The link at the bottom is a tough read, but it definitely paints a picture we should all see and understand.  Too many people treat their dogs- man's best fkn friend and the only source of unconditional love I know of- like a handbag that's out of season or an inconvenience once the reality of the responsibility sinks in and it's fucked up. 

I wish this woman got her way and dumbass people who drop their dogs off at a shelter like it's doggie daycare had to step up and help kill their pet- to actually understand and see with their own eyes the gravity of their actions or lack thereof.  Maybe if people had to hold down their dog while it struggled and somebody else shot it up with poison they'd think twice about giving up on their responsibilities to such beautiful animals.  Anyways, figured I'd throw this in here, as once you all know what a metro-area shelter is like, you can let others know.  IMO, everyone who owns a dog should know this stuff.

i adopted both of my cats and my dog as well :)

seriously though that article made me cry. my father had to put my last dog down and ill still tear up when i think about it. they become a HUGE part of your family so much so that i could never imagine doing anything like dropping them off at a shelter because they became too much for me to handle, ate 3 pairs of expensive heels, a leather cushion from a new chair, 4 pairs of thongs or a limited edition pair of sox sneakers

i waited almost 6 years after my last dog to get another. i did it when i felt the time was right, i was responsible enough to care for it all of the time because its def not like a cat where you can leave it home for 2-3 days and not worry about it. dogs are a shit ton of work but i love mine to death. i can have the shittiest fucking day at work but when i get home and that giant beast comes barreling at me with her tongue hanging out and tail whipping around, it melts my heart like you wouldnt believe.

how could you not love that face?

heres another of the beast with her sister from another mother. these two are fuckin hellions together and ashley can attest to that. lily is also a total creeper and just stares at you forrreeevvvveeerrrrr

You don't want my jaded opinion on this issue trust me.

I'll pose a question though that is sure to make my karma dive faster than an italian soccer star.

If the injection is so expensive, and unavoidable, and painful for the animal. What happened to the old days when they used to use bullets?? I mean honestly now, if you could save thousands on medicine for death, couldn't you potentially house and keep more animals?? Is lethal injection really better for the animal or just for the human facilitating the death.

Dead serious, not trying to be an ass.

I realize these are young animals and not an old yeller situation, but if you must kill them anyway????

I loaned my rifle to my buddy a few years ago to kill his own old dog. Everyone we mentioned it to said he was a savage. I actually thought it was beautiful. No not the thought of shooting a dog in the head, but the seeing of his best friends life right up to the very end at his own hands.

i adopted a really big golden retreiever, like 85 pounds the thing was huge, but it took dumps all over the place and peed everywhere and acted like a gigantic puppy, so i had to give him back cuz i didnt have the time to train him.

I had to personally put a cat down a few years ago and I was in the room when it was done.

If I ever need to do that again, Im calling you and you're coming up to assist in this because theres no way in hell I could do that again.

ive been checkin the local shelter websites daily, im lookin for a coonhound, and it kills me that i cant just bring home all the dogs. :/

Unfortunately though I've heard in many states it is illegal to put down your own animal. I don't know that for fact though.

I would have no problem helping you with that. Not because I'm demented in some way, but I find it hard to believe that lethal injection is any more instant and painless than a .45 to the back of the head. Hell if I was sentenced to death and had a choice I would pick the bullet for myself.

Seems like a big catch 22 kind of situation. make stiffer screening so responsible people are allowed to own pets, well then less people will be adopting from shelters. Make it illegal to put down your own animal, now shelters are overcrowded and basically deathcamps for pets.

Hit me up if you need me, we've got plenty of land in upstate pa to give an animal a peaceful end and proper burial.

Yes i love dogs.

Meet Lucy, we found her on the side of the road in a box back in 2001, and have had her ever since. she was a puppy when we got her, she is 12 on halloween.

PASS, I actually do agree with you. I don't feel it's humane in the way it's done from this description, and in many ways a fkn sledgehamer would be better. I grew up on a big ass farm and there was plenty of slaughtering done- quickly and quietly- so I do understand that sometimes things need to die, but also there's a right and a wrong way to do it.

