my friend doesn't think snowboarding/skiing is a sport but I disagree. what do you guys think?

imho skiing can be a whole lot of things....

totally depends on what you make of it though, but seriously skiing is in the olympics with several disciplines, how could it not be a sport then ?!

There are skiing competitions.
Professional skiers train to improve.
Athletes are paid money to ski.

These days people consider pretty much anything a sport, ie. Poker, Gaming, and even sometimes Snowboarding. As not to offend those who participate in their beloved sports, the same way Adolph's friend has offended some of you guys, I have learned to broaden my personal interpretation of sport to any activity that thrives on competition, rewards hard work, and relies on any sort of skill.

So if you and your work buddies want to train towards being the best burger makers this side of 4th street has ever seen, and then have a tournament at the end of the week, by all means, call it a sport. Just don't expect me to buy your crews season edit.

Its more of a sport than football, which is gay. Football, baseball and many other atheletes make millions of dollars a year, which is why they play. Skiers make so much less than that, they'll make enough to eat and their sponsors fly them places. SKiers do it cause they enjoy it and not for money, which makes it the best sport with people who care about progressing it.

curling actually does require a lot of skill. you gotta know how to throw that thing perfectly, and how to perfectly sweep, which is also a good workout.

Balllroom dancing? Though it may not be in the Summer Olympics anymore. That sure as shit is NOT a sport.

Skiing is definitely a sport, albeit not a team sport. There is plenty of training both physically and mentally that goes into competitive (not even top tier) skiing. Show your friend footage of some Alaska lines and ask them how THAT isn't a sport.

i agree with this. your friend is actually complimenting you. by calling it a sport you are limiting it. it is so much more than that.  this may sound gay (it does) but there is a soul and passion behind skiing---and yes snowboarding--- that most sports cant give you. most sports are confined to a rink, court, field, ect. look at our playing field. we have it madeeee

I define sports as a game that takes extreme athleticism to compete in and there is an objective winner. But then again i dont think 80% of the contests in the olympics are sports either. They are contests, and races, not sports.


skiing is the same as figure skating...its an art that is judged on style and technicality. Or it is just a race. If you arent competeing, then it sure as hell isnt a sport.

I get what your saying but I disagree. It is completley a sport. just not the same kind of sport as football or something like that. it would be more of a lifestyle sport. but then again you have to be somewhat athletic I mean some 300lb dude cant go out and do some double cork 12's

Well I think you have to divide it kinda. If someone would just go skiing like once a winter (poor guy), and just does it for having fun those few days, I wouldn't consider it a sport for him/her (especially the people that tend to go on the slopes at 9-10 am, go to the lodge for 1-2 hours and then go skiing for 2 hours again). But if you ski (like most of us here I guess), I would definetly consider it a sport, since we are mostly doing it for like 8 hours (or more) a day. And if you just ride down a nice and long line, you will be exhausted and everything, so then I would consider it a sport definetly!

It also a lifestyle, art or whatever nice things you all said ^^
