Powder Ski that can RAIL groomers ?

Hey guys,
Im 5"6 135 lbs. As I;m not a huge guy, I ski with a little bit more finesse and I can't huck around a huge burly ski. I'm 16 years old by the way. I mainly ski the west coast (BC) with a planned trip to Utah for hopefully, some POW. I mainly ski with my dad who's a guy described by his ski of choice: the Mantra.
He's an oldschool skier who loves to fly down the groomers. Now, I don't know if any of you guys waterski, but my theory is there is nothing like cutting through glass on an early morning. The same goes for skiing Powder, there truly is nothing like it.
So here's my dilemma, I want to buy a powder ski, I like the wider skis and how they just plow through crud. But, I need one that I can at least keep up to my dad on the groomers. Essentially, I'm almost looking for a POW ski "quiver-of-one," yeah, I know its a tall order. I'm only 16 so I'm not inclined to dropping money for two pairs of skis.
So, if you guys could give me a hand, Let the Ski debate battle begin.

you said you might be interested in the bent chetler? i ride the bent chetler and it does rail the groomers. its stiffer than the opus. however they can ski groomers about the same. you said you dont want that burly of a ski and your 5.6 so i would recommend the opus because i am 5.11 and i ride the 183. if you really feel you can handle it go for it but get it center mounted. thats my 2 cents

Salomon Rocker 2's. Rode a pair at Killington during the Dew tour this past weekend, and they were awesome, so playful, so carvy, I'm 5'9 and i rode the 184s and they were awesome everywhere on the hill.

I think that the Folsom Gambit is the best pow ski out there. The 26m turning radius makes for a ski that can charge at high speed but still scrub speed quickly. It definitely doesnt have the slarvy feel that most other pow skis have unless you want it to. They are a bit pricier but you get what you oay for.

Another vote for the Bent Chetlers. I'm 5-9" on the 183cm and they rail. Perfect ski for the Bird

based on the design, i'd also recommend the JJs, Blogs, and Automatics

so whats wrong with mantras? I love mine, I weigh the same as you, i would really look into them. I haven't found another ski that's decent in soft snow that you can lay over on groomers and have it feel like you're on rail road tracks like them. A sultan 94 is pretty decent on hardpack also.

Didnt read OPs text, but I rail the shit out of groomers on my Moment Bibbys.. The only speedlimit I find is due to my legs wich I havent worked out enough..

Not to start the old Armada suckles goat teat war... but Armada Suckles Goat teats. There are much better skiis than armada. I have been on the TST and was not impressed. It is great in the powder and crud but it is by no means a groomer ski, barely groomer able, definately does not "RAIL". JJ same boat. Decent in the powder and fun if you like doing back slapping wheelies off a wet noodle when you do anything over 20ft. Remember, just because you have T-Halls skiis does not make you T-Hall. Watch any video of armada and you will see what I am talking about regarding flapper landings and catwalks. I have had a bunch of "fun days" popping around on Armada sticks but way too much hype!

4front make an amazing product. the taper and eliptical cut match the side cut which means you get the best of both worlds, powder and edge hold on groomers. Renegade is what I am mentioning here.

ON3P- so impressed with these.  was on caylors and super fun and very able. none of that crazy wheelie feel. Same for their C&D model.  The Wrenegade is blow your mind good too! The ski that I am really excited about is the new Billy Goat 191. May be too much ski for you but I have a friend riding them and wow! My next ski without a doubt.

There are a ton of others that will do but I am looking indy for my next skis.

Bibby Pro. [/thread]

Been on this ski for the better part of the past 3 seasons including this one and I'm continually amazed at how well a ski this wide performs on groomers.

Bibby Pro has better performance on hardpack but I like the Jag Shark on steeper terrain (because of the flat tail and less sidecut). The Bibby does better on groomers and this is likely attributed to a stiffer flex and with a sidecut more applicable to firmer snow than the Jag Shark. Also, if you're one to really drive and press the tips when cruising on groomers, the tips on the Bibby Pro can handle greater pressure than the Jag Shark without getting bucked. While I did spend almost all of the 10/11 season on the Jag Shark with a good mixture of resort and backcountry skiing, that ski is strictly my go-to backcountry pow ski with the Bibby as my resort pow ski.



Here's an old video I made to give a good idea of how the Bibby handles most conditions... not sure there's any groomer action but something to consider:

Change firmer snow to groomers. On firm and steep, I prefer the Jag Shark for the same reasons mentioned above.

you can definitely rail on jus. I've done it before.

op if you can, demo a set of wailer 112rps. I lay mine over and rip groomers every day on them and have never had the slightest doubt in their edge hold. they have a 16m radius and tapered tips and tails so they can rail in just about every condition without feeling hooky or sketch. and they're poppy as fuck so you can load them up and fly out of turns.

i have gotamas, likely upgrading to shiros, stiff for pow skis yes, fucking useless on groomers coz of full rocker, u can kinda rail em but forget anbout carving (its full rocker! its already bent!) still, who buys pow skis and cares about groomer performance?

My new kung fujas can destroy anything. 100 waist is wide enough to handle the pow and still rail the groomers.

They are damn floppy though, so they are definitely not crudbusters. If you like a ton of flex like i do, this is not really a problem though. just go butter on everything

CAYLORCAYLORCAYLORCAYLOR. everyone needs to give this ski a try. can float the deepest pow and absolutely slay the mountain when theres no fresh snow. i have a hard time bringing out any of my other skis because this ski is so much fun.

a 184 2011-2012 sir francis bacon can easily float 180-190lbs in decently light pow, I can attest to it, and they can rail groomers.

caylor for wider, jeffrey for a bit narrower.  I have the jeffrey's and they rip on ice/hardpack (on eastcoast) but they are more for 8" and under.  So if you want a wider ski, go caylor.

The jeffrey is just a blend of the jeronimo and caylor.  It's the caylor's little brother.

+1 for Caylors. I have our entire line at my disposal, I still ski that more often than not everyday, I only size up to Pillowfights if its deep.

If you have not tried this ski yet, where do we need to drive it out to for a demo day this season?

All the feedback is appreciated... I can't believe I've been neglecting newschoolers for so long...
you guys can sometimes actually be pretty helpful..
But just for an update... I got the Opus's.

sir francis bacon or prophet series both shred groomers

on3p's are fun on groomers but imo that's their only shortcoming based on the ones i've tried so far, something's always just a little bit off for railing gs turns, but outside of groomers they're hands down the best for everything

you can carve any ski, so be more specific. i've carved duck mounted pontoons
