I got a gun. There are a few reasons I think I should be allowed to have one.
1) I'm not gonna shoot anyone.
2) Its fun and I enjoy shooting it, so who is to tell me I can't?
3) Hunting for food is an important skill and a cheap way to get meat. I'm pretty good with a bow & arrow but a gun sure makes it a lot easier. In fact, I could easily kill someone with a bow, should they be illegal? Also, hunting your own meat is, in my opinion, much more morally sound than buying meat from the factory farming industry.
4) The government has guns and I don't trust them, so naturally I would want a gun as well to put myself on equal grounds. Why should citizens not be trusted with guns when the government is? Do you think the government is more trustworthy than the populace? Because I do not
5) There are many situations throughout history (and modern history) where a population with guns was able to defend their country once the government had failed to do so. Spain in the 1930's is one example.
6) Some pretty fuckin notable historical figures seem to agree with me.
‘‘The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subjected people to carry arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subjected peoples to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non ["something essential" lit. "without which not"] for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police.’’
-- Adolph Hitler, Edict of March 18, 1938
‘‘Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act of depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest.’’
