NS help me pick a car.

alright so here is the deal. Im currently a junior and i live in north tahoe. So awd is a must with that in mind i have a price range around $8000. Im a fan of subaru(like most of ns) but i honestly cant pick one right now. I defiantly want a stick. Preferably under 130,000

SO what would you go for a 02-03 Subaru Wrx Wagon (w/ slight mods)
or
93-99 Lifted Toyota 4Runner SR5 (off road package)

i'd say get a wrx if you're willing to do some work on it and have money coming in for some repairs. because things will probably end up breaking/needing replaced if you are looking at a 10 yr old car. and even more so if you plan on modding it, if you can find one that isn't already modded. get a compression test.

buy the wrx buy a stock one that has already had the timing belt done. do any mods urself. with a car that has 100ish k on it you should buy one that was driven by an older person that doesnt drive it like you will. that is all

An 02-03 WRX with 'mods' is a timebomb waiting to explode. mods generally means the previous owner drove the car like it's meant to be driven, which means things will be worn out. as someone said, compression test it to make sure there's no leaks in the block/head gaskets. check the clutch and transmission to make sure there's not abuse from launching it. honestly, i think you'd be better off in the 4runner. 4wd with a locking diff is going to beat AWD with an open diff in deep snow any day, and the 4runner has more ground clearance as well. if you're looking to get to the mountain when there's more than 6" of snow on the ground, you're going to be waiting for the plows with the subi. i'm not saying this to rag on the impreza at all; I own one, but I live in PA, not tahoe. we don't get snow feet at a time like you do.

a wrx will most likely not be super reliable, especially with mods. for a good awd car id look at something like an audi 90 or any audi before 2000 basically. depending on the model it could be extremely reliable, and audi's have a superior awd system. if you want something faster look at the first gen s4's and s6. it may not have the 0-60 numbers of a wrx but i guarantee they have a much better and more useable powerband, wrx's are not that fast. plus they understeer like crazy.

but if your set on a wrx or 4 runner id go with a 4 runner.
id look at an 80 series land cruiser too if your looking for a good toyota suv around 8 grand. those things are better than pretty much anything else offroad for under 10 grand.

Yes make sure it is Adult owned. And prepare to drop money in it for clutches and gaskets because I am sure that a junior in high school will beat the piss out of his car. Especially a skier with a subi. Go with the yoder. It's bigger so you can get more people and shit in there and like said score it is higher which will help if you want to go to the mountain when it is dumping

WHY are those your only 2 choices?

Start surfing craigslist for more reasonable deals on older subis, preferably those owned by grandmas... then save the money you didn't spend to maintain/repair the car.. because it WILL need repairs sometime in the future.

But, between those 2, I would probably pick the 4runner unless your commute is extremely long *gas mileage*... 4runners are very dependable and can drive you anywhere

Don't buy a modded WRX. Odds are, if it was modded, it was driven hard, and you'll have to replace parts. Why are you limiting yourself to just those two cars? There are far better cars out there for the price than an '03 WRX. You don't have to jump on the bandwagon just because all the NS kids cream themselves over the sound of the "boxer rumble"

Get a VW R32. I just got a 2008 one and love it and i hear the 2004 is just as great. look into a 2004 R32, u won't be disappointed

OP, we have a 94 4runner, and its a pretty nice car, its pretty slow and stuff but pulls in like 18 mpg, which imo is pretty damn good. its comfortable, it holds alot of shit, i dunno id take it over a scoob anyday

Im gonna have to disagree, ive seen a stock 80 series do some insane things. just a couple months ago my friends stock 80 was leading a pack of 4 other cars, 2 wranglers, a cherokee, and an fj40. both wranglers were pretty heavily modded, one had almost 10 k into it. anyway, we got to an obstacle, the 80 did it first try, the first wrangler tried 4 or 5 times, gave up and winched itself up, the second wrangler tried a couple times then flipped, the cherokee and 40 didnt even try it.

for a stock daily driverable SUV, im gonna go ahead and say the 80 is the best and most capable you can buy for under 10k.

my choicewould be a 4 runner. i live in denverish area and we get snow ice and other things that thing is beast 4 of my friends have one 2 olden then the one your looking at the wrx is such a dope care... but mods? that thing is going to be driven like t was meant to and truthfully i wouldnt trust that. its just me plus you cant put the seats down in the booo boo and fuck bitches

surprising how many threads there are on a site with so many children.

Both excellent choices, wrx is sick and my I love 4runners as well. I would go with the 4runner tho just because older subbies have engine problems so if it hasnt yet it could be on the way. 4runner will be low maintain and can otherwise do everything the subie can.

4 runner + sandbags in the back to keep your tail down. honestly I have driven trucks my whole life and they are far more practical for almost anything that requires storage (skis + friends) And with the extra clearance you can get into places most cars cant.

Rwd cars aren't as bad in the snow as people say, *although I will say in an FR car, it is harder than other cars to get traction accelerating from a stop, especially uphill* the reason people say that rwd sucks is because most drivers are terrible and immediately panic when they get oversteer. Clearance obviously isn't great, but the miata is a VERY well balanced car and is fine in any weather condition in the hands of a non-ritard driver (note, the driver in the video is on high performance summer tires... think what he could have done with some m/s tires). Also, people constantly forget, drive wheels become irrelevant in terms of braking/cornering (although the weight distribution can have an impact on traction)

4 runners usually have pussy magnets in them stock but you can find one aftermarket for a pretty reasonable price.

After a lot of convincing, (I had a shitty 21rst birthday) I got the thumbs-up to cop a new whip for my 22nd and decided to go with a 9-7x 4.2i...... Every other kid has a bmw X5 or suburu... Literally no one has this car, and I love that. I have had people come up to curious, asking what it was and saying they have never seen it before. It's been nearly a year since I got it now and I can't complain, I still love it. Of course, it sucks driving it in the city but that's a given.

Pros: - Drives beautifully and handles nimbly, can dodge construction cones, college students, potholes like a baller.
- Handles snow/ice/winter conditions AMAZING, the double traction control system is ridiculous. I've took the wrong turn on the way to find ski spots, ended up going down completely 'undriveable' roads, with 3 feet of snow and basically a mogul run.... and powered through it all safely. Same thing with slipping on the highway or at higher speeds, shit literally throws u back onto the road.

- all the premium features, bose, onstar, bluetooth, sexy beige soft leather, seperate climate control systems etc (didnt get dvd/navi screens yet, will get installed separately... was too expensive, already very generous gift)
- all chrome massive 18" rims

- perfect space seats go down and turns into a luxury tent, easy to fuck in the rare occasion that shit happens high school style

- the thing most stoked on: fucking 20 foot electronic highpressure air "hose" hidden in the back where you blow up anything from Kiddie Pools to your tires, to idk a raft ?

Cons: - Electronic system prone to issues here and there
- MPG sucks balls.... rapes your wallet. computer tells me I've already pumped away far over $1,200 away into the 20gallon tank.... in the city I get around 10-13, on the highway its much better at around 19, but thats still not good.
- special paint keeps it looking dope and turns heads, even when its not that clean , but scratches really easily
- expensive to repair, even under warrantee

Overall, if you want an SUV that not everyone else has, and is sick for skiing and is a perfect mix of Luxury and 'rugged' life... thats it.

no, it actually happened in a low class housing project at night. i moved it to that spot cause i was embarrassed.

i forgot that 95% of the exploded population of people on this site are now at a mean age of 14 and cant actually legally drive
