Updating your RAM

So i want to upgrade from 4gb of RAM to 8gb. I have an idea of how to do it and i found the cards online for like 60 bucks. My question is has anyone ever done this? does it make a difference? is it somewhat easy? btw i have a macbook pro 15 inch.

i did it. cost me $50, and is a lot faster, super easy, nothing that you can really mess up

if you can't upgrade your ram you shouldn't be able to use a computer, its that easy

just google your computer model ram access or changing ram in (insert macbook here) and watch/read a tutorial. should be super simple

Before you upgrade your RAM you need to ensure you are using a 64bit version of OSX. A 32bit system can only handle up to 4Gig of ram so upgrading will do nothing unless you get a 64bit operating system.

And make sure you get SSODIM RAM. You probably know this, but it would kinda suck if you don't end up with them.
I'd recommend getting 1333Mhz instead of 1067Mhz too. A set of sticks can be had for 50$ I guess.

^ crucial is very legit. runs a scan to tell you what ram you need, came quick and i have not had any problems with it.

Actually, do not get anything faster than the RAM that came with your computer.

The faster RAM will do absolutely nothing if your computer can only handle so much. Get the speed that matches your current RAM. Otherwise, you will just be wasting money.

I thought about doing this as well, but I was told by several people that it will do nothing other than make the number in your bank account slightly smaller (or the number on your credit card slightly higher).

this is not true, faster clocked RAM is faster clocked RAM, however depending on your motherboard your computer may not be able to use faster clocked RAM and will usually automatically underclock it.

i don't know much about stock mac motherboards/configurations but im sure if you looked it up you could see the max supported speed. also being unfamiliar with macs, i dont know specifically how to do this, but im sure you could buy slower RAM and overclock it if need be.



also, may i ask, what in the world do you need 8 gigs of RAM for? i can't think of much that you would need that, unless youre encoding lots of videos and playing video games and doing god knows what else at the same time

Bingo, thats half the reason I am. I have to encode my 1080p60 footage twice to get it to work with cinema tools, takes alot of time. Also got it for overall faster performance and hopefully in the next year a 64bit fcp comes out and then rendering will go faster :)

ah gotchya, its always good to stay ahead of the game if you got the cheddar.

in that case definitely look up the max supported memory clocks for your motherboard and and get that. having highly clocked memory is going to benefit you more in the long run than just having gigs on gigs on gigs of shitty-clocked memory. also make sure youre getting dual channel memory and putting it in the right spots (though theres probably only two channels on a macbook anyway), i know you probably will, but just in case you try something finicky... ;)
