How did you become a park skier?

I'm intrested in how other people chose to go do freestyle instead of doing other types or skiing. I started after at a young age doing jumps and the big butter boxes, after a while of quiting park for at least 2 years I came back to it, and advanced a bit better then after starting getting good, I realized that this skiing was more fun than any other type, and stuck to freestyle progressed. Now im hooked on it and do at least 90% park. :P

Care to share to? I search bar'd and nothing came up. sooooo if this is a repost then lul. :3

When I was 6 or 7 I started hitting small jumps and stuff.... then I fucked up my knee real bad and couldn´t ski for like 1 year. Skied like 1 week every year on slalom skis, untill  2 seasons ago when I started to ski pow. And last season I bought twintips... I`m 17 now. Lovin it tho!

i like this thread, i was getting in trouble my freshman year of highschool and changed to boarding school, and i chose vermont academy cuz they have their own park which is tight. Started out seshing a box in the rain by starting off a trashcan and loved it since then.

When i was 8 years old i was in one of those weekend program things. My instructor took us into the park, and all the kids would go down the landings, me and my friend actually tried to clear the jumps. I then stood at the top of the landing to the last jump, facing the quarter pipe and just bombed into it. I went 3 feet out of the QP, i was 8 and was like "SHIT" kinda scared me, but still fun. My dad didnt really like the whole freestyle/park thing, so he put me in racing. Started when i was 9 and i didnt like it, when i was 13 my dad was getting me another pair of race skis i spotted a pair of k2 fujatives for 210. My dad said if i wanted them I had to buy them, so i did. That was my last year of racing, i switched over to park and love it.

Really young and at a ski expo, the K2 booth used to give out this magazine called SKEEZE so I picked one up and hooked. I was like this is what I want to do, pics of seth, pep, andy, chris, and pk, oh and shane, I thought they were the coolest people ever! Also watched Tanner Hall kill comps and made me really want to push it. Im glad I picked up that magazine, I owe K2 a bunch!

When you're 11 or 12, going off jumps is fun.  We never had a park so the first time I actually skied a park was maybe sophomore year of high school.  We'd always sneak off trail and build jumps in high school, working on 360s. 

I probably wouldn't classify myself a as a park skier though.  Powder and bumps always take precedence.  But some days, the park is the best thing on the mountain.

Honestly when I was about 6, I saw an old guy go over a tiny jump and get a foot of air. I thought it was the coolest thing and I wanted to be just like him! A gaper made me wanna do park.

I was in Boyne Country Sports and while I was standing next to my Mom at the counter, she pointed to the Freeskier Magazine cover and said "hey, that's your cousin." (or something to that effect) The guy behind the counter said we could just take the magazine haha. Started looking through it, watched some edits/movies/contests...talked more to my cousins about it, and have been hooked on it since. I'm not the best, but it's a great sport and I love it.

Well mine is a long story....

I was supposed to be reading for school one day in December and I heard my dad coming up the stairs and i was currently on my computer. I decided to search something up that he would be okay with me watching instead of reading. So i then searched skiing in the youtube searchbar. I clicked on the first video titled freestyle skiing (crazy vid of tanner and pep from like 2004-07ish. Sickest thing i ever saw) and i then asked for a $200 dollar pair of fisher addict jr. for my birthday and then i got them suprisingly. That spring my family took our annual trip to Sante Fe Ski Basin in New Mexico (sickest mountain ever) where i then took a freestyle skiing lesson with the sickest instructor ever. (Suprised he didnt make fun of me because i was a gaper at the time.) Then i hit my first box and then i was hooked.

I was a racer, but always ventured into the park when i could, immediately stopped racing a long time ago, done deal, i love park!

i skied since i was six and was always interested in jumps. last year was the first year  i actually have been doin tricks and i was hooked ever since then.

i was a freestyle snowboarder and then the guy i liked hated snowboarders, so i switched. three years and i have never looked back.

I was into the freestyle thing from skateboarding and snowboarding, and one day about three years ago, I learned how to ski, and since I tried doing some rails and jumps on skis, I got hooked. I'm now the lead freestyle coach at Mt. Rose in Tahoe.

skied since i was 3 or so. Ripping all over the mountain hitting jumps and such. Come 4th or 5th grade saw kday barnes and hornbeck skiing at my home hill. needless to say it changed me from wanting to snowboard to never wanting to take my skis off. still sick to watch them all ski together which is rare.

truth. i skied moguls competitively from probably 10-16 but then realized hey, instead of having to hike a mogul field and being told to do things i really didnt want to do by an old lady that expected my whole group to be in the olympics by age 17 i realized that doing my own thing, progressing at my own rate and simply having fun was waaay better. however i would recomend having some background in traditional freestyle or racing before really getting into park. i feel like it just makes you that much more comfortable with everything about skiing

Funny because I grew up about 20 minutes from a mountain, and I played tennis all the time in highschool at a country club right next to it, but no one in my family skis so I never learned. Any time I thought about it or brought it up the answer was always "you're going to ruin your tennis - you're going to break something, etc." So this gentleman I dated way back in college was a freeskier. I was crazy about him and a lot of the things he was into, and it was only a matter of time I guess. My sophomore year a friend of mine told me Sport Chalet was having a 50% off the sale deal so she and I went down to HB to check it out. I had a job and had just gotten paid so I figured, what the hell, why not? I bought boots and K2 Fujatives and she bought me poles right then, without even being on skis once. The night before the first day we all went skiing together I barely slept I was so excited. I remember falling asleep late after watching Batman Begins and waking up ridiculously early leaping out of bed like "let's go, let's go, let's go!!!". I fell in love that day and now, 6 years later, I'm still just as much in love with skiing. I'm not much of a park skier, I can slide boxes and I got up to about 20 or 30 footers, but now that I'm 27 and without health INS, I think I'm a little old to be learning to jump and get nuts on urban, but I love going fast, steep terrain, and challenging myself all the same.

My older brother got a pair of TwinTips and when the skis got small they were past to me. So with the skis I hit a jump and I was Stoked!!!

Kind of a long story but here is a simplified version of it: I was riding on the lift with some friends and I saw a guy hit a rail and I thought I would try it. The guy that I saw that hit the rail ended up teaching me how to ski rails and from there on he has been teaching me how to do stuff in the park.

Growing up at a small mountain in the East Coast, you either race or do freestyle, and I was already into doing tricks and hitting rails from being a skateboarder.

I was maybe 5 and skiing around in lessons, then i finished those lessons when i was about 8 or 9. Then i basically got bored skiing around on the small east coast hills. So i followed my brother who snowboards through the park and got hooked.

Some guy at Beaver Creek cut in front of me when I was twelve to hit a little side jump and he spun around and landed backwards. That season i learned 180's and grabs at my little shitty mountain in PA and bought twintips for the next season. 4 years and 5 concussions later I quit park for my own health.

my friend was really good by the time he was about 8, doing 5's and grabbing his 3's and whatnot. So I noticed he had twin tips which were armada coda's, and I said that I wanted them to my parents, but I didn't end up getting a pair until I was 12.
