everyone has a few facebook "friends" who clain themselves photographers. Their mom bought them a t2i or an other popular reflex on special at best buy and now they shoot away on auto and call themselves photographers.
Anyways we all know you have some of those friends: example John smith photographer. Post some examples of their shitty pictures.
not sure if the second gem worked, but go at it guys lets see some hot headed automatic shooters up in hure!
It is frustrating, but at the same time, any of the kids here who think that they are hot shit photographers now all started somewhere. Take a look at some of the first pictures you ever took when you first got a nice camera I guarantee they are probably as bad as some of these. I guess I really don't care until some douchebag is directly competing with me and is taking sup-par photos. And there really aren't many people in my chosen field so I don't worry too much.
The problem isn't that people take bad photos. We know that everybody takes bad photos when they start out; it's to be expected.
The problem is that they start watermarking their photos and creating a facebook page for their "photography studio" from day 1. I swear, it's like they come home from Best Buy with their new T1i, turn it on Auto, take a slightly out of focus picture of their dog, watermark it in a shitty cursive font, and it immediately goes on FB as the first photo on their 'photography' page. What I don't think they is realize is that the whole point of watermarking photos is to ensure that your name is associated with them so you A. get your name out there and B. don't get your photos stolen. But these people don't realize that A. their photos suck and they shouldn't be associating their name with their photography yet, and B. NOBODY is going to try to steal photos that suck!
People just need to show a little self-awareness. It's good that they just got a camera and are excited, but they need to step back and look critically at their photos and realize they're really not at a level yet where people care at all about their photography, and nobody wants to pay the 'photography studio' to have a shitty 'photo shoot' where every picture is taken on Auto. I've been filming for like 5 years and I have yet to make a facebook page for myself because I'm not convinced people really care enough, so that makes these brand new photographers even more annoying.
hahah such a funny website, there was one photo where a client was complaining that he didnt remove belly hair and a shitty tattoo from her pregnancy photos. he replyed saying that he is against taking those things out because it makes the image less true to its originality. hahaha it was the nastyest pregnancy picture ever!
i really don't understand why everyone is so annoyed by this. it's not like people are forcing you to look at their pictures or even to be their "friend" on facebook. Just delete them if it bothers you that much? I always try and just worry about myself and less about what other people do with their lives. It makes life a lot less aggravating. Just a suggestion to all you getting stressed out because of decisions other people are making in life
Not exactly. There's a big gap in the market. You either have the people who appreciate photography and are willing to pay really anything. Or you have the people who don't really care as long as they get pictures and want to pay next to nothing, since they don't necessarily appreciate it. There's really no in between and I'd be willing to bet the people who actually care make up about 10% of clients. The other 90% are the people who will go to these 'photographers' who are their friends that just picked up a camera and now have a 'business' because they know them, and they are cheap as fuck. They are willing to do technically the same thing, but for next to nothing. So unless you are getting the big clients who will pay anything, you are getting beat out by these fucks with cameras.
BUT, thankfully, this trend will die down in a few years.. hopefully. So, we just have to wait it out.
No ones getting stressed out. I find it fucking hilarious. The only reason people are making fun of them is because they put absolute SHIT photos on their Facebook page. It's like they can't figure out how to delete photos so they just upload all of them instead of picking the good ones, if they have any at that. I think that's why people are getting a bit worked up.
I like when they put a semi hot person in front of a barn or an alley and they're all of a sudden soooooooo talented. I also like when their 'models' put their pictures up and are like, 'blondy pics so talented!'
If a photographer is really worried about these people with shitty photographs stealing their market share, that photographer should really evaluate what they are doing. Hence my comment about people insecurities on the previous page.
go back to your cave, man. you're completely missing the point here. and why should said photographer evaluate what they're doing? because they're concerned about their business, and the effect these people with shitty photographs are having on said business? please, tell me if i'm missing something, but what you're saying isn't making much sense
Nah man, you're not missing anything. Same goes for us designers. It really hurts me to see people willing to do design work for next to nothing. Im not worried about someone putting out better work than me, Im worried about people undermining the market.
