What video camera or dslr for begginers?

I recently decided to get into the filming field of skiing, and i wanted a video camera or dslr to make some nice edits, im not looking to buy a t2i, t3i, 7d or mad expensive cameras like that, im just looking for a nice video camera to get started

Requirements

-720p@60fps (i do not want a 30 fps camera)
-5mp+ still photo capability (for a dslr 8mp+)
-Night mode (or a light for night filming)

How much are you willing to spend? a used Panasonic GH1 is like 5-600 bucks. Technically not a DSLR or a video camera, but can take amazing video (especially with a firmware hack), and pretty good stills too. I just got a GH2 and I fucking love it.

Honestly that's what you're going to have to pay. In the long run you will be pleased for sure. I got a t2i over some "okay" Panasonic with gimmicky features and I am for sure 100% satisfied and so happy I didn't get the Panasonic.

im not gonna have to pay that much for a begginer video camera

Canon vixia hf r10 is $200 and it take some pretty nice videos

my budget is $400 for a video camera i prefer canon but it can be any other brand

scratch out dslr cant afford them haha

I used a Sony HDR-CX100 for a while and it was pretty good. and I got it for 250 bucks. No Night Mode, and it can only record in 60i, no 60p, but it produced some good video for the price. Check the vimeo link in my sig for a few sample vids with it.

Nice! Yeah that park is definitely the nicest in CT. But unfortunately this summer I had ACL surgery so I was just filming.

Yeah all my friends that were in those edits either moved to CO, moved to PA, or tore their ACL in the last couple weeks. So I need some new people to film with. Definitely shoot me a pm if you guys are goin some time and want me to make an edit out of it.

Check out a Canon HFS100 or similar cameras. I used one for 2 years before my t2i and it was perfect. 8mp pictures I think (don't remember too well), 1080p 30fps, don't remember if it had 60, but you can get some fine slow motion from it if that's really what you are looking for.

chill man. he raises a good point. And look at a canon hv20/hv30. Even though they record to tapes i really liked mine.

ITT: Kid who has no idea what he's talking about denying advice from people who have been shooting for years.

A DSLR setup really costs a lot if you want to produce good, watchable footage. If you want to produce soccer mom footage, go ahead and get it.

Get the HV30 or 20. Or just keep on saving.

thats what ive been trying to say

i dont want a dalr because im looking to get into the filming field i dont want to go to a $500+ camera until a year of experience, they arent that expensive i just have no experience and dont want to waist money on a dslr i wont even know how to use, i just want a hd video camera'

Haha yep! Before I bought my T2i my mom told me I was wasting my money because they sell 1080p cameras at Target for $250.

It's not really a real camera, it's more of a toy. You won't learn anything about cameras from using it, but if you don't know much about cameras it may be a good choice because they're easy to use and you can just keep it in your pocket and pull it out when you want to film. As for videos just look, they're all over the place. Their nothing special though, just because they film 1080p doesn't mean the quality is great.

people with much more knowledge than you are giving a lot of good advice in this thread and you are choosing to ignore it. you're lucky anybody is even still trying to help.



i don't understand why people feel the need to get something that's 'beginner' level. in filming, there is no such thing as beginner, intermediate, and advanced level imo (aside from something like a broadcast camera). rather, the levels are 'not that into it,' 'kinda into it,' 'really into it.'

what i mean by that is that if filming is something you ACTUALLY want to get into, why not buy a nice camera right off the bat? i don't really understand why you keep saying you're 'not ready for it.' just because you haven't learned how to use one (it's really not that hard if you practice, watch tutorials, and spend time in m&a) doesn't mean you aren't ready. i can even tell you from firsthand experience that if you have the basic principles of a DSLR down, you can even operate a RED (maybe not that well, but you know what i mean). i personally think if you are really looking to get into it, buy a nice camera that will allow you to progress. if you aren't really into it and don't plan on getting better, buy a so-called 'beginner' camera that will limit you from the beginning.

so instead of spending several hundred now on a 'beginner' camera then spending even more on an 'advanced' camera when you think you are ready, do yourself a favor and save some cash in the future by investing in a good camera now that will allow you to get better.

back in 11th grade my VX2100 broke, and i upgraded to a Panasonic HVX200A. Did I know how to use it when I bought it? Not at all, but as I used it over the next few years I continued to learn more and more about it and I became a far better filmer. By springing for a nice camera, I was able to get MUCH better as I wasn't as limited as I would have been by a camera more suited for my ability at the time.

now i'm not telling you to get a camera that is way outside of your price range, but every camera i've bought has been out of the range of what i was hoping to spend and i've had to work a little extra/sell more things to make the money; i'm always glad i did it.

sorry for writing so much, but i get annoyed every time i hear these kinds of discussions and this thread was a perfect example of that.

You raise a very good point. If you plan on seriously getting into filming, it's better to buy a camera that you can "grow into."

My jump from a GL2 to DVX100b in 9th grade was a bit confusing for the first few months, but I'm glad I got a camera with a steeper learning curve because my abilities as a filmer progressed.

Yeah I made this exact mistake when I bought my camera. I got it, used it for a couple weeks and although I'm not the best with it yet, I feel like I've learned everything about the camera already.

Do yourself a favor listen to people in this thread. If you have money for a nice camera and plan on getting serious about filming, buy a more expensive camera now and don't waste your money on a shit piece of equipment.

ive written down all the notes people have left in this thread as advice so you cant tell me im not listening when im actually serious about getting a camera, idk anything about filming squat i just asked these questions because my friends said i want a camera with 60fps, i really dont know anything idk how to put it in a way you will understand i just started questions off of my friends advice

if i need to buy a good camera off the bat i guess i will and ill learn to function it as i go on, im gonna head to my camera shop later today and ask the experts there to help me pick one out based on my needs and use of filming, but thanks man

Well in that case, let me help you based on the OP: 720p60 is pretty standard for a good camera. Night mode is a joke. And 5mp is the same a's a cell phone or a go pro. A t2i or 7d is 18mp I believe.
