Who do you guys think is gonna win?

Personally I think NZ and France have the best chances.
NZ's tri-nations loss will benefit them IMO as they won't suffer to much from overconfidence.
Although it pains me to say it I don't think England will make it to the final.

I think England will get quite far, but not to final. Quarter or semi.

NZ home crowd advantage. Obvious winner is obvious

Australia, south africa prolly to finals

Realistically its prolly gonna be southern hemisphere all the way

English have the best chance of any Northern hemisphere side, not being biased, just realistic. We were written off in the last one and still got to the final. New Zealand have a history of choking and I can't help but feel that it will happen again even though it's on home soil. Australia and South Africa look weak this year but always play well in World cups. I can see it being out of these 5;

Australia, New Zealand, England, France and South Africa. I reckon the first 4 will be in the semi's, with Australia winning it over France or England in the final. NZ to go out in semis.

I'm so excited. It's always so unpredictable and intense.

I don't think australia will do as well as they have done in previous years (even with their tri-nations win). NZ comfortably beat them at eden park this year and England have beaten them the last couple of games.
do you think wales will make it past the groups?

Wales have a 50/50 chance, i have a feeling they could lose to 1 or both of the South Sea Islanders. The Kiwi's should win, but England and South Africa will push them.

Fun fact: The company I work for built all the broadcast equipment for RWC. So they're down there right now working, and I've been running the place over in Calgary.

I've already accepted that NZ most likely wont win, because of big game players like the aussies. but there is gonna be dark horses hanging around like samoa and argentina(somehow finished 3rd last RWC?!?) which could cause some big teams trouble in the quarters. Hopefully an Aussie NZ final. Allblacks have gotta win it or they'll never win. Regardless of what happens though I'm looking forward partying in Auckland

but Ireland with O'driscoll might be interesting

I can almost guarantee you the AB's will roll the aussies. Look at the game that you guys won. We were down 20-3 and still came back to almost beat you. Wallabies are absolutely nil!

Thought I should bump this thread given as the first match is almost over.

I gotta say I'm ridiculously excited about this. I have big hopes for Scotland. I'm not expecting an overall victory or even a place in the final. I would be over the mood if Scotland got to the semis and would be perfectly satisfied with the quarters.

Also having spent two seasons in NZ the ABs have another international supporter, but if we meet later in the competition I'm sorry AOTEAROA home country comes first.

So to restart this thread,

What are everyone's thoughts on the first match NZ vs. Tonga?

Think an Australian/NZ final would be a fantastic game. Both teams have good form coming into the tournament (although NZ has probably been better). Nothing like a good game with the people from across the ditch

Reallyyy excited about all this. Should make great watching. Going to be up bright and early for the England Argentina match tomorrow morning.. I've just read the match report and New Zealand sounded quite comfortable for the win but Tonga managed to secure a lot of possession in the second half and kept the All Blacks at bay for most of it.
I know they might not have been at full strength but they are certainly not invincible and have big passages of weakness.

Yeah I got up to watch the game (as I hope to do with most of the ones that are on at reasonable hours) and the second half was very different.

It might not be the case, but I felt that the ABs had gone into a cruising mode and weren't firing on all cylinders like they were in the first half. That could be a bit of tactics given that they have a 45 day tournament ahead of them and therefore don't want to get exhausted in the first 80 minutes, but it would worry me as a Kiwi that my team can slip so easily into a more relaxed style of play.

I want to see them play a 'bigger' team like France before I make my judgement, but I'll have to wait two weeks for that. Needless to say my kiwi mates will be very cagey about the performance they saw tonight and if a team goes hard against the ABs for the full 80 it could prove to be an interesting match.

As a kiwi I thought that the game was a little bit disappointing. The first halve was really good to watch. It was nice to see Kahui out on the wing like we have never really seen him before and he out played all expectations. Israel Dagg also played really well and is putting the heat on Mils Muliaina to be the starting fullback.
The second halve seemed to lack the drive that the first half did. We had good possession to start and made options, but that 10 minutes in our 22 when Woodcock had been subbed was poor and you could tell that Ben Franks didn't know what to do in the scrum.
Other standouts were Kaino who IMO should have been Man of the Match and SBW who did really well, managing to control his off loads and even add a bit to the kicking game.

I hate saying this but my money is on Australia to win as much as I would love the AB's to take it. The only thing that will stop them is injury as they have very little depth to their squad. Would also love to see some of the smaller teams make it through pool play/win a few games.

Sorry for the really long post, just super hyped about the RWC after being in Auckland Viaduct tonight

Viaduct was CRAZY last night.
I had a minor ass role in the ceremony, watched the Haka at eden park then headed into the viaduct to watch the game. It was MEAN. Such a good night, but so much dam walking.

Sooo... England were shit, still got the result though. I still stand by a NZ vs Aus final with Australia to win and still think England will make the semis. It's the way we like to play in World cups. Shit. But at least the Rugby team get the results. Just wish the games weren't on between 2-9am every day...

If we were shit the Argies would've just rolled us over. I agree we deffo played scrappy as usual though, which, like you said, is always the way with England in the groups.

We dont have an easy ride either. Lose the group and we prolly get NZ, win the group we get France then the Aussies.

Ok so my earlier comments about Scotland getting to the quarter finals took a mild knock this morning - Scotland really looked like the were struggling against minnows Georgia (how ITV can call a team that freakin' big minnows I don't know granted they're relatively new to international rugby, but their MASSIVE).

I seriously have doubts about the ability of Scotland to play attacking rugby and its getting a bit too nerve wracking - its not the nicest way to start a day. OK it was chucking it with rain, but that doesn't excuse the lack of imagination/pace/general flair that is present in so many of the top flight teams.
One player who definitely exemplifies this is Dan Parks - at points he is spectacular with cross field kicks and solid positional kicking, but thats it he's good at kicking. It's the other facets of the game that he's lacking in and that just about sums up my opinion of the Scottish performance - good kicking (with a pinch of salt missing 3 penalties is not good enough at international level) and average everything else.

The best match of the day has to have been Samoa vs. Namibia attacking rugby all over the place, pacific islanders getting angry and aggressive, huge hits, dodgy scrums and a bucket load of tries. That makes for a damn good rugby match.

I would love to see Samoa get to the quarters or the semis. Thoughts?

Strictly speaking as a biased Canadian, and though Samoa Namibia was a good bout i'm gonna have to give match of the day to Canada v. Tonga. There wasn't much in the way of consistent set play flair especially from the backs on both sides but what there was was an exhibition of terrific play-action forward rucking and mauling. The canucks came out hard against a heavier and more professionally trained Tongan team and displayed a keen sense of mobility and offload awareness which has been missing from the Canadian program for quite a while.

I fear for our chances agasint a more ddisciplined France on Sunday, especially since one look at the game tape will tell them that going wide on Canada will expose us wholesale if we don't shore up in the backs. However it was encouraging stuff for our evolving program and a clase game always makes for a good game!

Yeah read the write up today (no offence, it wasnt a game i was gonna get up for :p), it said there wasn't a break by Scotland, but then again they didnt have a break through their defence either. You've got a good coach in Robinson, so maybe the attacking will come in later matches.

I wouldnt worry about the kicking though, everyone seems to be having trouble.

Can't see the Samoans getting up there, they are in the pool of death after all.
