New fighter jet to bolster Russian air force

The T-50 performs during the MAKS 2011 air show outside Moscow. It is meant to rival the U.S. F-22 Raptor.

Russia's new stealth fighter jet made its public debut Tuesday, according to state-run news source RIA Novosti.

The Sukhoi T-50, developed collaboratively by Russia and India, appeared at the MAKS 2011 air show in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.

Gen. Alexander Zelin, head of the Russian air force, told RIA Novosti he expects the T-50 prototype to be ready in 2013, with "mass-produced aircraft" arriving in 2014 or 2015.

The aircraft is expected to become a staple of airborne defense for both Russia and India, Mikhail Pogosyan, head of Russia's United Aircraft Corp., told RIA Novosti.

"The T-50 will be the newest main plane both for the Russian and the Indian air force," Pogosyan said.

The article from the state-run media source says the Sukhoi T-50 cost the two governments about $6 billion to develop, with India shouldering about 35% of the cost. It is intended to match the U.S. F-22 raptor.

As a huge airplane fanatic, I cna tell you that the PAK FA T-50 will completely blow the F-22 out of the water in every aspect. Everything is better. The airplanes that America has been chruning out lately have been jokes. The F-35 is a poorly designed piece of shit, what should have been a dip-off of the Av8B harrier turned into a over-powered hunk of metal with power in all the wrong places, a show plane at heart

well to be fair, the F-22 contract was awarded in 1991, it first flew in 1997, and finally went into service in 05.

The t-50 just started flying a little over a year and a half ago.

The USA created the technology, the russians advanced it. And before you know it, the USA will advance it beyond where Russia is at right now.

And this children, is why weapons/technology advance at an amazing pace during times of war/when we have a very prominent enemy, like in the cold war. Because if Russia was our direct competitor, we would already have deemed the f-22 to be irrelevant and out of date, and a new, better aircraft would be designed immediately. If you look at the fighters of the '50s, 60s and 70s...the Air Force and Navy were constantly phasing planes in and out of service as they fell behind/advanced. Some fighter jets had production/service runs of under a year before they were replaced.

I think you should read up a bit more on why the arrow got scrapped. It was actually decades ahead of its time in several areas. notably 'life support'. It's the kind of aircraft that would be in service for decades, probably right up till the 90's at least.  Aircraft don't just go out of date that fast. for instance the chinook helicopter. It's still in service after half a century. let me say that again. 1/2 of 1 CENTURY. damn impressive. or civilian aircraft like the Beaver, almost 65 year. or even a 747, 40ish years. then you say "well they're not fighter jets". well the f-18's been in service for getting on 35 years now. and will be for another while longer. or the harrier, over 40 years. aircraft lifespans are much greater than 5-10 years. especially for a plane like the arrow which was considerably advanced for its time.

but seriously. go read up on the arrow. it was NOT even remotely close to out of date. it was further ahead than any other jet of the time and further ahead than most until decades later. not the reason for its cancellation.

I have devoted projects on the Arrow, I know my stuff probably a lot more than you do. The Arrow didn't deserve to be cancelled and destroyed and am the first to agree it was way ahead of its time and could have survived at least until the 80's if not 90's. The curios thing about the whole cancellation of the program is that no one is quite sure who gave the order to destroy the five ARROWS.

At the time of the mid to late 50's air doctrine and nuclear capabilities had changed. Air doctrine back then was jet fighter air craft with side winder rockets only with no forward mounted gun for dog fights. On top of this the Soviets were developing the their ICBM's. The ARROW was meant to intercept Soviet Tupolev TU-95's, not ICBM's.

On top of that the Americans had pressured us in to buying nearly 100 Bomarc ICBM's. Which we would eventually choose over the ARROW.

There was also rumours that Boeing had started to fear AVRO Canada with the vast technological leaps we were making like with the hover car. They wanted AVRO out of the picture.

However, did you know it is rumoured that one ARROW still remains somewhere hidden? Apparently upon learning of the cancellation the head of the ARROW project, a WWI fighter ace, was so distraught and disappointed he ordered one to be shipped out at night on a flatbed and taken to a secret location to be preserved. In 1968 when he was asked about if it was true or not he simply responded with "I dont want to talk about that". People also reported hearing in the early hours of that morning the roar of a lone ARROW's jets that would take off and never returned...
