@smuffy I have a glock in a safe under my bed I understand your point @ mike-o can you please stop making this a retarded mess age has nothing to do with it I am 16 and a qualified NRA handgun shooter I absolutely love target shooting the thing about the self defense argument I don't think anyone wants to shoot an intruder it is something that can not be undone if you kill someone I would not want to live with that feeling forever. And I hope I never have to use a deadly force to stop an intruder but the thing is that I can if something were to happen.

major point, most people that buy guns purely for self defense, never shoot them, are unaware of the proper functions and way to handle one, and probably would never shoot a person if they broke in they would just point it at them, well yets think about this the person who broke into yor house has no feeling and probably wouldnt kill you if you didnt draw on him but since he saw a gun your ass is dead.

I really hope i never have to encounter this situation as i dont know if I could handle leaving witht he fact that i took someones life. that is something really serious and everyone who buys a weapon should realize.

I was merely poking fun of your random assumptions. Although, if forced into a situation which demanded such a response, I would not hesitate to defend myself or my family. But I don't live my life in a state of paranoid fear as some of the people in this thread and feel that I am vulnerable without a gun. I do however, love to shoot guns and am glad to live in a country where this right is granted to me by my forefathers.

Hey mike-o. I used to be just like you and argued with stubborn americans who invoked their constitutionnal right aswell as self defense to justify gun ownership. I could destroy all their arguments easily and bla bla bla, but i could never convince them they were wrong until i found out why.

Americans have a violent culture by nature. Their country was born in war, reunited in war and they always need to have a war of some kind or conflict going on to be confortable knowing they still have the best army, which they do.

I also realized that it's not like they bring their guns to your country or mine so neither you, I or any other Finn or Canadian are affected by their philosophy.

Bottom line, let them do whatever the fuck they want. They'll figure it our by themselves

For what it is worth, you can own, and shoot, a select fire weapon. It is just very expensive to do both. They are fun to shoot and all, and there is something about a belt fed .30 that just warms the hart, and kills the eardrums. That said, they are really only useful in a coordinated team. I know more then one person who is still talking today because their enemy was using an automatic weapon, instead of a semi auto.

Is society better off with or with out guns? Is it safer? I don't know. I do know that less people would be killed if we had less cars on the road, made it more difficult to get a drivers license, and limited the cars available to civilians to 25 mph. I also know that none of us are getting out of this life alive. A gun is no more dangerous then a car in the hands of a responsible citizen. As a responsible adult, I should be allowed to have, and enjoy using, both cars and guns.

as long as the police and government can carry guns, so should we. and we should be able to own the same firearms they use, meaning assult rifles, pistols, etc..

citizens carrying guns brings me more comfort than fear. because of the fact that guns exist, they will always find their way into criminals hands. and the more law abiding citizens we have carrying guns the less power criminals have. put yourself in a criminals shoes, would you want to go rob someones house in some redneck town in texas? fuck no! because you know that nearly every person in that town most likely owns multiple firearms. and its funny because its areas like that where very little gun related crimes happen, its always in the ghetto part of some big city, where guess what? the guns werent acquired legally.

so in a world with firearms, yes i feel safer knowing that the law abiding public can own an assult rifle.
if we didnt have firearms well sure id feel safer than in a world with, because its just one more weapon that a criminal can use to kill someone.

really though, its not the safety that makes me believe we should have the right to own guns. if it were proven that our right to own guns somehow created more crime. i would still believe in the right to bear arms. with regulations comes risk, and with freedom comes risk. i would much rather have to deal with the risks associated with more freedom than the risks associated with very little freedom.
If the right to bear arms did create more crime, the crime it created would be a consequence id be more than willing to live with.

I know this will make you RAGE but dude it's not hard getting a private sector non-union job, in america, with all the benefits of a European lifestyle (PTO, sick days, health insurance, salary pay, etc etc) . For example, I have all these benefits while still enjoying the benefits of cheap land ownership, general freedom, and a sense of owning something of my own (not to mention a sense of accomplishment rather than a sense of entitlement).

There are a lot of guns in Utah. At this moment in all corners of the state people are shooting guns. No one gives a fuck. Tomorrow a family might take a ride through the Henry Mountains and they will pack a rifle because there are fucking Buffalo. Bison I don't give a fuck. Somewhere east of Castledale no one will hear the shots of a few close friends shooting up old mine equipment and old signs. Maybe some teenager just completed his hunter safety course and his dad scored some elk tags and a black bear tag.  
The truth of the matter is that guns are still a useful tool in parts of America, thank god, and plus they are cool as shit. If you are having a problem with criminals or gun crime then please call the police, or buy a gun, its America.

Obviously no guns what so ever would be ideal, but I hope you realize that's completely unrealistic, and will not happen for a LOONG time, if ever. I'd put up woozy's thread he put up a while back, but I'm guessing you were in there spewing your shit about this anyway. Making it harder or impossible for good, responsible people to get guns does not make them safer, it makes them more VULNERABLE. Do I own a gun? No, and I probably won't because I'm not scared of anything happening to me that would require I have a gun up here in Canada, but I can understand if someone lives somewhere that's sketchy and they want to take measures to protect themselves. People that get guns to go rob a store or murder someone aren't purchasing their guns at a store and registering them, they get them under the table, ILLEGALLY. There might be some exceptions to this, but in general it doesn't happen. The difference in crime rates in different countries has more to do with cultural differences than gun control laws in my opinion.

not going to get into debate or anything- I personally do believe that guns should be regulated as far as people being able to purchase and where you should carry- but I enjoy my little brothers and friends
- and when I turn 21 I will buy a pistol- more as a just in case- but in actuality I love going to the range and shooting

Truth is guns are not "big scary weapons of destruction" Guns, when placed in the hands of any safe person they can be really fun. If you haven't been to a shooting range ask someone to go with you. Guns dont only have to be used for serious events. They can also be used for recreation. For anyone who is SO agains firearms they should try them sometime.

If you can't find a non lethal way to defend your home you need to open your eyes.. Tasers are clearly up to the job of incapacitating a human being. If you feel that you need a gun because that criminal can only be brought to justice by your cold gangsta ass that's sad. Killing people isn't all it's cracked up to be, trust me. That being said, byathlon is a great fucking sport so I'm not totally against em.

Why shouldn't people have the right to do drugs? Ron Paul actually wants to legalize all drugs and I wouldn't be surprised if it happened in the near future. And the constitution doesn't say anything about not being able to use drugs, not saying you said otherwise, but drug laws doesn't do much. The only thing the drug laws have done is create a war on drugs which isn't getting us anywhere.

You're right.

We all have at least one assault rifle at home (mostly) , usually a SIG-550 or a variation. This is because the military service is compulsory, concerning all male Swiss citizens, with women serving voluntarily. It usually last between 18 to 21 weeks non stop followed by a few weeks every year until you're 35 or something.

After the Service, we all keep our main rifle at home, be we don't have any ammo for it. Ammo are given during compulsory shooting training every year or during a potential "invasion time", which will never happen.

Be it cultural differences or gun control laws, the utopic view of a pacifist world is still ideal. We all gotta have dreams, right? Generally speaking - own a gun, responsibly or not, just try to see the other side of the coin.
