Im debating these 2 sets of sticks. I can get a good deal on bh on the 190 but I dont know if its tall enough or sturdy enough. Does anyone have any input on which one i should get? Also, Is it worth to upgrade to the 501 head from the 701? Im going to have a t3i on it with a rode mic and tamron 17-50. most likely wont be putting anything on in the the future such as a rig or whatever. +K for help.

I have the 701 and 190 xdb and I like it a lot but I've never used the 055 sticks and I'm guessing they're better. But get the 190xb not xdb if you go with those because snaps for tightening the legs are better than screws

I'd go to a local camera shop and try a 701 head out. But judging by the fact I couldn't find the 717 head on B&H, the 701 is probably better.

Don't get the 190 if you can get the 055. The 190 is pretty flexy so it doesn't give the best support.

I reckon the 190's aren't really good for video, but I really like mine for photo.
I got the 190XDB's and really like 'em: they're light, small, pretty sturdy and not extremely cumbersome, like the 055's are.
I was also debating the 055's over the 190's, but after going to my local camera store and doing a side-by-side comparison it was easy for me. I'm 6"5, so you'd figure I need a big tripod, right? Well, no, not really. I pretty much never extend the center column and don't find it small. Sure enough I have to bend over a little, but with the height of the ballhead and camera itself the viewfinder is at a good height.
IMO, for photo a good ballhead is more important than a good tripod. You can always make your tripod more stable by hanging your camera bag from it. Won't move an inch.

yeah alright, im going to my camera store sometime this week to try out the legs. they do not have a 501 head. so what does everyone reccomend, the 701 or 501. like i said, i will have a rode mic, possibly battery grip and a tamron 17-50 on it.

I did a side by side comparison of the two sets of legs and I thought the 055's were way nicer. Plus they're not that much more expensive.

as fa as 701 vs 501 heads...theyre pretty similar. 701 is just more compact. However, I really like my 501, and feel that for DSLRs the size is perfect. I use my t2i on it and it works well. I also have the 055xb legs and theyre stable as fuhh, cant speak for the 190 though.

Of course they're better, but for me they weren't that much more better that I would choose the 055's over the 190's.
The 055's are frigging HUGE. I'd never lug 'em around and probably wouldn't use them half as much.
I've shot in really strong winds and rough weather, but the 190's held up nicely.
Now, don't ask me how well they are for video (they probably suck), but for photography they're fine.

I'm pretty sure the 501 is worth the extra money. More weight capacity, and I don't think the 701 has adjustable friction.
