Armory wars

anybody read them? i'd like to, but don't know where to start, other than the first comic i bought like 5 years ago. besides that, i'm confused between there being 4 larger books, and then a bunch of shorter ones. (same issue i'm having with wanting to start walking dead) i just need someone to explain, basically, what's up with the two formats, will i miss anything with one, and etc.
