hey i was thinking about this guy I met at A-basin on the fourth of july who skied 150 plus days this season, and it got me thinking if my real career goal doesnt work out, maybe a teacher wouldnt be so bad.

think about it, you get everyone weekend off. and all the snow days which are the best days to be out, this teacher tought at eagle high school in vail, so they had a pretty good amount of snow and a pretty good amount of snow days.

he also said it wasnt his ideal career choice but he gets paid around 60k a year and 3 months off plus a few weaks for holidays and all the snow days.

so ns discuss.

If you want to be a teacher so that you can ski... you have your priorities a little backwards. If all you want to do is ski, find a job in the industry or bum. Public education is already bad enough, people like you certainly aren't going to improve it.

really, it doesnt sound like that bad of a career if you can handle the shitty kids. you hear teachers say that they are underpaid but honestly, they have a couple month summer vacation, no weekends, snow days, holidays off... and you cant forget how early so many of them are able to retire.

i always did well in history... hmmm

I'd love to be a teacher too, but not very many teachers have the chance to live in Vail or get paid 60k a year. Most teachers make around 35k and work extremely long hours to actually make a different in their school community. Also, many teachers constantly worry about their job security. Besides that, the vacation time is great, and if you love what you teach and love your students- if money doesn't affect your choice- go for it!

depends on how you "see" your job ....

ie. you could try and "make" something out of those little rascals by trying your very best and teaching them as much as you can => very stressful job since those asshats aren't intersted in anything a teacher has to say ....

or

you just go do your job and nothing more, and just relax because let's face it, whatever they teach in high-school is peanuts anyways ....
ie. my math teacher in my last 2 years of high school would let us simply choose if we wanted to follow his lessons or not, if we were to follow them we had to shut the fuck up and pay attention, so long story short, since we knew we had the freedom to go do whatever we wanted, we actually "chose" to be in his class and learn something....

well i can tell you this, that man has probably taught me the most in my entire high-school career .... not just math, but also valuable life lessons ..... and the beautiful part about it, he didn't give a flying fuck about that school :)

If you can land a job in a private school in a ski community... you're pretty much set. Do something more specialized where you would only have something like 3 classes a day. Make them all in the afternoon. Ski ever morning, teach every afternoon.

I taught one of the spring after school programs at Mammoth Middle school for a spring and made $30 an hour. I tried turning it into an actual class, but they wouldn't let me since I didn't have a teaching credential. Such a good gig if you can do it.


I'd say that comes in close behind a ski resort marketing job or doing freelance on your own.

I teach English in Japan, its a sweet gig. I ski every weekend, and most afternoons/evenings. It's probably not gonna be a life career for me, but its great for a few years.

The old gym teacher at my school made over 100,000 a year and had a masters in gym.....proooooo. He didn't retire till like 68 cuz he had it so good.

Teaching in Colorado seems like a good gig. Shred a lot, and teach for 3 years, then you're on tenure and can't get fired unless you touch a kid. Set for life

This exactly. To the above post saying teachers always complain about being underpaid, its pretty true....At least where I live it is (NYC). They are always talking about cutting teachers off or, so don;t think its so easy.

Just because they have two months off doesn;t mean they go to the beach every day. I was actually talking about that with my English teacher; He said that since he doesn't have a great salary, he has to work at a university for the summer, and when he has days off he is planning every day out for the first couple weeks , preparing homework, creating assignments,etcetc

You also have to get your masters if you want to get a salary boost, which means more time being taken up

My dad switched from being a lawyer to teaching hs just for summers + vacations off. He does almost 0 work at home so he can focus on hobbies, like teaching my brothers and me to ski, coaching lax, hiking, kayaking and such. As long as you can put up with kids, it seems like there is no downside.

exactly my point, but i would only want to do it if i can live somewhere near he mountains like summit or eagle. or aspen or butte anywhere that is west of the divide and id be happy.

plus the longer you are there the more money and if you are envolved in sports you get more money, can anyone say free-ski team?

plus the average salary for someone in breck is around 30k, the staring salary for a new teacher is 35k.

an if you marry a rich tourist ( completely hypothetical here) you can teach then ski south america all summer. but seriously if you budget you could afford a trip down there over your 3 month vacation.

Also, the what grade is a key one, too.
I'd go for about 7th I think, judging from my experience as a camp counselor and umpire

i would go more highschool, most people I know are the biggest dicks in middle school, once they are in the latter of they're highschool careers you just dont give a fuck anymore, it would be to much hastle for me to give teachers a hrd time my junior year since i want to get into colleges.

Omg i REALLY want to be a history teacher if i wasnt going into the photography/advertising business. seriously I'm a huge nerd. I'm on a first name basis with half of my teachers, and email them all summer. plus I really like public speaking. allthough there was this one teacher who came out as gay, and two weeks later he "resigned for unknown reasons"

Please dont teach if you are basing it entirely on being able to ski. Teach because you want to teach.

I thought that OP was talking about how he met a teacher at a basin that skied 150 days... I was like wtf?! If you want 150 days a year you gotta cook meth in your van thats broken down in the ski area parking lot. Or you could start training to be a pro patroller they pack the days in more than anyone

I love my job at our local high school. 60k though seems as a pretty shitty payment for US standards - I get about 100k (CHF). But do it if you like the job and have a passion for teaching kids - despite all the trouble with teenagers, it is VERY rewarding.

Forget teaching, become an AD. The old athletic director at my school made 125,000 a year until he was fired for embezzling 100's of thousands of dollars from my school.

this.

our athletic director was done teaching by like 6th period and his classes were such a joke. if you played a sport he was way more badass, which is why i took all his classes lol. plus he pulled in some serious bank for being the AD on top of teaching too.
