Moving Out

Has anybody here left home while still in high school? I will be 17 and a junior in high school in the fall and its something that I have been seriously considering and saving money for since winter. I have talked to a friend who moved out when he was going to be a senior, and he is now in college and says it was one of the best decisions he has ever made. I have saved up enogh money to live off of (apartment, food, everything) for about a year, and if worse came to worse I would sell my car. I'm not really just going to run away, my mom is fully aware that I want to leave but she has forbidden me from doing so. I would probably continue speaking with my father, but basically I feel like I really need to be fully separated from my family. So I'm wondering, has anyone else gone on their own at a young age and against their parents wishes? Did you think it changed your life for the better or was it a disaster? Like I said I only know one other person who has moved out before high school was over,so I would really like some other opinions from somebody who has done or considered this because iy is a really important and semi- permanent decision. Thanks

yea, i got a friend who moved out at like 16 (she was in grade 10) and is still living on her own (she's 18 now and out of highschool). that's about all i have to say about this... um, yea.

I've wanted to move out and get away from my family since I was seven. However, I'll probably end up living at home until I'm in University, or when I'm finished University. If you're serious, and it sounds like you are, you have the money, and a way to keep making money, then for sure, move out.

yea you seem like a pretty smart responsible guy from what i know, if oyu have the money and everything saved up and its something you really want to do then go for it. I personally dont know anyone thats done it though so sorry my post doesnt mean much..

if u think u can handle it, do what u thinks best....this girl who was a senior this year, she couldn't stand her family and her family is really messed up cause her little brother moved to new mexico to be w/ his real dad when he was 13, but she moved out like 1/2 way through the year, and her parents paid for rent of her apartment, but she did well and i guess she likes it a lot more

if your home life sucks, maybe. But still, your house is free. Save for another year at least and you can afford something even better.

Give it a chance... Dont ruin the relationship with your mother cause you want to be independent... So what live your own life but wait to move out.. Your still growing and maturing and if you move out now adn shit happenes will you be able to go home?? Are you going to be able to keep up with school,work,keeping an apartment and get good grades to get to college/uni or is life going to become one big party and your just going to waste it all... If you have to leave your house due to fear of your life then yes but I dont think that is why you have to leave.. So ya it could be one of the greatest decisions ever but it could also be one of the worst... It will make you grow up SO much faster having to worry about paying the bills and such...
stay at home where it is a free ride and enjoy it..

when i'm rich i'm going to give my kid an apartment when he gets around 16 or so and it'll be his 'party' house. i'll be a kick ass dad.

I agree with skiier chick.
I don't really know your situation, but no family is perfect. You seem like a smart and responsible guy, but you are still young, and you'll have plenty of time in your life to live on your own. Remember that your family is your family. They helped make you what you are today. You will probably really regret it in the future (but like I said, I don't know your situation) if you just cut them off.
If you can stick with it for an other couple of years, I think you should. Save that money for post secondary school.

I'm going to be 21 this month and I still live at home. I have a 4 year old sister who makes HW imposible, a very controling mother who stresses me out in so many ways, and a short tempered father who can't do too much because he has a heart problem. Still, they are my family, and I think that they will always be important to me.

i move out for the winter to go to kamloops and ski on the Sunpeaks team, but i live at home in the summer, its pretty sweet when you can be on your own at 16, but i still like being able to live at home in the summer

Yeah, I've left home. I had just turned 18 when I left and moved 2500 kilometers away to another city, another island and straight into University. Sure at the start it was really hard and I missed my family quite a bit. Straight away I got so busy and was partying so much, meeting so many new people that I was on such a high and such a buzz from life that I was so stoked to be here. About a month ago it started to quieten down and I realised that you can't really go whole weeks at a time without sleeping and then I really started to miss my family a lot. Often times through high school I thought like I really wanted to move away and get away from them but it was for the best that I didn't. Now that I have I have a really great relationship with my family. I still would if I had stayed home for university but my advice to you bro is: If you can make it work for a little longer then go to the effort to make it work. You'll save your relationship with your mother. This may not sound like much to you now but in a few years if you're not talking with your mom it will really really hurt. You'll also save money and it can be put to better use when you need to move out and go off to study or ski or whatever you do but if you really really want to move then sure, you'll probably be fine, follow your heart man.

stay home. it cant be that bad. My advice is to appreciate what you have food, a house, stuff like that. Your parents are something you should never get unattached from. Even if you move out, try to keep close with them

Paying bills sucks. It can end your hobbies REALLY quickly. Many parent/child relationships will repair themselves once the child leaves home, however, it can also ruin the child's life. You would be forced to become an adult instantly, and have to worry about all those adult things. Phonebills, food, rent, car payments... unless you have a TONNE of money, there's going to be a lot of things you will have to give up.

I say finish highschool at home, and then move out for university. It won't be that much longer, and then everybody your age will be dealing with the same thing, and you will have support.
