If you hate changing batteries every 3 or 4 hours, you're gonna love battery grips. I don't have one under the philosophy that it's doesn't increase battery quality, it just increases battery quality.
But I should get one just so people will think I'm pro
like our general opinion? i think the decision to use one should be yours, not ours. whether or not you like to use them depends on shooting technique, equipment used, etc. when im shooting sports for hours or hand holding a heavy lens i like it because it reduces wrist fatigue. it also helps hand comfort because my hands are too big for a bare grip, so my pinky hangs off and cramps unless i have a grip.
I got one of the knock offs on ebay for my T2i and really like it. It doesn't do a whole lot but it makes the the overall build of the camera feel better and more like a prosumer camera. It's also nicer for taking pictures vertically and for $40 why not?
I bought one for my d3100. nikon doesnt make one though so i had to buy thrid party which sucks cause the build is really cheap, but it works. mine combines both the batteries so you;'re not like having one die and going to the other. when they run out theyre both out. it also makes the cam bigger which is a plus for me cause my hands are a big big for the cam itself.
i did the same thing and after about a month it started to fall apart. Now my grip is duck taped to my camera. haha but it works and it makes it nice when you have it mounted up on a glidecam because you dont have to take it off the glidecam to change batteries
