blue mt preseason is pretty fun but big boulder preseason is always the best. i dont go to blue that often but i think sidewinder opens in mid jan not 100% on that though. PM .7331 he is park crue there and he can give you a more accurate date.

Blue usually opens around mid December, but only a few trails. Come around is open first day though.they usually do a pretty decent job with it. Sidewinder doesn't open forever then though. Probably mid January?

every. freaking. year.

blue opens, generally, the same time as every other local ski area. they have a park (better than most, in my opinion) for opening day, just like every other local ski area. their big park gets built full size and opens early-mid january, just like every other local ski area. sorry bear creek, you don't have a big park.

Is bear's park really not that good? I havent been in forever but theyre a pretty valid option for my season pass this year because its way cheaper than blue.

Blue opens when its cold, sidewinder when its colder... And oboe wait till you see some of the new features. Only one new feature is being constructed as of now but its nice and has to do with rb. and what im super stoked about is super fat coping, like 6 to 8 inches in diameter of it. and actually its not just coping its a whole rail cause rails are better than boxes

I'd say it's pretty good. Course I'm employed there, and don't really even ski a ton of park. I'm sure some of the blue locals can expand on this and will.

IMO

Bear seemed to have more features (I could be wrong, settle down blue locals) but they are a lot of basic type rails. It is definitely enough to have some fun on for a whole season.

Where blue has some wierd shit like blow up pyramids and wooden wallrides and some crazy stuff like that. Along with plenty of basic type rails to work on your skills. Blue seemed to be set up a bit hmmm larger I guess you could say. Also a good option for a fun season of park riding.

All in all honestly they are both PA mtns with not a ton of vert, conditions bordering on what you can call snow, and can get pretty packed on the weekends.

If it were me, I'd let location and price dictate your pass rather than trying to compare the two parks as I'd bet they aren't really all that different.

That's about as non biased as I can be right there. Sorry, I had a lifty total my truck in the blue parking lot and have only been back about twice since. It's much farther from me than BC though so that's most of the reason. Hell I could walk to BC in 10 minutes probably.

Not to sound like a crusty weekend warrior but BC's lodge beats the shit outta blues too. Can anybody give me some insight on this outdoor lounge bar type thing blue put in??

The new "Slopeside pub and grill" they built is pretty stupid. No kids ever use it and when i walk by i see a bunch of families and older people just loungin, Not even eating anything. Blue has been making a lot of stupid changes the past 2 season that in my opinion are completely unnecessary.

haha it's a pub, of course the kids aren't gonna use it. Not trying to be a dick, but I'm 30 and a nice place to sit slopeside and have a beer without bunches of groms running around is actually pretty enticing if you ask me.

Can anyone of age(sorry masties if your actually of age) make a comment or two abut how this place is as far as bars go??? I might actually go to blue once or twice to check out a new bar if it seems worth it.

BC's bar is not bad, pretty classy actually, but just doesn't have a mountain bar feel to it if you ask me. Good thing they make up for it by stocking some quality brew. mmmmm i love me some magic hat single chair.

I might drag the park skis up to blue once or twice this season even though it is about 30 ro 40 minutes from me and I'll have a pass to BC.

Being born and raised on shitty PA mtns I kinda have a special place in my heart for all of em honestly. From Spring to Elk I usually hit a few of em once or twice throughout the season. Just not those western ones like seven springs cause no way am I driving 4 hours to still ski in PA, I could just about be in VT in that amount of time. Besides, too many penguin and steeler fans out there anyway haha.

They've got some killer angus burgers there that are only around 6 dollars which is great for Blue.

I can't wait to see the feature you're talking about, Ryan. Sounds awesome.

The pubs ok (im 25 btw ha), and a blue local. during the season its much coolers cause youre already there and youre shits on so driving down the hill in ski boots for a beer is rough. Still gonna pay something like 4 bucks for a domestic beer, but oboes right the food is banging. In my honest opinion tho, bc lodge/bar is much better. In reference to the bc bar, has anybody seen Tim Brennan lately i really need to talk to him...

that's pretty much spot on. if i grew up at bear and skied there all my life, i'd probably like it more, but i didn't, and i don't. blue's got more vert and more pitch, which inherently leads to better build bigger jumps. small jumps are a toss up. both places have a few really awesome rails and jibs. as a whole, i think since blue got rid of the bulk of their circusy crap, i like their rail fleet a little bit better. it just seems more professional to me. some of the stuff at bear scares me, like the flat bars that have about 3 feet of rail that's slightly angled down on either end. seems like it'd be pretty ripe to impale you. i don't think they slide that well either, but whatever. snow at bear is usually better than blue on a weeknight. i can't vouch for weekends, since i don't go to bear on weekends except for comps. bear's got a nicer bar with better beer and better value, blue's got a better bar vibe and slightly cheaper food.

