Pro Water Ski Tournament Vid

Hey guys,

Since we're only now nearing the end of summer, I thought I'd share this with any water skiers out there. This is just the trailer for a 15 min edit I put together that will be released next Monday, but check it out and let me know what you think. If mods want to move this thread to M&A, that's cool for sure, but I thought I'd put it out in NSG since not much is going on this time of year and some of you might be interested. Just so you know, I'm NOT A PRO VIDEOGRAPHER/EDITOR by any means, but I enjoy it as a hobby, and I was lucky enough to be asked by some friends in the industry to take on this project. I welcome any constructive criticism, although to be honest, at my level of ability, you might get tired of typing out your long list of complaints!

Forgot to mention... In the full length vid, I interviewed several professional water skiers such as Will Asher, Jon Travers, Scot Ellis, and Bob LaPoint who was pretty much a legend in the 70's and 80's. Along with Bob, Glen Plake actually showed up since they do a lot of skiing together on both the snow and the water, so he's in there a bit also. Anyway, since competitive water skiing's a pretty niche sport, the video should give you an idea of what it's all about.

when you're filming slalom, i'd recommend going a lot wider and showing more than just the cut around the buoy. That boat is going 36 miles an hour but your vid doesn't really give that impression of how fast it's going. Tighter buoy shots like yours are sick just don't make them the bread and butter. One of my friends skied for ASU the last 4 years and i routinely watch him run 6 at 22 off and he doesn't cut like that. He's a lot more fluid, in my eyes, he looks a lot better.

I.B - Thanks man. Not sure if I'd be too stoked on those jumpers in pow for the long run, but it might be fun to try. Goode (as in the ski pole mfr, and water ski company as well) makes something damn near close - check out the STR8: http://goode.com/skisfreeride.htm#monstro A bit ridiculous I think...

Will - I've jumped just short of 100' and it's pretty incredible how little shock there is on impact. A lot of it has to do with the surface area of the skis; mine were 86" in length and probably about 8" in width. The water also gives a bit, and you usually come down on the tails of the skis and rock forward. As for the pros... those guys are going 220'+ which translates to more height off the ramp, so those guys take more on the impact.

t-rob - Thanks for the tip, I do tend to crop those shots in normally. I guess I feel like slalom gets boring after a while if there isn't a lot of variation on the camera's end. Definitely check out the full edit though, as I have some wider stuff more often than not. Also, who's your buddy? I graduated from Cal Poly spring of 2010, so there's a good chance I know him. As far as 22' goes though, it'll definitely look more smooth than these guys ripping into 41' and the women at 35' or so. See the guys open at 32' off though is pretty damn incredible with the way they make it look so mellow.
