So me and some bros wanna go on a surf trip next may. We're thinking indo/bali.

Prob for about a month.

None of us are experienced surfers. We are looking for somewhere with decent breaks we can learn on but also somewhere we can go and try out bigger shit. We dont wannna rip longboards on tiny waves forever.

Any tips? reef break is fine obviously. just if you have any experience offer up.

looking at a budget each of about 5k

dont go to those places if you arent an experienced surfer. You wont be able to get the "most" out of the waves there. Plus all the resorts there are expensive. Go to PR or Mexico, closer, cheaper, and still solid waves

yeah we went to bali earlier in the year and it is most defiantly not expensive and food is cheap as to, but i do agree that if you dont know how to surf all that well then dont go there as, on the breaks can get really gnar and there isn't really anything much for the novice surfer, tbh you knt go wrong may places in the us and mexico,

I agree, if there is any swell at all then Bali will beat the shit out you. Go to Mexico or Costa Rica. In Mexico you can go down to just north of Puerto Vallarta to surf at Sayulita or Punta Mita. If you have the money Punta Mita is particularly cool since you can pay a boat to take you out to a couple of great spots where the crowd will be minimal. Punta Mita is where I really honed my abilities on a short board. Also you got Sayulita right there which is a laid back beach where you can surf as well. And you can also go to Puerto Vallarta for nightlife if you're looking for it.

Costa Rica is great as well, you can look into staying a few weeks at Playa Grande, great surf spot that is always breaking. Beautiful clear water, you can watch sea turtles swim beneath as you wait for a wave. Also, you've got Tamarindo nearby if you're looking for nightlife.

thanks for the heads up guys. cause yea i know may is big wave season in bali/indo and it prob would beat the shit out of us. i dunno if there are spots with smaller waves (3-6 foot) there. but im just looking to go somewhere with decent consistant waves and a good night life nearby/ and cheap!

I go quite a bit to Costa Rica (just got back from being there for 3 weeks). Costa Rica is one of the sickest places on Earth. Pretty much anytime is good to go except September and October, it'll rain torrents everyday. During May you'll probably be fine, you'll catch the tail end of the dry season. Honestly the waves are pretty good all year round, but the best I've ever surfed it was during spring break at the end of March. Check out Playa Grande, that place is great. Just south of it is Tamarindo and further south is Avellanas and Little Hawaii where I usually surf.

well you could jus head down to cali...

it has pretty good waves and aint as heavy as places like bali. and would be really cheap and autumn would mean good waves cause storms are larger and more frequent, and the waters still at its warmest. around huntington beach prolly would be good.

europe is also really good in the autumn time. in france around biaritz there are alot of good breaks such as hossegor, le seingoisse , capreton etc. good beachbreaks there alot of them can get quite heavy and barrel, especially hossegor.

or portugal in europe is also really good around peniche.

I hope you like swimming and washing machines.

Seriously worst idea ever. We aren't experience surfers but we don't want to rip small waves that are good for learning on a board we'll actually be able to ride. We'd rather go hit some big waves farther out, on a board we'll struggle to catch waves on, and the wave size will send us through the spin cycle

huntington beach is not a good place for inexperienced surfers.


Venice used to be sick. A little closed out but good for learning and never crowded. The beach is more crowded now that the pier is re opened and they have the park a little bit down. No crowds in the water though. Sunset is a good spot too.


Always worth it to go somewhere where it isn't crowded to work on stuff. No point in paddling out into a huge lineup to get beat down by waves and run into trouble with locals.

bali is a sick place. i love it there been there 3 times now and going back again in october! there are some smaller waves in kuta that you can surf which isnt horrible but my sister just got back from being there for a month. she went to a surf camp and she had never surfed before ever. she said it was awesome so there def. is waves out there that you can conquer but just like other people said you wont get the most out of it. also the food is fuckign awesome there and its cheap as. i always get 2 meals every dinner cause its so cheap and delicious! man i cant wait to go back!!

go to nicaragua. much closer than indo, and incredible breaks. I went in december, which isn't the high season but still surfed shoulder to head high waves all day. We stayed in San Juan del Sur which is an illin little surf town, can stay at hotels for like 25$ a night and get meals for 10 bucks. plus you can buy 50 cent beers and weed is like 30 bucks an ounce (central american weed but weed nonetheless haha). Also the country itself is beautiful once you get outside the major cities, rainforests with monkeys swinging through the trees and beautiful sandy beaches. we surfed at this break called Madera mostly which has a surf shack right on the beach that you can get beers, fish tacos, and sleep in a hammock. people are generally mad chill about a 1/3 are ex-pats from cali and florida and the rest are local nica shredders.

Come to the Oregon coast. Go at least 3 time a week. It's getting a little harder with the sun going down earlier. We get some decent swells tho.

this, or costa rica. I would suggest heading down to the tamarindo area (in CR), there are some sick beaches all within a half hr drive that you can make day trips out of if you want bigger waves and the actual beach of tamarindo is very touristy for a small costa rican town, but there are a pretty decent variety of waves. mostly smaller though. only downside for me are the amount of tourists and you won't get that $30 oz of bud there haha

btw there is ALWAYS a ladies night going on somewhere in a touristy tropical town, so find out when those are and go there because ladies get as many free drinks as they want and if you're friendly/charming enough they might even pass them off to you haha.

I love that town. Learned how to surf on that wave. There's also bigger breaks in the area, too. Definitely a cheaper alternative to Southeast Asia. If you wanna go there expect to pay a ton for airfare. Once you're there though I hear its really cheap. Have yet to go there though so I know close to nothing about the surfing

well we have experience riding long boards on smaller waves. we just want some place where we can get semi-easy access to different wave sizes.

should have been more clear about that. i rode short board before but the waves were far too small and the board was way too skinny.

i dont think any of us are looking to go out and be instant shredders. we just all wanna move past riding long boards on smaller waves and try out shortboards so we can try new things.

since we are going for about 6 weeks. an airfair that is pricey might be worth it for a place that is cheap.

just gonna be a bunch of bros. so more or less just surfing and drinking. none of us smoke weed so thats a non issue.

the vid above with punta mita or w/e looks like a good size wave.

No disrespect to the Oregon coast but its not exactly where I would want to go for a surf vacation.

There's some good advice in this thread. Basically hit up Mexico, Nicaragua (its next on my list), or Costa Rica. And if you're just learning to shortboard try starting out with a fish board to get the hang of it, don't get a big dick and grab the board you think looks coolest first.

Don't go anywhere in the US, make it a real adventure.