Charmander it's funny you say that, one of my best friends shattered his leg a while back and had an external fixator holding his leg together with pins and such. During his recovery his 17 year old dog dies and he was crushed. Right after he got his fixator taken out, he went to the shelter and wouldn't you know it- there's a Plotthound sitting there with a damn external fixator in his leg from getting hit by a car! He couldn't take him home until the leg was better, but he locked it in the second he saw him- its like it was a sign. They are seriously best buds now and we have gone on so many tours together and he loves it- total pow hound... Here he is ripping some BC in the Notch with me last season, getting all up in the pow spray for some doggie face shots. Moral of the story: Awesome choice in dogs man, just plan on running him A TON :)

Worked at a dog shelter since '08, thank god it was no-kill, but we got all of our dogs off the euthanasia lists at kill shelters. Its fucked up, the reasons that some of these dogs were going to be euthanized for, or showed up at the shelter for. Ended up adopting three over these past few years, best dogs I've ever had

So my brother's girlfriend got mauled by a dog (healthy, disease-free) an was sent to the hospital for surgery, and a bunch of nice folks gathered up and protested against killing the dog, just worshiping the thing. So it almost killed her but they couldn't care less, cause it's so darn CUTE. I'll show you putting down an animal

i do fostering for cats mainly, because we have more space for them, than big dogs, since i have two chihuahuas, and most rescues won't allowed a third dog in foster care, unless they're desperate. any how, since i started fostering two years ago, it really opened my eyes. rescues spend their time and money rehabilitating abandoned animals. it's really sad and i wish people would wake up. i don't know how anyone could ever get rid of a dog, let alone a dog they call sweet, and possibly named since it was 2 months old, watched it grow, learned his quirks, etc. not to mention dogs are generally expensive when you buy them. how could you throw away 500-1000$ dollars so easily? you don't have time? you can't train him, you're going to have kids!? mind boggling. one of the rescues i follow recently found a pitbull puppy in a field nearly starved to death. there are thousands of ridiculous, tragic, miserable stories out there, and it's to a point where it just needs to stop. it's not because i'm trying to humanize animals, it's because dogs and cats are literally treated like garbage, and it's just plain unnecessary.

if you ever, want to help, foster. the pet isn't permanent, but you can take part in helping that dog or cat, find a new life. all you have to do is feed it, and take care of it, until it finds a new home. the majority of foster animals come from the pound, because a rescue saves them from death.

if you want a new pet, consider adopting. and make sure you ALWAYS research the type of pet you are adopting, down until breed specific behavioral issues, that way, when the bumpy road comes, you know what to expect and exactly how to handle it.

the whole reason i want a hound is so i can take him out and do badass stuff. i have a blue heeler with congestive heart failure and an australian shepherd thats his buddy, so im pretty much with out an adventure buddy right now

yeah that dog is badass looking man.

i took mine skiing a few times with me for some earn your turns and it was one of the best days ive ever had. to start skiing switch and see her attempting to eat the snow that rooster tailed from the skis was beyond epic.

My brother and his wife just adopted a Pit mix, hands down the sweetest, most lovable dog.

Made my wife and I decide we wanted to adopt a dog. We've been browsing. We have our eye on a 1-2 year old Husky mix that sounds like she might be a great mix. Good with kids, other dogs, and cats, which is a positive since we have 2 cats (both adopted as kittens - they will likely be pissed at first, haha), and will move into the kids realm at some point as well.

Hoping to get some more information on her and maybe arrange a home visit!

i shot and killed a rabid dog... was not hard for me
i was staying at a farm and no body wanted to shoot it cause they knew the dog well.
so they payed me 50 bucks. and i looked at it as the fact the dog is suffering an a threat to others.
so i got a 30 30. and got him between the eyes. he went down fast.
and that is one of the few things i have ever shot and not ate

i did once hit a dog with my car. it was dark and it darted out and it bounced of the front..felt bad when i told the family he lived though broken front leg..


now cats... fuck.. i could not do that. i would have a hard time shooting a cougar unless it was trying to kill me.
