College Ideas?

I have a GPA of 3.55 and my PLAN test predicted that I get at least a 29 on the ACT, but I'm hoping I get a 30, so i was just wondering of some colleges that could I could get into that are good for those criteria. Thanks for the help

don't want to sound like a bitch, but you should consider picking up a college book. they put out update editions every year and you can get them at any major bookstore. they basically tell you what scores/gpa's every college accepts and what programs they offer.  this is what i did when I was looking at schools for the first time, I think US News puts out a book and maybe the Princeton review, but I am not totally sure (i havent looked at one in years).  pick one of these up, it will really help you out. :)

save shit tons of money: co to a CC for two years, ball the fuck out in the classes(cause theyre easier than real college) then transfer to a really, really good school that you currently have no chance of getting into.


Or just go to a state school...

the best advice i think is dont pick a college for the name. just because its somewhere nobody has heard of doesnt mean its an inferior school. in fact, you can get a much better education at a smaller school where the professor actually knows your name and cares about your success and you can have class discussions

That doesnt mean as much as youd think. I had roughly the same stats but a 32 on the ACT.

Extra Curriculars are super important. GET A LOT OF THOSE. and write a good essay. Be different.

Absolutely the best advice on here. I am community college bred, state school (about to be) degree'd, and hopefully headed to a decent or better med school. And through my various hustles and hard work, very very little debt so far (<10,000).

DO NOT PUT YOURSELF INTO MORE DEBT THAN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY! The way this world is heading is scary, no need to saddle yourself with debt that will take a career-span to pay off. Partying and scene are not as important as you think either.

While I agree, you can get this at a large school as well. I haven't been in an undergrad course in a long time, but it was always easy getting to know a professor. In college probably 95% of students never go in for office hours, or attempt to socialize with their professor outside of class time.

well where i go to school the plan test is taken in 10th grade, and really doesnt mean shit, nor do the acts really, if you want to go to a very prestigious school you better be involved in clubs and groups colleges love that, also the act scores have to be there but arent he most important.

i say go to a community college first and see if you like it, college isnt for some people and with this economy i think a trade is the best thing there are very little high paying jobs out there.

trade is a solid option in todays economy....

personally...if your not going ot have a lot of debt or pay for college, go to a 4 year school not CC. Check out forbes top 100 schools list or whatever it is that just came out. Any of those schools would be optimal.

FUCK I just typed out a really long reply twice but mobile ns is so retarded. Long story short, community college is a good option for some people but I wouldn't go around recommending it to everybody. Especially the way you worded it makes it sound like college isnt worth it and everyone Gould go to community college. If you can get into a good school/know you want a 4-year college, then don't waste your time with a JC

OP, what do you want to go to school for?

and to the person who said check out the top 100 schools, do NOT do this, for example if you want to be an engineer and work in the denver area then the school of the mines is a solid choice and so is CU for this area, taking that degree out of the state could have some issues since they are more highly thought of here, i think this is with many colleges in their state.

just my opinion though.

You probably have about a 50% chance of getting into to CU with your grades.  Better state schools like Michigan, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Virginia, UNC or Texas will be a stretch for you, but you should definitely look into them.  If you want a school you can defnitely get into, go to Utah.  Utah has great skiing and a respectable football team, and with your grades you should be able to get in fairly easily.

I'm a junior....i definitely should start thinking about colleges/ visiting them and I took the PLAN as a sophomore and am going to take the ACT in October, December and April

The extra-curriculars that I do are Soccer and Baseball, and Best Buddies (program to spend time with and help out special needs kids in my school). I'm also a member of the National Honor Society, is that good enough or more?

when i took my SAT's i scored like 200 points higher than my PLAN scores. If anything you ACT scores will go up.

What size school are you looking for? Small liberal arts college? Large public university? Potential Major/Academic interests? Cost? Region?

You have/project to have solid grades and scores, you should fare well in the admissions process; good luck!

I was confused when I said he has a 50% chance of getting into CU. The average GPA of acceptance to CU is 3.6, and CU has an acceptance rate of 84%. His chances of getting into CU are closer to 80%.

Oh, I'm sorry it must have just been a typo then. I guess he was aiming for the 'h' key but hit the 'o' instead, then he did the same thing with the 'a,' and then he missed the keyboard entirely for the 'v' and 'e.'

No I'm being serious. I actually think he knows the difference between 'have' and 'of,' and I trust that this error was just the cause of some inaccurate key-striking.


Also, somebody suggested the Colorado School of Mines. Their male to female ratio is 3:1. Still think the OP wants to go there?

its an alright school if you dont like girls and are serious about engineering... i visited and to me it seemed like 1/2 the kids there were there for serious education and the other 1/2 to be ski bums. and the coors brewery is right by it haha

Not a bad idea, but you had better do very, very well at that school, and be involved so you have some connections coming out.

Where your degree is from is only gonna help you get your first job(which is huge dont get me wrong), after that its how you perform out in the real world. No one cares that you got an engineering degree from MIT if the people you work for think you are a social retard, who does mediocre work.



Also, one of the biggest things that college is useful for(almost as important as the degree) is the the social education. You will learn to interact with all sorts of people in all sorts of situations. You will learn how to manage a social life with academic life, and how to combine the two(very similar to a workplace where you are with the same people for 9-10 hours out of the day).


Do you want a traditional college atmosphere, or a smaller more intimate atmosphere? What potential majors, or areas of academia are you interested in?
