Is it hard to get your permit / license to drive

Im turning sixteen in a week, and am going to be getting my permit. i read the drivers manual book thing and its pretty simple. But i was just wondering if theres any tips, or maybe some answers anyone remembers from the test.

oh and the last thread i made didnt even let me look at it or even post in it so, so if i dont give plus k its because my NS is broken

Well Connecticut is a bitch with this kind of stuff. ALOT of states are way easier to get licenses, But CT.. lol.

Depending where OP lives it may as well be really easy.

I dont know where you live but to get my permit I had to take a written exam and then wait 8 months and go through a driver training program to get my first license and then wait another year to get my full license.

i cant really compare us and europes standards, but consider that (almost) everybody is able to get it and keep it.

you are seriously "special" if you wont get your license after one or two attempts.

Thanks for the help fellow Newschoolers, i live in New York by the way. Plus k for everyone who posted so far. and another question, when you turn 16 you can get your permit then six months later you can get like a half license then at 17 you get your full license. it think thats how it goes in NY does that sound right?

How does the licensing process work in the US? In Ontario you can take a written test the day you turn 16 it called your g1. You can drive anywhere except big highways but you have to have a driver that has had their full licence for 4-5 years in the passenger seat.

You have to wait a full year (or 8 months if you do drivers ed) to take your "g2". It is a simple in car test. They just make you do a three point turn, parallel park, hill park, lane change..etc. If you can drive and have driven a decent amount this test is really easy but they can fail you on stupid mistakes.

Not really sure where I'm going with this anymore but pretty much if your system is similar to ours you'll be fine. Just study and practice.

its different in different states but in New York, you get your permit at 16 then 6 months later you get like a half license half the privalages of a regular license. then at 17 you get full license. but when you just have a permit you can only drive with someone over 21 in the car with a license. i think thats how it works

Driving test(s) in America are stupidly easy... the whole system is kind of a joke over here. I mean... we let 95 year olds maintain their license even though they're a rolling deathtrap on the highway. I wish we took driving a bit more seriously, then maybe less people would crash/die on our roads... And alot of it isn't even about our licensing system I suppose, it's our culture, hardly anyone cares to become a better driver than they need to for their daily commute. Everyone seems to blame everyone else for their faults (ex. "Why is this idiot slowing down? God dammit" - when they are upset they had to slam on their brakes because they followed the "idiot" much too close for the speed traveled). And don't get me started on distracted drivers.... it seems like half the people driving 2 tons of steel down the freeway at 70mph are talking to someone on the phone while doing it. And all of these problems become very pronounced in adverse weather conditions such as rain/snow/ice.. I worked at the local ski resort last year, and it was painful to see how bad people drove in their 4wd vehicles with antilock brakes and traction control and snow tires... and yes, I can say that they're bad drivers because I drove a rwd car with no abs or traction control and summer tires in the same conditions (say what you will about my judgement lol... the days I couldn't get a carpool together I had to take something up there)

i only know 1 or 2 people that didnt get both their first time.

the one kid failed both multiple times and has already totaled one car so take that for what its worth.

Permit test is ridiculously easy just take a glance at your drivers handbook and you'll be set, almost every question is just common sense.

That SUCKS, Here I had to take drivers ed, then a written exam, got my permit, wait 6 months, then take a drivers test and written exam and got my full license.

In NH you can just drive when you turn 15 and a half. No questions asked, no test. The test for you're license is like 20 questions or something and the easiest driving test ever and you're done. Its awesome.

I wish it was actually hard to pass those tests. Then there might be better drivers on the road. But to do that you have to employ people who are dumb as dirt at the DMV. And that's not happening anytime soon.

It is so easy. I really advise you to get out and do as much driving as possible though, when i got my license i was still terrified of driving which made me stressed and drive worse during the test. Otherwise, its all common sense.

yea man, thats what im going to try and do, im going to get my permit like in a couple weeks then drive up to NH with my dad to get my car. so i figured that would be some good practice. it will put 5 hours under my belt.

Driving tests around here suck. Most people take the tests atleast twice. They're very strict because of all the drunk driving deaths

This may come off harsh, and I don't mean to offend anyone, but if you manage to fail the written permit test, and the in-car test, you have no place to even be allowed to drive on public roads at all.

The entire license system is a complete joke. People are given licenses that are incapable of handling the 3000 lb death machines that they will be piloting down our public streets. They have no concept of the physics behind the car's movements, and how certain factors are going to affect the vehicle.

Unfortunately, we as a society made this bed and are forced to sleep in it. Our society is entirely dependent on cars and cannot deal with the consequences of revocation of a large number of licenses, even if they shouldn't be on the road. The only course of action that could correct it is mandatory driver education course that go beyond simple in-the-classroom teaching.

North American drivers need seat-time, and learn how their car will behave in circumstances. They need to understand threshold braking and traction limitations and car control specifics.

I don't see it happening though. Instead we will rely on safety systems that add weight and decrease vehicle efficiency, all while making cars more expensive, and more deadly. We will add common-sense, unenforcable legislation and red-tape.

I'm not saying I'm the worlds best driver and that I am perfect. It's a fucked up system though and anyone with half a brain and the hand-eye coordination of a five year old can be given a license to operate a large piece of machinery on the public roads.