The way I see it art is art, no matter how good or bad it is. These kids love to go out and take photos, it doesn't matter how insignificant their subjects are.
I'm just as bad. I take shiitty photos and post them on the internet all the time example A, these are the best photos I've taken and they're pretty terrible:
As long as someone loves to do something I see no reason for them not to do it, and if they want to share their passion with the world so be it. I also love cinematography and filmmaking, I really want to get to go to school for it, but I'm horrible at that as well. Here's my reel from this year:
The way I see it, I may be awful at filmmaking now, but maybe if I get into school I'll be able to learn the tricks of the trade and develope a talent for the things I love to do.
If you love to do something do it! Don't let your skill level get in the way, there's nowhere to go but up.
for sure, its the same in all the art fields, shitty people charge peanuts for real work and now real artists have to lower their costs to meet demands or there is no longer a demand for your work.
It should be like in Urope where there is a union of photography. There is a minimum you have to pay in order to get pictures. this means that you get money if you are good and the shity amateurs dont get shit.
Those of you who are my Facebook friends can see my album. I just wanna say by NO way do I consider myself a professional or anything like that. I did at one point make my job say "freelance photographer", but that was just because some friends paid me a few bucks to take some pictures. I changed it because I knew it made me seem like that. I just like taking pictures.
I really don't think some joe blow uploading photos to facebook with a watermark on it is going to be stealing anyone's business. What I meant by that comment is, if your really worried about that said joe blow stepping on the feet of your photo business, their must be some insecurities about the "professional photographer's" business. There are some legitimate people and photographers posting legitimate points in this thread but mostly I see people degrading other people's hobbies. Someone putting a watermark on a poor quality photo shouldn't be a concern to a photographer with a quality portfolio to back their business up with. Welcome to the internet where no one has a face but everyone has a huge ego, and a huge mouth.
Hah, I'm positive that any one of us that is directly affected by this bullshit would gladly speak the same way about this, whether we are sitting behind a screen or not.
I see what you're saying here and I do agree, but those people who make a facebook page and start snappn' away are the ones who do it for free. That said, I would encourage everyone to have fun etc... but don't undercut an entire industry.
Those insecurities are legitimate because there are enough people offering to shoot weddings for $300 or a portrait session for 5 bucks.
That really does fuck shit up. As a client, someone's going to be like Joe Schmoe over here can shoot for a portfolio trade, why should we pay you anything much-less what you quoted us.
Ehh, and I think Michelle's post was along these lines. But some people wouldn't know a good photo if presented with one. I mean it's easy up to a certain point, like something shot with a digi cam from like pre 2000 (I know we have a digicam that takes a floppy disk at my house somewhere) and a 5d 2.
Like lets say two weddings are shot. Both capture all the crucial moments. Both couples see that these crucial moments were preserved as clear images and are stoked. It has sentimental value to them. But is it just a picture of them kissing? Or are there elements that compositionally make it a great shot? And does either couple see it? Maybe one of these four people has been shooting for a while and can differentiate between good and great stuff. Long story shot, some people can't tell the difference between professional and decent stuff.
All this has made me realize is that I'm gonna be picky as fuck when I hire a wedding photog. I'm gonna be looking through like every shot the guy has taken.
In saying that though that's how a lot of people have to start out. I have two friends that just got selected into the top photography school in my state out of 15,000 applicants so they're apparently very good photographers. But for them to get experience they have to sell themselves cheaply to shoot weddings and portraits. That is what the school tells them to do.
But stemming from that one has now been able to professional shoots for Miss Universe Australia, and a few big fashion brands here.
She's a fashion photographer but here are some other shots.
But then in saying that I have some horrible 'photographers' as facebook friends that take photos of things like a close up of carpet and think it's great.
Also, I would like to say that I don't hate photographers....I kind of made it seem like that. I love photographers, specifically good ones, who know what they're doing.
I just don't like it when these kids start snapping pics of random stuff, crank up the saturation, throw on a watermark and call it photography. I don't give a shit if you're just taking pictures to take pictures because well....everyone has a hobby. But if you're going to do that shit, at least know what you're doing and do it well.
I don't know if that makes sense or not...but yah. Someone feel me.
