Where did I say that?
Are you implying that I was implying that religious people deserve no respect?
Bold implication sir.
the asains on campus that walk side by side in a group of like 8 and take up the entire sidewalk and hallways while they talk in their foreign language. it's america, learn to speak some damn enlgish.
another thing that just gets me going is when you go to pick someone up at a certain time and they make you wait forever when they said they'd be ready to go at that time.
Morals aren't instilled in our society because of religion, they are instilled in spite of religion. Rules of religion were based of already understood moral codes, and now (societies perception of) morality isn't able to freely adapt and change along with the context of our society, or even just change when we think through basic religious doctrine and realize some rules are utter bullshit and don't apply in many situations, because religious people have bound themselves to these ideals that they believe are "divinely inspired", and therefore can't be wrong.
Are you saying humanitarian aid can't be administered without religion? How about we think about all of the funding that goes towards spreading religion, instead of being used to spread practical education, basic resources, and infrastructure? Do you think starving kids in 3rd world countries want bibles or food and clean water? Or we could think about all of the war and destruction in the past that has been done in the name of religion.
To me, someone who buys self-improvement books is probably unintelligent/unsuccessful, and reading a shitty book isn't going to help that. Instead of reading a self-help book, go sign up for some night classes at the local CC if you want to better yourself.
And most people that I've met seem to be religious because they were raised believing a certain religion and refuse to honestly question how ridiculous it is. People find comfort in knowledge, true or false it may be. People fear the unknown. People love to hear everything is going to be alright. Religion is a comforter, a solid rock in an ever changing and uncertain reality. Unfortunately, religion is also a lie. If you personally need to lie to yourself to get through the day, that's fine with me, just don't push your bullshit onto me, or tell me that you know the secrets of the universe because you have some book a bunch of people wrote a couple thousand years ago when they thought the Earth was the center of the universe. I honestly don't mind people who are religious and keep it a personal experience, I just don't like those smug idiots that act like they know all of these things that I don't, when their "knowledge" isn't based off anything but their own fear of uncertainty.
I will say that Christianity was a uniting and driving force behind the early development of the Western world, and that we wouldn't be this far advanced as a global society without it.