I failed the driving part. Am I retarded? No. Do I have the reflexes of a 5 year old? No. Do I understand physics? Yes. I failed because I didn't initiate a proper merge, which is bs, I merge every day that I drive to work, do I do it safely? Yes. But I don't do it they way they want me to. I don't use my parking break, it's stupid on automatic cars. And I rarely check my blind spot when making a right hand turn. Which makes sense, a biker could come out of no where and run into me. But still, I watch my mirrors, I don't need to check I know that no one is there so whats the problem? The whole you should pretend that something is actually there to pass the test problem. I hate it. Hell at the start of the test the lady told me to pretend that obstacles where there. Fuck that, pretending something is there would make my performance worse, especially on an open road test. Oh and moving my head to check my mirrors to let her know that I check them, sure it's great for her but it means less time concentrating on driving and more time thinking "ok how do I make my head turn look obvious enough so that she notices me checking my mirrors even though I am not checking my mirrors thoroughly because I am bust thinking about how nice my head turn looked". It seems to be mostly about show than actual knowledge and skill.

I question your abilities if you couldn't make it through their pathetic little pony show that is a driver's "skill" test that thousands of completely incompetent and ill-prepared drivers make it through daily.

I was once 16-17 years old and thought I was the best driver out there. Reality is, I sucked until I had more seat time, and had experience in driving my car under adverse conditions and knew how the car would respond in certain situations.

Also to put your merging story into perspective, if everyone on the road is merging in a consistent fashion, and then 'XYZ' comes along and merges in an unpredictable fashion, it will present an opportunity for a dangerous situation.

I'm not trying to be condescending, I just think the drivers license system in North America is a laughable joke at best.

Quite possibly.

Merging incorrectly is a huge deal, it's one of the (if not the) most dangerous parts about driving on the freeway. And it sounds like because you're so arrogant and refuse to accept that you did something wrong, you will continue to drive incorrectly and be a hazard to yourself and everyone around you. Good job.

You merge every day...how exactly does that make you an expert on merging? People golf every day... most of them are terrible.

I agree with what that guy said ^ if you can't pass the test, you REALLY shouldn't be driving.

Read the book and do the practice tests question things in there. That pretty much is the test.

Permit test is real easy.



Drivers test isn't bad, just make sure to LEARN how to drive. Don't go in with the attitude of "I'm an awesome driver". Those people crash and burn.
Remember to stop at stop signs and use your turn signals.

I never said that I was an expert on merging. I never even said that I was good at it. I just know that even if I don't do it exactly to the book, (blah blah blah have your turn signal on for however long they want before you merge no more no less) that I am doing it safely, I check my blind spots, I check my mirrors. She isn't a fan of the tap the signal to get it to blink 3 times and that's what she got me on, the second time I left my signal on for a while a car was passing me which is apparently also wrong. I am a safe driver in comparison to a lot of people who somehow get their licence, I am not arrogant, I read the book so many times, and I don't think I am the best, hell I don't think that I am even a good driver, but I am careful and I am safe and I follow the rules of the road. Bitches just like to fuck my shit up for no reason.

agreed. the driving test for when you get your license is a breeze. the permit test i wouldnt have done well on if i hadnt read the book, but its still simple. i saw people failing left and right and was like fuck this is gonna be hard. but it was really basic knowledge. just know your signs and things and the rest is common sense. the only one i got wrong had to do with the punishment for drunk driving or something

I remember when i moved to Murica in 08 and did my driving test - i was actually scared by how simple it was....  and you get like 3 goes at it in one sitting to get it right! seriously...  A sea urchin could pass it.

I would fail my UK test over and over if i was made to go and take that again - it's strict as shit and you get failed for the smallest things. And it get's tougher every year... (I did mine in 97 and it was hard then!)

Drive as much as you possibly can while you have your temps, and I mean a LOT. It will help you immensely for your test. Getting your temps is extremely easy. Its pretty much a test to make sure your not blind/have downs syndrome. Take the smallest car you can to the test, remember the smaller the car the easier to drive.

i'm like 16 1/2, i just finished my drivers ed with a 100 :), anyways the permit test is the easiest thing under the sun. the drivers license test 6 months later is a bit challenging i have heard, my one friend failed like 4 times (probably because hes a retarded gorilla.) get someone who know what they're doing to teach you, AAA worked out perfectly for me. my road test is oct 12 and im more than ready.
as for restricted class DJ license, you get that for passing your road test. DJ at 6 months later i think, and regular D at 18, or if you took state approved drivers ed like me you will get it at 17.

my license is from New Jersey. Both the written test and the driving test were easy - I got a 100 on the written without studying and the driver's test was really basic things like parallel parking.

You have to have autism to not pass the permit test. IDK about other states, but in Maine, i got my license first try, and im a horrible driver. I never went over 30 mph, had to go on the highway, or park between 2 cars. The parallel parking is super lenient.

what? from what ive heard from other states, its pretty easy. especially now that kids dont have to even take a liscence written test, theres just one for the permit, you take the in car driving test, and your legal

heres how it works in MI

At 14 and 9 months you can take a 2-3 week class with a written exam at the end. Stupidly easy except very boring. After this you can get your permit.

At 16 you have to take a road test witch is somewhat challenge, but is more your nerves making you scared to fail. Pass this and you get a license, however there are some restrictions. You are only allowed to have one non family member in the car and you cannot drive between 10pm and 5am. The exceptions for these rules are if you are going to or from a school sanctioned event or work.

At 17 you automatically move up to a unrestricted license

Haha I never had this rule! Well, the curfew was midnight back then, but I could still drive around anyone I wanted.

Getting a license in Michigan is stupid easy.
