Speaker help for new car.

So I recently made a thread on my new car for rim help, but I realized that rims are expensive and I can actually afford a new speaker system. The one in my car right now I believe only one of the however many speakers works. So I turn to NS for help. Some background info on my car is:
It is a 99 Subaru Impreza Outback sport with a basic stereo CD stereo system. So right now all I am looking for is a new set of speakers with possible like a 12" sub or recommend me something. It is a birthday present so I am fairly lenient on price... Thank you.

Don't waste the money. Buy something useful. Aftermarket sound systems in cars are fucking stupid.

Right now my system barely works and you can get a decent set for about 100$ and it is a birthday present, so what else would I buy?

I would strongly recommend going to crutchfield.com. I recently bought speakers there and they are so helpful. Their prices are also hard to beat. You can select you model, make and year and they will show you all speakers that fit your car. They also come with an instruction booklet for installing them into YOUR SPECIFIC CAR(at least with the receiver i bought).

go to futureshop and lurk the sales.
you might get a deal with a package.

but also i think you should get the headunit and speakers now then if you want go boxing day shopping for an amp and a sub because its not really necessary to have and you can get an unreal deal in a few months.

I have JL audio cx series in my xterra and love them. Not sure about the fit for your car, but look into them. The highs are great, and bass is pretty decent. Mine are also powered by an amp and I have a pioneer premiere head unit. Still considering putting a sub in or not.

Anyone have any other suggestions I like pyros but it seems like it would become a little pricy, so maybe replacement speakers that wouldn't require a new amp.

yes definitely check crutchfield, i have a 2000 impreza outback sport and i had to do a shit ton of work to get my 6.5"s to fit my front slots, cause i didn't really follow the guides. 4" fit in the back, and sub doesnt matter, just kill the bass in the doors cause the panels blow for bass sound

You don't need an amp or sub.

Right now, I have a headunit and those four speakers, and I've payed $200 and am going to do the install myself/with friends.
