^ the only mac i would considering buying is the 27" imac and i need a laptop for school not to mention i seriously lack required funds to buy a mac other than the air wihich isnt a bad computer at all however i feel it would fall short in the performance category that i need for my ap computer science class

Are you going to be moving it around a lot? because 17"laptops are a total bitch just so you know. So if you just want a new computer but don't care to move it around get a desktop, if not then get 15" max.

Computers fine, the anti-virus software that you will need to run for it is what's going to make your balls bleed. That computer will be running at 20% battery and speed in a year and a half because your anti-virus program will drain your shit fast. That, is why you get a mac, because in the long run it won't break down on you.

maybe if you get some shit like norton or mcafee. Speaking of which why do they sell a macintosh version of those if you don't get viruses? Oh yeah, because you do, they just exist in lower numbers because a hacker would rather infect a large corporation than a group of kids in starbucks (yes, I feel like stereotyping today, sorry).

ya i will be taking to class every other day  for my computer science class i might considering a 15" one if i could find one with the same specs in the same price range if you know of one plese post the link cause i would pefer 15" but don't want to go any smaller just cant stand small screens. i was planing on getting a desktop before i found out that the computers the school supplies for the class are super laggy because we have to run java through a virtual machine that makes us an amistrator but keeps the main network safe from us messing shit up

completly agree viruses will never be part of my decision because i ran my pc with virus protection for a year and half (my subscription that came with the computer finally ran out)  then i got a virus downloaded avast(free protection) and the virus was gone virus are a thing of the past for personal computers.

To be honest I don't really know the specs of a laptop that you would need for a computer science class. 8 gb seems a little over kill for a laptop. Anything in that price range with a 15" screen is going to be comparable none the less. Oh and try to find a deal online for a laptop that futureshop carries since you can price match it and save some money( if they say that it has to be a canadian site just argue with them about the exchange rate and they should give it to you).

k so i bought the computer so let this thread die and i agree there awesome little computers for everday computing but i need to use mine for programing, autocad, photoshop, and possibly maya so i feel it simply doesnt have a enough power to run those programs quickly

I've had my laptop for well over 3 years now; never once had anti-virus anything installed on it, never once have gotten a virus, computer runs absolutely fine still. It's an HP. It cost 1/2 what a mac with the same specs would cost. Not trying to open any argument, just pointing out that your statement isn't the truth.

You should buy a laptop for durability and battery life. It is a lot more worth it to build your own rig if you want performance. Macs may be easy to use but OSX is completely useless for doing anything substantial, they are pretty much $2000 facebook machines.

Do you actually want to be like this guy??

that computer will do fine for what you want it to do. The amd apu 8 series is close to what the i5 offers with different architecture on the chip. While it wont preform the same as say a quad i5 its going to have the same preformance of the i5 550 (i think, its late)  and shouldnt  have a problem doing anything you want it to do.

If you can figure the programs you listed out, im 100% sure you can figure out how to get rid of all the software that comes loaded on that aswell as best buys software. Just get rid of that stuff see a 3-9% hardware load drop and you'll be in the clear.

i built my own. and honestly i can say that it has never given me major problems that i couldnt fix. its cheaper (for the level of hardware that you could put in) not only in the short term, but in the long term as well for some parts are able to carry over into newer systems without a major hitch. there are plenty of guides out there that will help you, the only thing that is a pain in the ass is the placement of the pins but even then its just matching the labels on the motherboard map. plus, cutoms look way cooler with all of the lights and shit you can put in them.

i just got an Asus, its so fucking sick and was under 1000 before taxes and the software i bought with it etc etc

but yeah man 8GB ram and 1TB harddrive, kicks a macs ass spec-wise

If your looking to use Maya on the laptop then you will want a good quad core CPU somthing like an i72600 would be good. Ram and graphics are less inportant in maya, but 6gig is a minium. In photoshop ram is definatly going to be usefull. 12 would be awsome. If youplan to use After effects its recomeded you have 4gig a core so 16gig would be ideal, or really 32 if your CPU has hyperthreading but you could get away with less. Dont consider a mac unless money is no object. They are now the same as windows laptops as they are using the same intel architechure, so all you get over a windows laptop is a shiny apple. A good fast SSD would be nice and get a good big external drive to use as storage. The graphics card is only really used for games so you can save some money there. Size wise 17inch is ok for maya, 15inch is hard to work on. Maybe get a 13inch for full portability and cheap price and get a nice big screan for when you work on the laptop at home.

the 2600 wouldnt be a very good choice for a laptop. a lot of its pricetag is the fact that it is unlocked, and you dont want to be overclocking in a laptop if you want your computer to last very long.

I love apple. their products lack in some areas but the simplicity of their operation systems is just so satisfying, i would choose a macbook over a better-performing pc any day

eclipse doesn't hardly take any power to run. Maya can also be run without having a power house computer. Rending in maya on the other hand... you'd probably be better off renting a server farm from Google than trying to buy a computer that could render fast in maya. Especially if you plan on using mental ray.

Your 404 is not found, but I got an hp pavilion dv6t quad for 1200 and it's pretty sick. It's got a quad core i7, 8 gigs of ram, 15" 1080p anti-glare screen, 2 gig ddr5 video card, blu-ray player. Handles eclipse wonderfully in ubuntu, just started programming though, so I don't really know what I'm talking about
