also, if you're man enough to use your mommy and daddy's ITunes account, you should be man enough to ask for their credit card and just order the DVD instead of coming on here and bitching

Disclaimer: only read like first two posts. Study after study has shown that reduced cost or free downloadable copies of music/movies/books increase sales of physical copies if they have any effect at all. itunes and other digital sources don't have an impact on total sales.

Look at it this way , i bought every single ski movie that was available on itunes last season. So everyone got a chunk. So did itunes i know , i know. As previously stated most funding is from sponsors and a tiny part is from sales ( same as mags). Digi downloads make it possible to see everyfilm for a fraction of the cost. streaming these movie for free upsets me however. Don't rip on digi dls , they all get a chunk this way and then we get more variety . Shit i even bought art of flight , fucking slooowwwboarding

this kid have any idea how many more people purchase these movies because there on itunes? alot of people get itunes gift cards and just blow them on ski movies. there is plenty of money to be made.

Well since flashkick got things off his chest I'll get this off my chest.

1. Itunes is strictly for bitches.
2. Production companies don't have to use iTunes, they can host it themselves and sell downloads for $12-15 and make nearly 100% profit.
3. DVD sales are dead. Do you guys honestly still buy DVDs? Why don't they fucking release that shit on VHS while they are at it. They have to sell the DVD at a discount to retailers and distributors, pay to have it mastered, and pay to press it. I'd be stunned if they even make $10/dvd sale

TLDR: Any prod company not making more money on digital sales is fucking shit up royally.

I don't even know what the post is that I'm replying too, just wanted to respond to the general idea of what Flashkick is saying...

What is better for a ski movie company? For fewer people to buy their DVD, because a lot of people cannot afford it, or for a lot of people to buy it off of itunes?

Sorry, but after Art of Flight released day 1 on iTunes for $10, it's not longer justifiable to charge $30 + shipping for a ski/snowboard movie.

If you don't like iTunes business model, there are other (cheap) options to self-publish an h264 encoded file and charge $10-15 for it.

I have a big collection I've built over the last 8-9 years and while it is nice to have them on a book shelf to look at, I end up ripping them to the computer as it is easier to watch them (and be able to skip the stupid warnings/menus etc).

idk about you guys, but I sure hope companies don't stop making DVDs anytime soon. Theres just something cooler to me about having an actual hard copy of a movie that I can watch on a big screen. Also my computer is too old to download from itunes.

Day 1 digital distribution also reduces piracy significantly as people who want the movie "now" have an option to buy it for immediate gratification (as the pirated copy will not yet be released for something niche like action sports movies -- there is a delay of a few days before they show up on torrent sites).

If you rely purely on DVD, which can take weeks for all copies to be shipped, more people will pirate.

It's wrong, but it's the reality of the market today. Don't fight it.

itunes doesn't take 50% man, you're making up statisics.. i've sold thousands of songs on itunes at 99 cents and i get 88 cents of every sale..

I've never bought a hard copy of a movie. Yes I have a job and yes I buy my own shit but I can't justify spending $30 on a movie. Now that they're on iTunes I've bought at least 10 movies. Most were from gift cards but the ski companies are still making the same money.

Something is better than nothing.

The DVDs are currently in the final steps of production and are being sent back to us within the next couple of days. We will have them out the door once we get them back from the factory. Thanks for the patience.

This is my life. For all skiing. Do odd jobs, like sweeping dust off walls so people can paint them like $5 an hour but still good easy pay.

I do websites for small business's $250 flat rate + $30 everytime i update the site.

make a lot of money.


The other day, my dads friend needed someone to spot weld 30 precast landings for a stairwell in a new hotel. I went over, made $200 for like 9 hours of work.



You can make the money dude and don't say you can't, because i'm sure you're legs aren't broken or you're mentally ill.

people should buy hard copies for the same reason you'd buy one of a really good album,because you want the physical satisfaction and connection to the object. It has nothing to do with money. When you factor in the cost of DVD production shipping, and promotion, it ends up being much cheaper to just release something online, otherwise, no one would release anything online. Add to that, the arbitrary purchases made on itunes, and the free marketing you'll no doubt receive from it, and you might actually save some money. All that buying a DVD, or CD, or vinyl is, is a self-indulgence, not necessarily a bad one, but one no less, because it separates you, (the cool person who actually cares), from the people who don't get it. Get it?
