Art of Flight - Straight to iTunes

When the movie 'art of flight' was released , it went pretty much straight to digital release. Since then it has been a huge hit, and has been one of the most popular movies on iTunes. Why can't the ski movie producers learn from this strategy and release their movies on the web early as well. I don't have the money to travel to see a premier and I am not able to ship a hard copy of the movie either , so I'm pretty much out of luck. It just seems like the snowboarders are years ahead of the ski movies, and it really pisses me off. Anyone agree? disagree?

Snowboard movies, especially anything by Red Bull, sell WAY more copies than any ski movie. The advertising and funding for Art of Flight was ridiculous, and I guarantee it will (probably already is) the highest selling ski/snowboard flick ever. Ski movies don't sell many copies and getting licensing rights and everything for iTunes takes time, and the companies make much more profit off hard copies. If the companies don't make a profit, there won't be any ski movies to watch at all.. Give it time, they'll be on iTunes soon enough

Apple is actually really good at giving $$ to the artists who sell media via iTunes.

I agree that all action sports flicks should do this same thing with releasing films for digi download the day after their first premiere. I would still go see the movie at a live event because that experience is much different with free swag, fist fights, etc. Though as is the case with Art of Flight, the shows are all sold out here in JH tonight. Good thing I've already seen it 3x.

itunes take a solid chunk from the movie, alot of ski movie companies arent that big and cant afford to do straight to itunes. i could see like msp or tgr doing it, but no one else. brain farm is a big company with tons of money, art of flight wasnt made to make money.

It's so tough because companies don't make a damn thing from selling their movies on Itunes. Not that they're raking in huge bucks from DVD sales but it certainly helps more than Itunes sales. That's why everyone waits to release it on there.

2 Reasons why they should publish on iTunes even if they are making less margin than retail/hardcopy:

1) Capture some customers who would have otherwise pirated (sad reality), if you make it available for $10 on iTunes immediately, at least some potential pirates will grab it upon release. These are people who would not pay $30 for a DVD. Not saying it's right, but it's reality.

2) Reach a larger market/audience. More eyeballs would net a bigger sponsor budget I would think?

why does everyone think iTunes doesn't give the movie producers enough cash? Does anyone actually have proof of this? Also, they dont have to use iTunes, they could go through multiple other online paid mulitmedia distributers, or even independently. ANND if they arent making enough money online, simply charge a bit more. I would pay poorboyz 35-40$ for a copy of thier movie on iTunes right now, i dont give a shit, i just really want to see it, and i have no way of getting a copy.

also , if ONE ski company did release their movie online right away , especially a smaller company , they would be able to sell tons of copys before thier competition even comes out.

anyways, im just really pissed that they make us wait so long to distribute online, and i really do think they are missing out on a lot of customers by waiting so long.

If by pirate he means watch once and than never watch again because you don't want to spend $20+ the movie I can see where he is coming from.

I bought The Way I See It on iTunes for like $7 but would never have bought the dvd just because I didn't want to pay that much.

But there are plenty of ski movies that I don't buy because I know my friends will have them and after I see them once I am fine with not seeing them again but if there was option for me to own them for $5 or so on iTunes I would totally be down for that.

Bad excuse for stealing movies. This isn't hollywood, companies don't have a done of dough to throw around and if you want ski movies to be as good as snowboard movies, then they are gonna need every penny they can get.

I don't know, nor do I care. The way I look at it is, it's the same as going to a friend's house and watching the movie. If you like it, go buy it, if you don't, then you just saved your self some money. Of course downloading a movie doesn't get you the bonus features, and they are rarely full dvd quality. There is no difference between torrenting a level 1 movie, art of flight, some hollywood blockbuster, or a million+ selling game. The only reason you think that is because you care about that company more then the others.

what an empty, condescending statement, can't form a more coherent thought in defense of your opinions?

Red bull and quicksilver and every other sponsor would love if the film was released for free. They arn't making any return on sales, just exposure. This is why the free distribution platform makes so much more sense. Brands and athletes get more exposure, and viewers get more content. But it's more tricky to convince a big brand to give you beaucoup bucks to make up for sales than it is to force or guilt kids into buy the movies. (not for long on the latter though)

I think Retallack is a very good example of this. Half the people who bought it wouldn't have gotten it if it wasn't available on iTunes that night. I'm sure that more than made up the revenue they would have received by DVD and then digi download.

we'd love to see movies available on itunes/digi download right away. This is in no way taking money away from film companies but opening up the opportunity for more fans to watch their films.

my understanding is that film companies make more profit off dvd sales as well. plus, it benefits ski shops because you have to buy them from the ski shop. but you would thinking web hosting has gotten so cheap that each company should be able to sell digital copies from their website, but only a few companies do that. email or tweet your favorite film company and see what they say. also, i think a lot of people do pirate ski vids because buying that many dvds every year is really expensive. another good reason for digital downloads.

completely agree, I feel like level 1 and poorboyz are just missing out on selling loads of digital content while the hype is still really high. Every year there are more and more people that DEPEND on online content who are left out for months.

i used to buy tons of DVDs but there's about zero chance of me buying one ski DVD in the next 5 years. but i will buy digi downloads for the 1 or two times i watch it. i can understand not wanting to lose money to itunes but i can't think of any good reason companies shouldnt just sell digi downloads on their own website

Companies shouldn't use itunes, but should instead release it for download on their websites instead. That way they don't lose a huge chunk to apple and make 99% profit as opposed to something like 85-90% for DVD sales and 50% for itunes.

meanwhile, art of flight is destroying movie sales. what about people who only buy one snow movie all season? AoF takes the cake before anyone else is at the table. and they're still going to sell out most if not all of their premieres.

i torrent all the ski movies I watch these days, basically because I only want to watch them 1 time. I watch them once and then delete them. I used to buy about 10 ski/snowboard flicks a season, that was about 5 yrs ago.

I did spend $16.50 to go to the art of flight premier, torrented the movie afterwards, and then still went to the shop and spent $42 for the DVD/BlueRay because I wanted the bonus features, and I feel art of flight is more of a collectors item. Art of flight is a film I will watch over and over again.

i am sad to say that i torrent some ski movies as well. the reason for this is because the movies are available through torrents long before they are released online, so i really have no choice. although i do pay for 2 ski movies every year.

By hosting it on the site, you download a digi download format which in turn might be easier to spread through torrents and from friend to friend. itunes files are highly protected file types.

MSP and TGR basically go straight to Itunes.  PBP too.  I don't think it makes a big difference if they release them a couple of weeks early or not.

Which companies are you talking about?  As I said before, the big ski companies go to Itunes pretty quickly.  I'm not sure that selling them earlier would make much of a difference.

What ski movies need, compared to The Art of Flight, is one of the cameras Brain Farm uses.  They can't afford them, but truth be told neither can any of the other snowboard film companies.    Brain Farm has a budget, thanks to Red Bull, that no one else can match.
