College Ideas?

Ivy League or nothing.. duh.

truth. after a certain point, grades mean next to nothing. it's all about who you are, where you come from, what you offer, financial background, etc. they don't want a bunch of smart rich white kids.


now more than ever, schools are putting diversity over academics. having gone to a small private school where there was a TON of pressure on kids to go to ivy leagues or other good schools, i saw a lot of kids get rejected by some schools they should have gotten into, and i saw lots of kids get into schools they shouldn't have. for example, our class valedictorian went to Oxford, but got rejected by a bunch of ivy leagues, even though his gpa was perfect, his test scores were unreal, and he took a shit ton of APs. My guess is that it's because he was so focused on academics throughout high school, he didn't do anything else. So frankly, he was a boring person. and schools want interesting, creative people more than traditionally smart but boring people.


so my point is, don't worry so much about what schools your grades will 'allow' you to get into. expect to get rejected by schools you should have gotten into. and apply to schools you think you won't have any chance of getting into. if you emphasize why you're interesting and what you can bring to the school aside from intelligence, you might be surprised how easy it is to get into colleges.

At ivy's and other high level schools, there are so many qualified applicants that it's literally only luck. I know that at Stanford they said that if they rejected all the 2200 kids they accept every year they would still have 3 classes that were just as qualified. Sometimes people get really lucky and sometimes they get screwed over. There's only so much you can do to be the best applicant possible but from there it's out of your control. So just try hard on your applications and good luck

Yup, shit happens. But definitely go to school, if you make something good out of you're college experience you'll be able to get a job in something you like or continue with school easily.

with those grades why are you asking NS about a huge life choice like that??

cause not everyone on NS did poorly in HS?

hey I'm in a similar situation and I'm a senior. I've been doing alot of research lately and lots of reading and I'll give you a couple starting points:
Debt Free U is a great book, you should probably read it, it's on amazon for really cheap'
collegeprowler.com and the college board website are great places to get started for learning about individual colleges.
Keep in mind you shouldn't let anyone else choose a college or major for you, it's a big decision that will effect the rest of your life

Here are some colleges I WANT to go to, if I could get in. But the avg. gpas of the admitted are higher than mine. So i'm just wondering how much GPA matters and how far would it be able to stretch if I had good extra-curriculars and such.

Just apply.Yes GPA's are crucial but scores and extracurriculars also factor in. The worst they say is no and best case scenario you go to the school of your dreams.
