i have no clue, but obviously huge. just to film with trice you gottta have a huge travel budget. gotta say, craziest fucking movie i have seen. those guys are animals. and they produced the best movie of just about  ever i would say

the budget would cover cameras, travel expenses, food, etc. It would also pay the salaries for the crew while they were working on the project so they could pay rent and such.


I heard a figure lower than that. In the millions, but not that high.

thats it thats all was under a million, curt morgan said so in some interview shortly after the movie came out. they just got mad hookups and rented most of their equipment back then.

a few different articles vary a bit, some say "reported OVER 2 million"

I was asking because I wondered if the cost of the helicopters were included in the movie budget, or if red bull already owned them, or they were just leasing/chartering them, etc... with the budget it seems like the cost of the helicopters is not included in the budget though... and I doubt anyone (or their insurance company) would let the film crew charter their helicopters to do stupid dangerous shit like that - from a liability standpoint

i dont know, not to take anything away from the movie, but it looked like a few of their trips were a bust but since these trips probably cost a shitload of $ they had to make a segment out of it, for example chile, or antartica where they skied one line. although riding there must be just insane.

10 million? No way.

What are the biggest expenses? Camera equip and heli's probably.

Camera's, lenses etc all that stuff is maybe 250.000-350.000$ And then they have the best gear on the market. Heli's are several thousand a day. You're not gonna get that high.
Anything over 2-3 million would amaze me tbh...

I could be terribly ignorant, but I don't think the camera equipment is close to the cost of the helicopters... but then again, there are costs that are a bit of both... ex. gyro stabilized camera mounts for the helicopters

Some of the shots in the movie are shot on Phantom High-speed cameras, and they are in the price range of 50k-150k USD for a complete line.. Add that to the fact that brain farm also use RED, Cineflex HD heli cams and varicam (feature film cameras widely used in hollywood)..

But yeah, helis are still pretty expensive :P

I'm almost sure this is true, but I think some super rich multi-millionaire like sponsored the film company and paid for most of it and insisted on getting the best of filming gear (phantom camera)

Red Bull heli's are usually part of a heli op. They just rent them out and wrap them with their graphics. They don't own them.

Red Bull and Quiksilver have obviously put a lot of money into the project. We need not forget, however, that Brain Farm is it's own production company. Brain, as we see it today, came into being after TITA with the help of an interested investor in exchange for a % of ownership in the company. Multi-million dollar camera setups do not materialize out of thin air, not even Red Bull air. And keep it mind that Brain Farm, as it's own production company, has many clients generating lots of revenue.

So in terms of budget, I'd pin the most expensive aspect of the film - their video production setup - as covered by Brain Farm themselves. And this makes sense. Travel, heli, ADVERTISING (rumored to well out do other production costs), etc. have likely been picked up by those major brand sponsors. At the very least advertisement will have been bankrolled by them. I'd also suspect that the brand sponsors helped out quite a bit with helis and such, however, I would not be surprised if a lot of this "came out of pocket," so to speak, as it does for other productions companies. Hard to say.

I know some of the riders have mentioned putting in quite a bit of money into being able to film for the project. This isn't Hollywood - riders don't get paid huge sums of money to go film. Rather, sponsors pay the riders for the kind of exposure that they are getting.

As to the overall budget, no idea. Since regular production companies typical budgets range in lower-mid hundreds of thousands, I'd guess you could expect, maybe, three to four times that. Read: several million dollars (excluding the endless advertising done by Red Bull).

As an aside, Morgan mentioned a few years back that TITA was done on a Mack Dawg budget (again, lower-mid hundreds of thousand) just stretched intelligently over two years. Some people have speculated the budget for The Art of Flight was around two million dollars. This figure seems like a misnomer. The video production equipment could probably quite easily meet and surpass that figure. But like I mentioned earlier, Brain Farm OWNS their equipment. They are not paying someone else to use. And again, the equipment was primarily bank rolled by an investor. So the 2-3 million dollar figure I keep seeing floating around probably relates to travel/heli time budgets. Advertising is another monster probably not factored into that figure. Actual PRODUCTION cost would be expected to come out of Brain Farms pocket and then recouped through sells, etc. (Just keep in mind production cost when you own and operate your own equipment is quite "cheap." How much does it cost you to go and GoPro your friend? Same idea applies).

There you have it, that is my best guess, through considerable speculation, and the fairly keep-up-with-itness of my daily interwebings, as to how The Art of Flight was paid for. But these cats are smart cookies, it's probably all cheaper than we think ;)

Red Bull DOES NOT"have" them. Brain Farm is it's own production company funded by it's own work and private investors. Therefore, budget from Red Bull for whatever and Production costs for Brain Farm itself are two different animals entirely.

However, the more I think about it the more I think the project was financed like this:
* Brain Farm is independent production company
* Travis rides for Red Bull
* Red Bull, Travs, and Brain Farm all interested in doing another project.
* Red Bull contracts Brain Farm, as per Brain Farm operating on their "normal" projects, to make the film.
* Film gets made.
* Red Bull and Brain Farm collect revenue.

Typically I think the brand sponsors get approached, they throw in some money and hope it gets them some exposure. It seems like the Brain Farm deal is a little more set up than that.

I would agree with this entirely. I tried to cover that when I mentioned that a lot of the riders had to pay their own way, or at least part of it. But just keep in mind that their own personal investment stems from these companies paychecks in the first place....So it all kind of pays for itself, if successful, in the end. I guess that's what we call an investment. Put money in, managed your investment, make a profit on - or at least break even :) - on the other end.

The latest ESPN the mag actually had a quick little piece on a few of the numbers from the Art of Flight. A few of the things they highlighted:
1. The Art of Flight is more expensive than That's It, That's All.
2. 16 helicopters were rented to capture Rice's mind-blowing stunts. Curt Morgan also used a snowmobile, a snowcat, a lift at Jackson Hole Resort, and a Ford F-250 pickup truck with tank treads.
3. Director-cinematographer Curt Morgan used a Cineflex V14 camera (the camera made famous by Planet Earth for its ultra-long-range system that enables close-up shots even if the camera is stationed miles away) costing approximately $600K.

Also now it seems Curt Morgan has built brain farm up into a legit business. Not sure if they still rent but they are for sure doing contracted work for alot of other companies meaning alot of that camera gear is in the pipeline and ready to be committed to a snowboarding project with ease. Not to mention Thats It Thats All is what put CM and Brain Farm on the map to begin with.

they have to build it ya but already owning a race team and building the car is hell of a lot cheaper than just going and buying one. also, im sure they didnt build that car brand new and did that, probably used a car that they werent going to use anymore. plus its a marketing tool, like i said, it wasnt just for fun. its an advertisement for Formula one coming back to America next year. so redbull gets a kickass adcertisement and we get a sweet video. its a win win situation.
