Window tint delema

Fist of all I live in NY where 705 tint is legal but in my smallish town cops have better things to worry about. I have a 2002 Pontiac sunfire and was looking into ordering some precut tint online for the side and rear windows from snap tint. The only problem is putting tint on the inside of the rear windshield will be near impossible due to lack of space between it and the speaker rack thingy. Could i just put it on the exterior or will the tint decay and become ruined? Does exterior tint even exist? Any tips for putting it on the inside would be great.  Oh and any advice or stories about tint in NY would be great too. Thanks!

^...but if you go through with it i wouldnt recommend putting it on the outside. i dont know much, but i'm pretty sure it would deteriorate especially if water gets in there and freezes

Just take it to be done professionally somewhere... don't put tint on the outside... it wouldn't last 5 minutes - first rain and it would be off!

Trav is right - a good tint job will cost about 400 sheets - for quality ceramic tint...

If you live in a very hot part of the country, it's worth it..... but even a reasonable tint job will cost 200 for all windows.

this. I did my rear windows myself and they look terrible. from 5 feet away it looks fine but any closer and you can see where dirt got under the film. get it done professionally or not at all.

Get it done professionally. It looks like shit if you do it yourself, it will bubble and peel.

i am a big fan of do it urself projects...this is one where you will end up having a professional do it anyway. it requires tools and skills just let a shop do it. its usually 35-50 per window so you are talking 150 max which is a good value. it will look like shit if you do it urself. i promise

Thank you. Idk wtf that dudes prob is. Chill a bit. And I have some practice doing it myself. I got cheap tint, tried and failed but it was because it was cheap tint.

your car is a deprecating asset. why would you put any money into it if its just going to lose value?
i honestly was thinking of doing so many things to my car, but srsly just step back and think. do i really NEED tinted windows? no. when have you even thought.. "if i only had tinted windows.." never.
dont do it, if you want to do something to your car to make it nice. clean it.

haha. This car is my first car. I'm a college kid. You little rich kids get over it. I'm not driving a freaking camero here. Lets see your first car your parents didn't buy. And it looks pretty good actually. Black hubs, blacked out lights and a cheapy hood scope that look decent.

but yes, I wouldn't do it yourself and definitely not on the outside.  It will bubble and peel and crack and aside from not looking good it will be downright dangerous.

a cop told my friend. if i can see you well enough to determine if you have your seatbelt on, if you have a drink in your hand and if i think you can see out well enough then im fine with the level of tint. but if it is too dark for me to do my job then im giving you with a ticket.

For the love of god, please don't do your own tint. It cost like 40 bucks more to have it installed for you, so worth it.

Wow, you really think $40 tint is going to look good? Save up the 200 bucks, it will be worth it. Shitty purple tint that is installed by some kid is gonna look like shit.

Oh and go for professionally installed tints. Otherwise they'll look terrible with any dirt left under them. Plus most shops guarantee their work for life, so if it cracks or bubbles they'll replace it.

pre cut and all that other shit is not a good quality at all, you need to take a trip to advanced auto or walmart and buy you some 5% or 20% tint rolls and read on line or in the instruction on how to do it like i did on my jeep.
i did 20% all around 35% windshield with a 12in 5% tint strip.

NOTE:most states regulations are 35% only on driver and passenger passed that can be as dark as you want unless its a back windshield on a car its gotta be 35% no windshield tint aloud and you cant go past your A1 line or 5in down your windshield also 35% tint.
when i say 35% its the 35% visibility out of 100%.

Hard to tell due to the mud but it might give you a idea im about to throw 5% over my 20% sides

I got tint from advanced auto and I couldn't make it fir no matter what. The windows curved so wrinkle type bubbles formed and I couldn't get em out so I figured precut may fix this problem

If under 30% in rear, then no tint allowed in front is the Chicago law and he got nailed for it.

did you heat form it first using a heat gun and the outside of the rear window to achieve the curvature?

Window tinting is very hard to do and do well..... it's so worth taking it to a shop - then if it get's fucked, it's not your fault - most places will guarantee the tint job for years.

yeah my windshield was a bitch the reason i did my drivers and passenger side 20 was cause it came stock with the backs 20 but you just have to take your time and use alot of solution and never crease it you could even look up how to do it in strips and meet the strips at your defrost line so it looks clean

who gives a shit what he drives? some of you kids are such fucking pricks on here. Anyways you CAN put tint on the outside of a window. I personally have tinted plenty of windows and work in a shop that does tint. Its not recommended but you can do it and it will hold up. My friend was in the same deliemma you are in and didnt have the funds to take it to a shop, so we tinted on the outside on the back glass and its been fine for over a year now. But if you can I would save save save and have it done professionally. But if you cant, go for it, youll be fine.

its 35% i see fine and i never have to wear sun glasses no glare and no high beam glare at night ive got hid lights so visibility at night is prime

Heat shrinkage helps eliminate bubbles and wrinkles that might occur in the film. A blow drier would work, not as effective a heat shrink gun, but still it would work. If I were you I would go to Advance Auto Parts or what ever auto parts store is around you, and buy a tint kit. Those kits include squeegees, film cards, and tint spray (soapy water). That will help the process.
