Just refrain from associating yourself with people who are bitchy. This works well for both girls and guys. If a friend flips out for no reason just hear them out, when they stop look at them blankly and ask them 'are you done?' Typically they'll realise they're being an idiot. If they don't then they're not somebody worth hanging out with.

My ex girlfriend was like that, she could go from being totally fine to being absolutely livid with the snap of her fingers, she used to catch me off guard a lot. You get used to it though (if the girl is worth holding onto otherwise), if possible just try and talk to her about it, chances are she doesn't realize what she's doing or the effect it has on you.

I don't see why you can't just tell somebody straight up that they're being a bitch. You can even lighten the situation by calling them crankypants or reason with them by saying 'why are you taking it out on me?' Like you said, sometimes they don't even realise how dumb their being. Point it out to them to help them realise. If that offends them, I really don't think it's worth it, doesn't matter how long you've known them or how much you care about them. I personally, just don't need that stress in my life.

Jay has it right. Sometimes I don't know I'm being a psycho, and all it takes is somebody telling me to my face that I need to stop being a brat. I actually tell people to let me know if I'm acting dumb. Girls might act hurt for a second cause most aren't used to being told that sort of thing (who knows why?), but after a while they SHOULD get used to it.
