One of those kits would work, but you can just go to the hardware store and get the stuff you need a lot easier.
I fixed mine by just removing the xbraces and redoing the thermal compound, then heated the GPU by blocking its airflow from the fan with paper. It worked for a while, but it RRODed again eventually. I tried heating the GPU directly with a heat gun after that, but it wouldn't fix the whiskering. If the attempts don't work you need to get some no-clean flux and reflux the solder that holds the GPU on. Then hit it with a heat gun. The repeated heating and attempted fixes kill the solder where it won't conduct enough without refluxing it. After refluxing it had been running great now.
Moral of the story is, I agree. fix it yourself. It's pretty simple. Just browse around online for tips.
