Good lens for 7d?

i recently just bought a canon 7d and I'm looking to get a wide angle lens for it....i have read nothing but good reviews about this lens but wanted nser's opinion.

has any shot with this lens before

its the canon ef 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Zoom

The crop on the 7d make the 17-40 not that wide of a lens, the Tokina 11-16 would be your best bet.

Have you ever used a 17-40? Doesnt seem like it. I own one and love it. At 17 on a 7d, its PLENTY wide for follow cams on glidecams, but at 40 its a nice normal focal length. Love this lens and I'd highly recommend it. If you specifically want an UWA, the tokina is the way to go, but if you want something more versatile, go for the 17-40 or Tamron 17-50 2.8

the photos i do is a lot of action photos....i have also read that the canon lens is weather sealed?

Yes it is, but it will only be weather sealed if your camera body is. Luckily the 7D is. Ive filmed biking in the pouring rain with my 7D and 17-40 and it got completely soaked, and it was perfectly fine. As long as it is not submerged in water, it is fine.

I own both the 17-40 and the 11-16. I enjoy the 11-16 for follows so much more. Both are great lenses but like the posts above said, 17mm is wide, but not that wide. the 11-16 is a true UWA on a crop sensor but with the 17-40 you get a bit more focal length.

I have use a 17-55 on my 60D, and always wish I had that few mm's extra on it. I find just a TAD too tight. But other than that, It would fit for what the OP wants to do with it.

17-40 has better contrast then the tam 17-50, but the 2.8 is handy, especially with the 7d's sub par iso noise.

if you need the speed, get the tam. if you ever might be upgrading to FF, or just want a better built lens, i highly recommend the 17-40 if you can get over the soft corners(not really that big a deal, and how soft they are fluctuates from lens to lens)

It's a fisheye so it really limits your use. And it's expensive as hell.

if you have the ability to drop over a grand on a fisheye, I sugest you do some real research on actual photography sites

I mean, there is a reason zooms dont go down to 15 or 10 and up to like 50, it would be a very expensive lens to make without it looking like shit.

IDK on quality, don't know anything about this lens. But its 15-85mm (24-135 equivelent). Pretty great length for a crop body.

good rule of thumb: variable apertures starting at 3.5 going to 5.6 aren't very good

Is your opinion really that warped by marketing? As if full frame is objectively better than crop sensor...

Nah. It was more how you said "shooting stars" it really wasn't that funny. IMO, crop or 1.3 crop for sports is necessary just cus the 5dmkII can focus very fast. But for portraits full frame is that much better.

About that lens. Its not going to be an L lens, its plastic, no weather sealing, and its aperature varies, but 15-85 is pretty darn good range for a crop sensor.

I'm a telephoto guy myself. If I were back in Alaska for the winter, I would be using a GH2 just for the 2x crop so I could snipe lines. Telephoto on FF must be frustrating; 70-200 on 1.6x crop still feels way too short.

no, you are confusing the 5d with something that actually has useable auto focus, like the 1d

i hate 1.6 crops, when i buy a lens, i want it to act exactly how it is suppose to. I also enjoy wide angle stuff more then tele tho, so I want my 17-40 to actually be a 17-40

I actually love my 70-200 on my FF, but I haven't shot anything that demands 200+ yet. Might get a 300 4L IS or a 1.4x tele if I find myself needing more reach

or you can use the 20+ mp sensor of yours and crop

anyway, back to the 15-55 discussion. This tokina is no longer produced, but i'm sure you could track one down with ease
