HELP Sizing OPUS

I am 5'8 165lbs, type 3 skier and I dont know if I should get the 178 or 185 in the Opus this year. +K for any help...Thanks NS

being a rockered ski and planning on getting the most out of the deep stuff on them, I decided to go for the 185's. I'm 5'8", 155lbs, type 3. Have yet to ski them though.

Go for the 185 for sure. Rockered skis tend to ski shorter than cambered skis. You're going to appreciate the increased effective edge and increased float in the deep. They'll feel a bit big at first, but once you get the hang of how to ski them and make them your bitches, they will do anything you want them to.

Yeah go 185...I'm 6' 190lbs and they don't feel long to me at all....now I know that I'm bigger than you but I've been riding 178s for a while now in the park and was a touch hesitant on the length but they're super easy to maneuver...and I forget the actual dimensions so don't flame me but I think the actual running surface is 176 anyway so you'll be fine....the midsole mark is -2 of dead center so if you mount -1 of center I doubt you'll notice the length....or for piece of mind mount a schizo binding....then you can at least try dead center....i would not recommend mounting stationary bindings dead center on that ski due to the fact that it is not a true symmetrical ski....but it's my experience that a dead center mount on any ski lessens the noticeable length....more so on a rockered ski....hope that makes sense...and you'll love the ski....amazing

In all seriousness. I love Line. I I were in the market the Opus would be intruiging. But the length would be a deal breaker. I'm sure that's one of the reasons Armada made a bigger JJ.

If you're still growing, get the 185. If not get the 178.

Well session unless your bigger than I am at 6' 190lbs.....I think you'd be missing out.....the whole length thing is a joke....dude pollard was bombin drops on skiboards at one point....way back when I used to ride 205 all mountains and now I doubt I'd go over 185....I've ridden longer pow skis and they're a bitch in tight trees....you can say manly length all ya want but it sounds to me like somebody is tryin to make up for a shortcoming perhaps?

You need what we call a "quiver" I ski there is a 25cm spread in my quiver, 32cm if you count my slalom skis.

Yeah I have a quiver...I've been skiing a long time...like 20 yrs.....I currently own 5 pairs....my opus is the longest I own though....personally anything over that would be overkill for me....I've ridden friends current 190somethin skis....and I get it.....more stability at speed and on landings....like I said I used to ski atomic 205s back in the day.....but last year I played on a friends 172 bacons in the backcountry with zero issue....there was one time I ate poop tryin to do a 360 slash on em but for general riding they were fine....but I've also ridden longer pow skis fine too until the trees got tight or ya got on a groomer and they were extra chattery.....to each his own really but to say a 185 isn't a manly length is jus nonsense....the only reason for a longer opus would be if I was like 6'3" and 250lbs ya know?

You could get away with the 178. I have a bud that's almost the same size as you who got the 178 and said it's perfect for him.

Get the 185, you will not regret it. I was 5'9 riding 173's, and stepped up to 181 caylors, which measure out about the same as the opus. Much more stable, still quick in trees, and can handle a lot more. I was skeptical at first too, but now I feel like I could ride a 191, it's so much more comfortable

And now on to someone who knows what they're talking about. The jump from 173 to 185 is going to be dramatic. Can you ski it? Absolutely. Depends on what your going to use it for. If it's general jibbin and tight trees go 178. If your bombin monster cliffs go 185. The opus has about a 2.5 rise up front and a 1.5 rear. That's just my eyeball measurement so don't quote me. So the actual running surface on the 178 is about 173-174 which is what you ski now. The effective edge however is prob closer to about 173-4 too. This is very different compared to alot of pow skis out there with far less effective edge in relation to length. So if you feel like you may grow alot over the next two years, you may want to go 185 and deal with the extra length. Honestly though after hearing what you typically ski is say go 178. It'll be plenty stable for ya and you'll appreciate the manueverability. Like I said at the beginning of the thread though, I have the 185 and I have yet to feel like I can't control the tips at speed or in tight trees etc but I'm taller and heavier. So it's gonna come down to how your going to use it but if I were your size, comin off a 173.....I'd personally get the 178.

Hey sailorski. The 185 opus skis like any other 190 pow ski. More effective edge due to sidecut and more running surface due to the decreased early rise. So you kinda should be all over em.

You said earlier that the 178 would ski like a 173 and now you are saying that a 185 will ski like a 190. You clearly don't know what you are talking about. And it is a rockered pow ski, a 178 is not going to have a running length in the 170's. Even on cambers skis, the running length for that would be less than about 170

I'm sure it will be great. If you ride 178 Chronic you made the right call going longer with your pow ski.
7cm honestly isn't that much difference in size. Its a trade off. The 185 will float a bit better and the 178 will be easier to spin. I rode the EP Pro and the Bentchetler last season and personally, I'm thinking of stepping back down to the 178 Opus or even SFB to have a more versatile ski day to day.
Realistically, you are only talking 3.5cm more/less nose/tail with between the sizes. Most people in the 5'7 to 5'10 / 135-170 lbs could happily ride either, its just a matter of preference (and NS man points obviously). (I'm 5'9 / 140-145).

Sorry dude my intention wasn't to make you doubt your decision. The way I see it is you're the size of guy that could enjoy both sizes. If you will basically only ride these when its a pow day, then the 185 is probably the right decision. On pow days, I was perfectly happy with my EP pros and Bentchetlers. Its just that I ski in europe and have a 2 ski quiver. One pair is park skis (Lizzies but probably something narrower this winter) which have next to no edges underfoot, The other pair is my pow ski. The result was I ended up skiing groomers, slush/crud days, tight chutes etc with less perfect snow etc on these fat 183-185s. Which while do-able, I found tiring and un-necessary, especially since we didn't get much snow last season. Thats why I'm looking at going a bit shorter for this year. I haven't skied the Opus by the way, so take my opinion with that in mind.
Ski length is just preference though. I'm sure you will love either length. 185s are gonna be floatier, less tip dive etc. There are lots of benefits either way really.

You'll be fine. The 178 would be mire jibtackular and the 185 will be more stable and a touch less easier to spin. But like I said before, the 185 feels fine in the trees,etc. I've not had that feeling yet like they would cross tips or be difficult to control at all. I think you'll be fine.
