Touring setup question?

So im gonna be doing some more touring this year and need to figure out what setup I want to go with. Now the thing that I am wondering is if it would be possible to have a touring binding that could be swapped out with my rossi freeski 140's depending on if I was planning on touring that day or if I was staying in bounds/bc booters? I dont want to have a super heavy setup if I'm not planning on touring and dont want to be using touring bindings on jumps. Any help?

best bet would be BCA trekkers, basically it's a module that click into yout existing binding like a boot and transforms it into a touring platform...

Trekkers are always an option and work decently well.  The MFD Alltime plates are pretty cool new option and will tour better than a trekker but will add 600grams or about 1.5lbs per ski.  Since it is a big metal plate you lose whatever amount of flex you would have otherwise had under foot but still a cool choice. http://www.runmfd.com to check them out.  Otherwise regularly swapping out bindings is not a good idea even with metal helicoils to eliminate stripping issues you still run a risk of core rot.

main problem with that is finding a used pair somewhere. Im not trying to spend 175 for trekkers when I could get some used dukes for around that price

MFD plates are a good solution. I have a pair mounted up as my resort/side-country setup. They are way more stable than riding AT bindings in the resort, and let the ski flex underneath them.

If you wanted to go another route, you could get Binding Freedom or Quiver Killer inserts that would let you swap out your bindings. They are a little bit of extra work up front, but I've heard good things about them.

Inserts like quiver killers are more aimed at having 1 binding for all your skis, not 2 bindings on 1 ski...

let's say you drill a ski for salomon sth12s AND drill it for touring bindings, you're gonna end up with something around 12 to 16 holes in each ski ... that's almost swiss cheese like ....
+they might overlap ...

the MFDs however would also be a good option, but if the op doesn't want to compromise groomer performance i personally think that he should either go somewhere like dukes or get trekkers ....
otherwise you're always gonna have to compromise on the groomer performance ....

Man I have been mulling this over for about a year and I have basically come to the conclusion that compromising between a resort / downhill setup and a slackcountry / touring setup is just not the right way to go. That's exactly what you end up with: compromise. Personally I'm going to just do a totally separate setup for it, with Dynafits or Plum bindings and some Dynacompatible boots. So that would be my advice.

If you can keep separate setups, it will keep you much happier. I like JD's plan.

As has been said, the MFD seems to be the most solid option, but it's heavy and expensive.

Binding Freedom or Quiver Killers can be used, but it's a lot of moving screws, and the install is a bit daunting/easy to mess up.

Dukes just suck.

its not really a matter of groomer performance, these will either be used on the inbounds pow days or the sidecountry pow, ive got other skis for all around. Thats another problem, I dont really want to buy another pair of skis, considering I just picked up the joysticks and already have 2 other pairs (4 total), kinda seems a lil overkill with 5.. the only thing about that is that I probably could find an entire touring setup for close to 300 bucks (what the MFDs would cost) so its hard to argue with that. You guys actually think they will end up selling for 300 firm or will they drop down? Im thinking about emailing them about them since they are local here in SL. And yet another problem is that these are also my BC booter skis, so that kinda makes me worry bout the dukes/barons option. AHHH the decisions. Thanks for the help by the way

oh and quiver killers actually seems like a pretty interesting and possibly viable option. If i plan on riding inbounds, go FKS, if i plan on going slackcountry, switch to dukes/barons/whatever the hell else I decide on buying

i'm no expert on the matter, but i'm quite sure that quiver killers will require much preparation and alot of measuring, to make sure the holes don't overlap, then once you found a good spot where both bindings don't interfere, you're gonna have to make a swiss cheese out of your skis....
not that the ski can't handle it (it's basically like a first remount) but you will end up with a ridiculous amount of holes in each ski ...


also, i heard hoji is cooperating with dynafit to make a bombproof touring binding....
anyone else know more about this ?

I think they mdf will come down because it is a small niche market and IM0 $300=joke

Imyself like my bros jondrums plates. one mount 2 patterns

Its the economy stupid by another seperate set up Bd swap ftw

imo plum seems to be going in the more burly of tech binders

have you never heard of dukes/barons blowing up? I dont want to have a ski I am nervous about landing switch off of jumps on, and I've heard too many horror stories about pretty much all of the AT touring bindings. "its the economy stupid by another seperate set up Bd swap ftw"? what?

i personally would feel 100% comfortable on the dukes....

a friend of mine is probably one of the hardest shredding freeriders i've ever met and he stomps hard on his dukes....

on a sidenote, you also hear horror stories about almost every other binding on the market .....

Beats me why I even answer there questions

Son get a motherfuckin job and do like JD get 2 pair or put 18 helicoils in your ski or $300 for a mdf

Where is it your gonna br throwing the hudge bc booters 5 min outside brighton or in the mf room of doom?

I bet Ive been techin longer than youve been skiin. and the price of the reckers or mounts just went up for you.

Wanna argue about your avvy skills again? have your 1st aid cpr done?

The shocker brah and I have argueied bc stuff before in regionals. I love when they start the question thread you provide your answer.

then they get all huffy if they do not like your answer and pretend they know more than you.

Once again I am very hesitant to put a shitload of helicoils quiver killlers or inserts into my skis.

The Jondrums plates add a bit stack height and weight but it is only 1 mount much better for reasale Imo

shocker the best deals on bc stuff = the bd fall parking lot swap hasnt been as good lately though

Yeah, one of Jondrums' plates would be a good way to go as well. I haven't used them personally, but have only heard good things.

Hoji uses his Dynafit setup for almost everything except the super gnarly heli lines, and I doubt any of us go anywhere near as hard as he does. He even gets pretty jibby on them from time to time. I think Dynafit/Plum are pretty good options no matter what you ski. Watch the nose-butter tech talk from this year and you'll see what I mean.

"son get a motherfucking job", how bout no, taking 19 all science credits is plenty of enough work for me, and considering that a 100,000 dollar scholarship is on the line of me getting perfect grades I would rather just concentrate on school. I really dont know when I attacked you in this thread, all that I said is that I had HEARD bad things about the bindings, never did I say "man I go SOOOO huge and I need something that can handle 600 ft drops". I dont know if you were drunk the first time you answered, but I literally could not follow what you were trying to say, thats why I said "what", like please explain what you are saying. Im sure you have been techin longer than ive been skiing, when did I ever question your holy knowledge enlightened one? To tell you the truth I dont know why I would even think about buying from you, and I have no idea where you got the idea that I was even thinking about it

I have Marker Barons on my 4FRNT EHP's I use them in bounds and i used the on jumps once. Really the Marker braon and jester perform fine inbonds. I would be a bit weary of using them in the park though that would be scary landing switch with how they attach.

yeah I hear ya, I'm definitely not concerned with them holding up on lines, I just heard that they can be trouble landing switch on jumps (all BC im not talking park jumps). I will check out the jondrums plates, thanks for the help

Touring bindings are trouble landing switch period. You have to choose where to compromise.

right but with something like the MFD or quiver killers they would (in theory) eliminate that problem. That's why im trying to weigh my options
