light accordingly. Some lighting situations make peoples faces look fucked. Find out what works for your subject if you don't want to go with the nice softbox even light.

Clear and confident speech with me, uhh no. Another reason why I should have interviewed the riders instead. And softbox, maybe I'll make one for the next time I need nice light.

The ending did end a little suddenly, and (as stated before) you mix up your shots. You keep audience interest and it's not as boring as just simply shooting something in the same place for too long.

Pretty good. People have said most of what I was going to say, but the one thing that stood out to me was how much you talked about "getting nice shots". To me (although I know it was unintentional) this just makes you sound cocky. If your going to do interview of the filmer he should be talking about the stars of the edit, not how well he (you) filmed.

It ended pretty abruptly too, but overall I definitely enjoyed it.

Yea bump the decibels in the interview, I found the interview was very quite, maybe use an external mic or speak louder, or just raise the audio track, preferably the first 2

I mean, I got like a shot or two that I was proud of, i really shouldn't have even put that saying in the edit. Like I'm looking at it now, and all I'm thinking to myself is "why did I say that, why did I make that cut like that." Needless to say, I'm going to take this edit down in a couple of days, because I am not happy with it at all. My boss is also unhappy at the use of the word "fuck" a couple times because it gives his company an unprofessional look (even though it's not tied to them at all?)

Working on trying to get an external mic, but, I have no moeny and am an intern, so that will have to wait a while. I am a kind of quiet speaker though, and I was doing my best to try and be louder, but apparently it wasn't enough. Thanks though!

That's really lame of your boss though. Swearing isn't a big deal, nor is it any of his business.

So when you take this down are you gonna touch it up and re-upload? Cause it's definitely a well done video

I'm going to totally re-edit it. Different interviews, less black space, better filming, a couple shot cuts, But I'll keep the song. I just need a lot of improvement on it, maybe not in other people's eyes, but in mine.

I'm an intern at Evolve Snow Camps though, and lots of kids that would be potential patrons of the camp in Ontario watch my videos, so I understand where he's coming from on it.

That was a really good edit.  As people have mentioned it ended a little abruptly and there was too much of the interview.  Those were the only two things that I didn't like.

personally i actually enjoyed the lighting in the interview.. seemed kinda abstract... umm it was good... but u said you had your iso on like 1000 something?!??!?! NEVER well not never but for good video never bring your iso over like 800.... heck try to stay below 500.... try to keep shutter speed and iso constant and just adjust aperture as far as lighting goes... overall good though and i agree with everything that has been said. and i mean i noticed grain in the video and thats cause you had your iso so high so really try to keep it low man..nice job though!

Haha, nik is fairly seasoned, but i think he was shooting with a lens with a minimum aperture of f4, so he pretty much needs to shoot at that iso for night shots...

Yeah this is true. some of those situations definitely called for a high ISO in order to get enough light. not the best thing to do, but sometimes necessary

Haha, I have a 50mm F/1.8 but didn't have it with me at the time. I definitely know where my ISO should and shouldn't be, but personally, I HATE that footage there. It's bland and boring, and really bugged me, but I was really at a lack of footage to put in the edit.
