Should I sell my car?

So, my car needs about $1200 worth of work cause the rear differential is messed up and now it needs new tires too cause of it. Outside of the repair needed, I owe about 2000 less than what it's worth... and that's with it in fair condition. Getting it fixed would put it into good condition.

Anyway, I'm moving back up to Mammoth where the only driving I do is back to LA once, sometimes twice a month. Therefor, I spend around $500 a month between car payment, gas, and insurance.

For that amount of money, I could fly round trip between Mammoth and LA twice and still have $150 to $200 a month left over. Or I could rideshare down to LA twice a month for $80 total and have $420 a month left over.


Should I do this? Saving $420 a month could mean me traveling a lot more and more easily affording things like SIA and maybe getting a season pass to Squaw and new skis and so forth...

But then I dont have a car....

Do I do this? I'm really trying to justify it as a good idea.


It's an 06 subaru impreza outback. It's worth nearly 10k fixed, or 9k not fixed.

what about travel to and from the airport? thats an expense

also a car is very useful and you really realize this when you dont have one.
but if you think you wont need one (i dont know how you life ur life every day) then sell

If your like me you drive way more than you think. When this dumb girl wrecked my car I want too worried cause I didn't think I drove that much. But holy crap it is such a pain to bum rides to go everywhere. So I would say keep the car

Mammoth's public transit is entirely free and readily available pretty much all the time... except the hours when I'm intoxicated, but I dont drive then anyway.

Expense to and from the airport... Mammoth is free and LA is $7 for the Flyaway bus to union station where I can walk to my LA home. I've put 1000 miles on my car since June 15th. 630 of those were between mammoth and LA.

Do the other 370 miles justify needing a car?


Can you tell that I'm really trying to convince my self it's a good idea?

if you want to save money sell it and buy a cheaper car that actually functions. then you have a working car and extra cash, instead of actually spending a thousand bucks..

It's definitely not a good idea to get rid of the car completely though, not worth the risk of getting in a tough situation where you might need it.

sell the car and buy an older car for 1200 bucks for getting around mammoth.

no car payment.
minimal gas.
80/month for insurance.
and the left over for making it back to LA the few times.

Honestly, Mammoth has an awesome public transit system that will get you wherever you need to go in town and I'm sure you know people there who would be up for giving you a lift to the hill. A car would probably be a pain in the ass at Mammoth since parking is a bitch during peak season and then you have nothing to shovel the snow off of and dig out. LA is a car city for sure, but there is mass transit that will make the cut. LA has one of the nicest subway systems in the country. Save yourself the trouble of having to drive to and from Mammoth and just fly. Ditch the car, you don't need it.

k two things to say

1) mammoth is the shit! my padre works there so i go there a lot and do shit like midnight ski runs (its whatever)


2) i live in reno. they used to have flights into mammoth airport but discontinued the flights due to a lack of interest and a lot more people just wanted to drive. LIKE MEH. even though i dont think it'll happen. what if they discontinue flights to LA? then your out a car and a way to get to LA. im just sayin

The real question is can you move your stuff from Colorado without a car. We have plenty of friends who live in Mammoth without a car and do fine. On top of that without a car you never get asked to drive to float etc.

My stuff is already in LA... Woot! I'd move my stuff up to Mammoth before I sold it. I think Im coming up tomorrow actually... Staying with Matt Jaro (don't know if you know him) and looking for a place to live.

Side note (I've already lived 3 seasons in Mammoth... I know about the public transit). This is all in an effort of justification.

Definitely sell it! You don't need a car in mammoth and its pretty easy to bum a ride if need be. Thats alot of extra cash that can come in handy for food and what not. You are lucky to be moving there. Best place in the world!

Having a car is great... but sell it. Then you will be able to buy yourself a shitty old clunker that will get you around locally in case you don't want to walk. You will still be saving a lot of money, not as much but still. With that money you could buy new skis or the season pass. Really that option is a win win, but if you don't want to do that then just f**** it and sell the car there really not a necessity just a luxury.
