Dear Skiing,

I’m not in love with you anymore and come to think about it; I don’t know if I ever was. I’m twenty-one years old. When I was nineteen, I thought I wanted to be in the industry. When I was sixteen, I made the switch from snowboarding. When I was eight, I switched to snowboarding so I didn’t have to ski with my mom. When I was six, I got my first season pass and I don’t remember how young I was when I first had a pair of skis on my feet.

Every day, every hour, and every minute I’m thinking about skiing. I think about all of the fun I had, all of the stories that are completely true that no one can believe, and everywhere it has taken me. None of my favorite memories involve having a ski on each foot. I remember times when I had fun skiing but those are few and far between. I’m in love with the lifestyle and only in love with the lifestyle. It took a long time but I finally came to terms with the difference and I hate it. My skier friends pick their classes to spend as much time at the mountain as possible. They love skiing. I’m jealous of that.

If you asked me why I ski I would say I just do. It’s pathetic. I don’t even have fun doing it. I think I’m pathetic for feeling this way. They say if you don’t like it, why do it? I say, I just do. It is really frustrating. There is noting I would rather do either. I want to get as far away from skiing as possible. That is the only way I’ll be able to know if I would actually care if I never did it again. I want to love skiing but I know it’s just not going to be true.

IF3 is going on two hours from me right now and I’m happy I’m not there. This way, I don’t have to see everyone else being so incredibly excited to see the movies and start their countdowns to when they will be back on skis. It is a really weird feeling considering the first time I went to IF3, I would have rather been skiing but it was a great consolation prize.

I just wanted to get that off my chest. There are so many more things I want to say that I just can’t put into words. If you love skiing, try to figure out why so you’ll never forgot it, and never let that fire die.

progression =/= to enjoying skiing in the slightest. The two are often entirely unrelated.

All my best days skiing have been when I do something I've never done before. all my boring/uninteresting days have been doing the same old, same old not pushing myself or anyone else im with.

and even if you ski in the shittiest of conditions on the shittiest of hills, after an hour you'll be having a blast.... fuck the bullshit live to ski & not the other way around and you'll never lose perspective on how special this shit is.

Weird. A ton of my best days I havent learned a damn thing. Its either been good times with friends doing normal shredding, an especially funny day on the hill where we did nothing but fool around, etc. Not saying progression isn't fun as well, but in my mind its in no way a prerequisite. But hey, its called freeskiing for a reason.

this. Progressing is fun, but it gives it more of a serious vibe and doesn't let you just fool around. My best days have been just doing stupid tricks on stupid features.

For me there also seems to be a direct correlation between crappiness of park and stupidness of tricks. Last year me and a buddy spent a half day in Bridger Bowls godawful park doing the dumbest tricks imaginable. For example Natas spins on top of a barrel until you were dizzy.

Wow, that's an impressively troubled relationship with something that seems quite simple and straight forward. It makes me think that this reflects your life in general, and that you might be suffering from a depression. Or you're just a whiny person who likes to whine about stuff. Or you're taking a piss. 2 hours away?  So you live on the east coast then......come out west to tahoe/any other big mountain area that gets a ton of snow.  I often wonder why I'm missing a night out in SF when I'm driving up to tahoe every weekend/weekdays.  It's not until I get a lap in I remember why I'm here.  Idk dude I got  burnt out on park skiing and I never really gave it a chance.  I know a buddy of mine who also moved from the midwest to seattle and was a big park rat.  He got about 50 days in and about 2 of those WEREN'T on his bentchetlers.  Living out west and being a powder hound really changes the game.  I also think you really learn to appreciate the opportunity and your surroundings more when you live out here.  I'm 25 and I love skiing because when I'm shredding deep snow I don't have to think about any of the things that you are needing to get off your chest.

Thats really sad... I went through a phase of this when I was getting into park skiing. Try travelling a bit. Go and ski some different mountains, I have never skiied powder but I hear its incredible and completely different from any kind of other skiing.

Being completely honest, it sounds like you are depressed. My best friend who is suffering from sever depression, ponders things with a similar tone and negative perspective as have done about skiing. Maybe not loving skiing isn't the root of your problem about not loving skiing.

On a side note, you may actually be depressed and more so in the winter. And the reason you just ski is to get outside and get some vitamin d. Seasonal Affective Disorder. I went through a period like this freshmen year of college cause I was never getting out. I was never getting that dopamine rush... and realized that skiing gave it to me.. even though I didn't think that I loved it back then. Now I'm fully in love with it and happy as can be. Maybe you don't love it. I'd try not doing it for a while, then go once on a nice sunny day and see if it affects your attitude/how you are feeling in general.
