Its a normal GIF but they just did a really good job taking the photos/cropping and lining up shit PERFECT so its a seemless loop.

They said it differs from a normal GIF in that a normal GIF is a series of stills, often taken from a movie or something. all of these are made from a single photo, right?

The dude turning the page is 42 frames.

Here's how I would do it - seems like how it would be done...

they take 42 frames from a video clip, using one of the stills as the master frame, the frame that's used for the background and shit that doesn't move. Then, each frame is taken in order and layed under the master in PS... parts of the master are erased where the action takes place, and special care is taken to ensure the last frame looks identical to the first. You could do that by mixing up different parts from different frames in PS, using pieces from a couple frames in reverse order, etc.

Seems like it would be more pain than it's worth, haha. I really want to try to make one though.

There's 42 frames in that one of the guy turning the page. You shoot 2 seconds of footage on your camera, and take 42 frames.

Just looking at his head....

Take the pause, as though he is reading the page are the first two, so for two frames of your GIF are the same. For the next 19, you take the 19 frames of your video of him moving his head from his left to his right as the page turns. Start with the first one, lay it under your master frame, and erase out the head area in the master frame, so the slight change in the frame under shows through.

That's frame 3 (remember the first two are the same thing, both the first image with no motion for the pause). Do that again, 19 times, and you will have your 19 frames of his head moving left to right.

To make it move back, it looks like in that one (and a lot of them), they just take the 19 frames of motion, and then sequence them back up backwards, like playing a video clip in reverse. So, frame 1 and 2 would be the pause, 3-22 would be the left to right, 23-42 being right to left, where frame 42 looks exactly like 3.

I'm mostly typing this out because it's 4:40 and I'm super intrigued by these things. I've never actually made one.

That's so sick.  I wonder if I can find a way to set a nice GIF as a desktop background.  I know there are programs that do stuff like that.
