About to pull the trigger on a new 50mm prime for my 60D. Debating between the Cheap Canon 1.8, or getting an old Pentax super takumar f1.4 and adapting it. Im a bit concerned just dude to the fact that the pentax is so old, but I have read good things. The Canon I have read good and bad about as well. Anyone have an input on this one?
I have both the 50 mm 1.8 Canon along with a Pentax SMC 50 mm 1.7.
They're both awesome, the Canon is cheap and good, ~100 bucks. It's sharp, good in low light, kind of crappy autofocus but that doesnt matter. Never had an issue with it. Same goes for my Pentax. I just recently started shooting with it and i have yet to come across and issue. I like how it fits on the camera, the focus ring feels great in the fingers too. It's a little soft wide open but IMO the colours are somewhat better than the canon. I say get either one - it might be worth it to have something that has autofocus in your kit (not like i ever use it) but you never know.
You can't go wrong either way.
Thanks guys! Yeah AF is not an issue for me i shoot 95 percent video. Lookin like pentax, just a little skeptical of buying a used lens from the 70's but it seems people do it all the time haha
older lenses tend to be just as good if not better than some modern lenses. The canon 50mm 1.8 is a cheaply built and overall pretty poor lens but works for people on a budget who want AF. But, i think the pentax is a much better build and probably will look better too.
Amen to that. When I first got my 50mm f/1.8 I thought it was pretty decent given the price, but it's almost not even worth getting and instead just going right to the $400 50mm f/1.4.