Just for the record I don't think Tom builds all the rails like that.......the cat drivers like to add a bend here and there to our rails from time to time. haha

ha yea, i think that happens a bit everywhere. Nothing like modifying the rails you spent alot of time building and alot of the mts money with 1200 ft.lbs of torque...

The one's he's talking about are the old ones Andy built back in the summer of 04.  The have the same ends that the stair cases had.  Kinda goofy if you ask me but that's just how they were built back then.  Those probably have about a season left in them before I get tired of lugging those behemoths around.  I think we only had one collision this past season...  Tiller dropped on that 20ft. box (thankfully not spinning) and then Bob somehow bent it back up perfectly.  I still don't understand how his voodoo magic works.

first time skiing was bear creek, when it used to be "the fastest way to hit the slopes!", but ski club trips were every friday to blue so both have a place in my heart. I still go to blue and get the business person special discount with my business card and used to go bear when they had the locals discount for 17 bucks when my license still said I lived in Macungie. Basically I only ski in peeyay on weeknights and where I don't have to spend much dough. I would beg to differ about western PA though, blue knob is a dirt cheap hidden natural gem and they don't give a fuck where and what you ski, the only legit glades without getting harrassed by trollers, and it has the highest elevation bar in the state and since its so out there bumblefuck beer is cheaper than water. Besides it may snow there this weekend and early season clippers blowing south over lake erie produces the earliest snowfalls this state sees.

So how long does it take to drive there from say Alentown?? I didn't mean to talk shit on western PA mtns. Hell I think some of em may be better than the pokes. I'm just saying I can be in NY in 3 hours and vermont in 5, so you won't catch me driving 4 hours to go somewhere in PA. That was my point.

Also Jack frost is open tree policy these days.

last season i rode both bear and blue a fair amount. blues stuff is definitely bigger and has more opportunities, but i honestly hate some of their rails. the way they feel under my skis is just weird, i dont know if its the coping or the type of steel they used but it just feels inconsistant and weird. Bears park is usually packed full of features but i think they had some trouble with snow last season because it seemed we didnt have a full park untill the middle of february. Also, BEAR BLOWS REDICULOUSLY SLOW, HORRIBLE SNOW. i wish they would pound the parks with snow periodicly, rather then having all their hard work go to waste because the snow is too slow to hit anything, even with a fresh hot wax.  i would not plan on hitting anything of size from the hours of 8am to 2pm... i love bears park but the snow  is the reason i will be riding blue on weekdays this year. while on the other hand, blue gets in pretty mangy shape by the afternoon on the weekends and warmer days. blues big jumps are a ton of fun and were hittable pretty much every time i went there last season.

molly, which rails are you talking about? all the crap square coping boxes? i think all the actual rails are pretty consistent and well built. i'd kill for bear's snow at blue though. they blow snow that settles gets very firm on purpose, so it lasts longer and they have to blow less. they're plenty capable of blowing good snow when they want, but it doesn't usually happen.

It's cause we're so far south, it makes for superb blowing temps. I hear that's also why spring blows so hard. I think we should all be thankful that we don't have to ski at that place.


They do alright with mtn biking though. Hey my buddy is gonna be it the gravity east race at blue this weekend, he actually took first at spring two weekends ago in the AM division I think. he's hoping to pick up a sponsor or two maybe if he does well this weekend. I'd go support but I'm off to the beach.

yes, i'm talking about the boxes. they are like grabby or something. the other rails are nice. im so hype for the new red bull wall. that thing looks awesome... bear's snow is awesome at night, but any given weekday morning which WOULD be amazing riding time, you literally can stand stopped on the trail and not slide at all. rarely are the jumps hittable during the day, which is the best time. it just really bothers me because that's when i'm there the most and they could definitely do something about it because their snow wasn't always like that, and other mountains don't have that problem. not saying bear should blow mini icesicles like some places do, just that they need to tweak something to get the snow a little faster. even all the old men that ski in the mornings bitch about it. and i've seen the tune shop give out hot waxes to customers because of the snow, and the wax doesn't even help. my mom works courtesy patrol and she has gotten many complaints about the slowness of the snow, not only from park riders but from lots new skiers and experienced ones too.

Going to have to agree with the beginning part of this, i rode bear almost every MWF last winter and i would go from like 9am-2pm and i have never been to another mountain in my life where even if i do a fresh hot wax the night before it still feels like im skiing on gorilla glue. Its crazy how slow it can be sometimes even when the temperatures are not that warm. Im keeping my pass there this year because of the proximity to school but its crazy. Blue on the other hand has its own set of situations... from my experience(3 yr pass holder there) it is always either rock hard, or is legitimately like skiing on sand or rock salt come afternoon/night time. It is one of the strangest surfaces and thats why certain trails get rutted extremely fast. Overall i like both places parks a ton but i would much rather take bear's rails and features, but blue mt's jumps all day. Come mid winter that line on sidewinder is prime to train haha.
