Valet Job....

Just got offered a job as a Bell/Valet at the Waldorf Astoria up at The Canyons in Park City. It's pretty upscale so I'm assuming a lot of rich people will be staying there. Just wondering if anyone has worked at the Waldorf Astoria and if they liked working there and got good tips and all.

My wife worked at the Ritz in Bachelor Gulch. Working for an upscale hotel is a lot of work. They are very particular about appearances, uniforms and how things are done. That being said, she really enjoyed her job. I say go for it. You will probably get a chance to meet some cool people, drive some nice cars and if it doesn't work out you can go try something else. Plus if you do like it, the hotel industry can be a pretty solid career.

pro tips... (country club)

learn the regulars names, learn what car they drive, and address them by Mr. "Last Name"
once you have yourself familiarized, you can have someones car waiting for them as they come to leave.
never walk to get a car. ever. time is of the essence
put on the heat when its cold, the ac when its hot.
don't drive the cars fast through the lot but don't pussyfoot either.
don't talk too much

do those simple things and you'll be making so much in tips you'll want to do it forever.

do it. I'm working a part time vallet gig right now, and get to drive some cars that i would never get to sit in the passenger seat let alone drive.

just be professional about it. hold the door open, if there is a passenger make sure you open the door for them too.

Yea i'm pumped to drive some $80 cars even if it is only through the parking lot going 20. I'm starting out at minimum wage which is $7.25 so I really do hope that the tips are good. I've heard that pulling in close to $200 a day just in tips can be pretty common during the busy part of the season. We'll see though. Might just get a lot of cheap old stiffs that never tip haha

You will. You will get the people who give you a dollar when you busted your ass for them, and you will get ones who will hook it up.

The cash can be real good, just remember you are the first impression of the place and that is HUGE in the eyes of the guest. The way your interaction goes will set the tone for their stay.

Positives of Bell/Valet- you don't have nearly as much interaction with management/brand standards as ANY other department. Most of the time you will be too busy anyway. Truth is, there's not much to it so even a ritzy place like the Waldorf can't nitpick you. Best thing is you will earn tips tax free. Even at 7/hr you really only need to assist one guest or park 2-3 cars and you will be making more than the front desk. Most days with tips you will make more than most at the hotel.
