I'm friends with all my exs. Some of them I talk to on a daily basis. You just need to separate yourselves long enough so that you can be friends without any jealousy. That's what kills the friendship. If you are trying to be their friend but also trying to get back with them, it won't work.

This. It apparently takes a whole shitload of time too... My ex and I waited 3 months to talk, we saw each other and ended up back together THAT NIGHT. Only to be making each other miserable a week later... It is basically impossible... :/

I was friends with my first ex until she got married. We dated for 2 years so it would be awkward to talk now, but I'm ok with it.

I'm still friends with a second ex, I don't think that will change, although she is now engaged. We had a different sort of relationship and breakup, and it was shorter, so I'm sure we will stay in touch.

I was friends with a couple exs but we fell off after like friends do sometimes.  I think it is possible but it can take a  little while to develope a friend relationship.  Good luck!

Seems like there's no mutual need for a friendship anymore with my big ex. I'll probably see her once a year at most not counting running into her quite often downtown. Shame to throw so much rapport and insight to another person's mind away, but yeah.

If you really think it's worth it to try, then try, but if things go sour even for the friendship then you're looking at something worse entirely.

its possible but it depends on why you broke up. if you broke up because someone cheated on the other person and you got in a huge fight chances are you wont be friends, but if you broke up because of distance or something else you can remain friends

There is jealousy, awquard feelings, protectiveness, and expectations that were not in place before you dated. Tried for 6 months with my ex. It's just not worth it. If one person still has feelings for the other, the one with feelings has a feeling of hope still when really, its hopeless you will ever get back together. My ex too wanted to be "best" friends. So she told me EVERYTHING that went on in her life including guys she fucked, because we were "best" friends. That's when i ended all contact with her. Shit sucks and can not work.

well, take my situation. before dating we were in the same group of friends, after dating we were still in that same group of friends. a few years later things are getting better, but unfortunately it's still hit or miss depending on the day.

i actually saw my ex driving today, this is the first time i had seen her since we broke up like 6 months ago. it was awkward, i sent her a text congratulating her on getting into law school because i saw the sticker on her car. awkward but im just trying to be nice. anyways as i said before, you cant be friends.

i was best friends with my ex for 4 years... the whole talk on the phone for hours each night. to see who would fall asleep first thing. we were as close as it gets, then we dated my senior year high school. ended very badly. now 3 years later she basically doesn't talk to me at all.

i dont think it can work out.. as sad as it is :/

give it a lot of time first. you need to re-figure out how to lead a happy life completely absent of your ex, then u guys can be healthy friends once your over each other. trying to rush into being friends again will probably just make some drama. i think its best to politely keep your distance for a while. i consider my first high school girlfriend to be a good friend now, but it took like a year after we broke up before i could even be around her without getting pissed off.

it's definitely possible but give it looooots of time. a lot of times (most times?) it doesnt work out, there's just too much history/emotion etc between the two people but if youre both cool about it and dont hold any grudges it can work. definitely not for a long time though, and definitely not before you guys are completely over each other
