try what evan suggested. really, there's no need for you to 'import' your clips at all. skip importing clips, i avoid it unless i have to. just drag and drop the clips from the card onto your computer, then you can encode them once they're on a hard drive
chances are your project settings either aren't set to HD in your editing program, or you aren't exporting in HD. glad you were able to figure out how to film in HD though!
FCP is usually spot on when getting the video settings of the clip. When you export however, you can export an HD file by using specific settings and sizes...if that makes sense. Just search on youtube how to export HD video and you will find the right export settings to make your video quality really pop
